1975, my first car was a '64 bug. Paid a hard earned 500 bucks for it. Got me off of my 10 speed! My Dad got me the idiot book and I did all my maint. Great car. Took it on a 900 mile road trip with a buddy in '76. Never had a worry. 40 years later, I have another '64 sunroof bug. Bone stock. 300 miles on a tank of gas. I only use valvoline VR -1, 30 wt. These engines need zinc. Secure an owners manual for your car, as it has many procedures and tons of info. My reliability comes from all stock German parts. No China or Brazil stuff. 28 PICT-1, big cap dizzy, Pierburg pump. All restored to brand new from the the Samba guys. I had my stock radio converted to AM,FM and aux input. Samba. This car will be with me till the end. Cheers from West Texas!

Awesome story! Yup good parts last, do valves every oil change and make sure you have some zinc and they’ll almost never leave you stranded. Jealous you could drive all 4 seasons there, salt kills cars up here in northern illinois.

YES! I like what you said about building a VW "almost entirely out of a catalog." I recall an article series in "VW Trends" magazine many years ago. The series was called, "Project Mail-Order Resto-Custom." In it, they revamped a Polar Silver '57 'Oval using almost ENTIRELY catalog-available components. If you look around today, that fact still holds true. AWESOME POST!

Make it your "good weather" driver. Rust is a pain. Im from the midwest too and salt just destroys these cars, if you can avoid winter driving, I would.. but i also get cars were meant to he driven, and rust is fixable if you stay on top of it. Either way, I love seeing other beetles on the road! I say get her mechanically good and work on other aspects of the car as they come up/when you have the time (or funds) to do so!

@NoTraction
@NoTraction 3 жыл бұрын
My advice, buy a decent driver. Work on stuff when it breaks. If you buy something relatively stock, you can find an article/video on how to replace/fix said issue 99% of the time. When I got my fist car (the nova in the bg) I couldn’t change a tire, now I can do pretty much anything besides complex electrical work. That’s about 10 years of working on my junk whenever it needed something or I wanted to upgrade something. As the saying goes, it takes about 10k hours to master a skill. The good thing with cars is you don’t need to be a master. It’ll be intimidating at first, but you’ll build up the confidence and know how to a point where you start trusting your abilities and will take your car pretty much anywhere. There’s almost always a way to limp a car home or to a shop. Good luck! Hope you end up with one, they’re great fun little cars.

IIRC, the recommended interval for valve adjustments was 6,000 miles. It's important to keep them in adjustment, as you can burn a valve or valve seat if they get too far out of adjustment. Fortunately valve adjustment is pretty easy to do. Buy new valve cover gaskets. Don't try to re-use the old ones (I learned this the hard way. Oil all over the place.

Many people who own VW beetles, don’t actually know the charm of owning a real VW beetle. More than most, have never had, heard or driven a proper VW , original engined car. And lemme tell you why. Back in the day…80s and 90s….they were almost giving Beetles away. And The salvage yards were full of them. So, finding ORIGINAL good German parts was a thing. Jump ahead 40 years. Now, every part you buy is Chinesium, or if your really lucky Brazilian. We didn’t put Subaru engines in our beetles. Some people were hopping them up, but in my area. That was expensive. So, two things. The expense of making more HP, and stopping it….combined with gas economy. We all opted for stock. Because you could fix your stock bug with junk yard parts for a few dollars. And they retained the drivability, economy, and the charm. Now….it’s cheaper, to build a 3 liter Brazilian bubble case, stroker. Than to build an original German engine. So now you have 200 horsepower, and a rhino case transaxle, and four wheel disc brakes, and a turbo. Out the door went the charm of 53 hp. And going across country with that. Drum brakes, 25 mpg. And all that made the car great. So, I watch a bunch of channels. No one shows how to build a 40 hp original engine. No one shows how to retain the original fuel injection of a 69 fastback. Hell, no one even understands the car came with a thermostat. You mights as well buy a Corolla. Because if the car……looks like a beetle. But it has a 4 wheel drive bronco chassis and a V8…. Does not make it a beetle.

2:01…..nope. Neither of my cars weep oil. Because I built them correctly. Lemme ask you a question. Have you ever went to a new car stealership and saw each car with a disposable cat box under the engine? And if you had….would you buy the car? So, what makes you think a properly built VW engine leaks oil?

Man I wish mine was a ragtop! It took me about 4 years to find this patina style within a 4 hours radius of where I'm at. Whenever a ragtop came up it was either to nice, or had patina but the price tag of a restored one lol. Mines a '61! Do you have an intagram where you post pics of your cars? Always looking to add more vws to my feed.

@@NoTraction Thanks for the reply. You can message me on Twitter, @empirebuilder11. Sorry, no Instagram, but I'll be happy to share pics via other means. I'm curious whereabouts are you in the midwest. I'm originally from the MSP/St. Paul, MN area. My first car was a '67 Beetle which was so rusty that the fenders were held on by cabinet door hinges and sheet metal screws. The Winter salt-covered roads ate these and many other cars alive.

@@dbroenen Darn, Twitter is the only one I don't have. I live like right on the boarder of IL/IA. Winters are rough here, hence why it took so long to find something decent. My orange one could use new floors someday from it's use a daily in the 70/80s. But yeah the salt here is rough. I keep all my "toys" stored once they start throwing salt down. My newer civic, which is only 3 years old is already starting to show signs of surface rust from the winters underneath from being here. And being a car person, I wash it more than the avg person would.

@@NoTraction If you have an Facebook page for your channel, I can post 'em there. Alternately, if you have an email address for your channel, I can sent pics there. As for the salt, I know what you mean. I was impressed you scored a clean '61. Even in good climates, the pan (especially battery area) eventually needs attention. Wolfsburg West has good ones. Keep up the good work. Great channel!

Assuming you are looking at driver quality? 6k is probably going to get you a ‘68 or later. Although sometimes decent deals come up for pre 68s, but in today’s market it will either be a “steal” or probably need a bit of work. Note in the US that 75s on up are fuel injected, at least from the factory. Theres also super beetles vs beetles. Those are probably the biggest changes for 68 and newer. Obviously some minor things along the way, but it’s all preference and what’s available in your area and budget

good info. i have a 74 super beetle (right-hand drive) and it's been sitting in my parent's driveway for the past couple years and i need to bring out to tacoma. i need to rebuild the engine, replace the driver-side lower control arm and the floor pan. i can't find much info for repair manuals or parts on right-hand drive for the obvious differences.. i'm not a gear head but perhaps slowly i could learn to repair my bug using the power of duckduckgo! i have a walkaround video of my beetle on my channel if anyone has a spare minute while they're on the toilet, if they are so inclined

Got a question about the cost. What about a 60-63 ragtop sunroof bug? Those can get into some serious money. The most expensive ragtop sunroof bug I saw was about 50 thousand, but it was beautiful. It looked like a Herbie because it was pearl white and had a gray ragtop sunroof. I know ragtop sunroof bugs are rare, but is it possible to find one under 25 thousand because I am in the market for one. Would look nice parked next to my 65 Skylark.

I haven’t seen one come up for a few years near me, but there was a very clean one a few hours away that was 26k and had a well built turbo set up in it. This was maybe 3/4 years ago? Obviously the market has changed quite a bit in the past couple of years, but I would say it’s still possible to find a clean one for around 25k. Depends on the area and what exactly you want. I.e. finding something matching numbers or never restored and clean is prob not gonna be under 25k. Ragtops are definitely harder to come by, but I would keep checking the samba, vw pages, Facebook marketplace regularly, and I would even say it’s worth getting on Craigslist still because some older people post there vs Facebook. Good luck, they’re out there!

3:47 nope….it’s real complicated, and it’s tre-cool. Not like a brigs engine….sorry. Did you know that each German case was gear matched, cam and crank. So as to make no noise and wear a long time? The cam gear was hobbed. -5 to 5…..ten different cams. And someone too their time to make sure that was right? One of dozens of completely unique features. Name me another engine that didn’t need head gaskets. Because I took the time to source matching German parts, when building my engines. They don’t sound like they have a 6-71 supercharger on them.wirr, wirr…. Sure, you can be 15 and fit together a hodge podge of parts, and maybe it runs. But for how long? Yes, I did this then.
