Couldn't agree more. I have 500-600 CDs. I don't trust any online streaming services. Like you say, them can remove songs at any time. Buying MP3 leave you at the mercy of the medium you copy them too and even then you are limited to the number of times you can copy, leaving you unable to play on all you machines. Storing things on the cloud is like letting an unknown neighbor keep you whole music collection for you. One day you wake up and they have disappeared. I buy the CD, burn it to a HD with a backup in case of failure. Even if both drives fail, I still have the CD as an original source. I think a lot of young people will be really pissed one day when they realize they don't have their favorite songs to stream anymore and it will happen. Young people think the world is permanent since they haven't lived in it long enough to see that things always go away eventually. Protect your music. If you have the CD, you have it forever. FOR SURE !!

I used to have a bunch of cds. I ended up ripping them all to my PC in lossless format. Then started just downloading albums digitally. But the last couple years, I’ve gone back to buying the CD and ripping in lossless again. They are essentially the same price as the digital version, but better quality.

if they're FLACs they are the exact same as CDs if not better. 24 bit audio, sample rates above 44.1k (though anything above 48k is useless for sound reproduction), and also built-in metadata.

CDs are still a better sound quality than these streaming services which will most likely never get to the CD quality. I love collecting & listening to them. There's so much in CDs that there isn't in streaming such as ownership, tangibility, convenience, beautiful artwork, signed copies, no ads or internet, no removal/editing of songs etc. The prices are still cheap, same with good portable cd players on amazon.

Love it. I grew up listening to The Offspring (I'm in my late 30s now) and Smash (the album Self Esteem is on) was one of my favorites and I still enjoy it. It holds up really well and is one of the great albums of the 90s. Enjoy growing your music collection!

I bought a new Panasonic Stereo for Lana del Rey and Greta Van Fleet 😂 ... i conected my Phone via 3,5.mm and played the same song from Spotify and the CD and the CD has much more depthness ! That really suprised me ! Especially over headphones! I conected my Sennheiser and the sound was so much richer and deeper with the CD its nuts !

Back in the late 80's I changed from vinyl to CD. This was because I was fed up with having pops, crackles and scratches on vinyl no matter how well I looked after it and I haven't gone back. I have had, probably, 1000's of CDs over the decades but only have a smallish collection of (at the moment) around 360 CDs. This was because I decided I have to like around 50% of the album to have the physical copy. Otherwise I probably wouldn't play it. I have ripped a large majority of the CDs I have owned and have created an MP3 jukebox of all the music I OWN. So I can create playlists or compilations on my PC etc. But if I want to listen to one of my favourite albums I can put the CD on. Best of both worlds.

Great points all around! I just purchased a Sony 5 disc changer from my local goodwill for $9.99 (no remote). Have a dvd player, but I just like putting in 5 CDs in a CD player and hitting shuffle.

As a musician I’ve been surprised how well CD’s sell at our merch table. And just like you said we sign every one that’s purchased. It’s a great memento for fans and a good price. As a collector I’ve seen more and more people at my local stores browsing CD’s. I’d start collecting now before prices start going up.

i find used cds on average for 4.99-7.99 for good albums. i have a huge vinyl collection but for the price of one record lets say the new 45 dollar Nirvana In utero album i can get the intire dicography on cd, or damn near the whole thing. ill add storage is cheap now, i import my cds into itunes Lossless and sounds amazing on mp3 players. lastly the phone is a shit way to "listen" to music, push notifications going off all the time, and spam calls and texts pull you right out of the vibe. good video

Hey from Australia. As an ex club DJ of 30 years (I'm 63 years of age now), CDs are great but being an 80s DJ, most of my music is on 12 inch vinyl singles. Most DJs today use the CDJ players mostly because of lugging around heavy crates of vinyl. Both Analog and Digital formats have their problems but if you wanna blame someone, blame the engineers because that's where the problems start. My first digital vinyl album was Georgio Moroders E=MC Squared and it was so bass light it was a joke. Fast forward to 2024 and depending on a few things, vinyl can be a better medium than CDs. i love Enya and Clannad and listening to an A B test, the CD won every time. Both Digital and Analog formats are fine when mastered properly. Another thing that CDs have over vinyl is that if you wanna chill with friends, a CD is great because you don't get interrupted half way through to flip it over for side B and if you use a high quality carousel, you don't have to worry about what to play for hours. The biggest problem is how you treat your records and CDs. Sometimes I just wanna quit the digital world and play vinyl because it reminds me of better times. As I've said earlier, CDs when mastered properly sound wonderful.

There was an uptick in 2005 around the price of certain limited edition cds when they went out of print. In my corner, soul music on cd was worth about double once copies dried up. This is pre-cd era music reissued in limited batches but available for a number of years. Some get repressed while others didn't. Labels that are collectible include Sundazed, Rhino-handmade, Hipo-select, Wounded Bird, Spy, Edsel, Raven, Right Stuff, Sequel, Ambassador, Ace, Bear Family, etc. Japanese imports and almost any jazz album with 4-6 players sells well. Cds on the charts in the 90's-2005 like REM were common and will hardly ever command more than $3-5 if that. Cd singles and deluxe reissues with bonus content is where the gains will be as it has limited content. Vinyl albums from the mid to late 70's are very common in number and don't command as much as desired titles outside of that era.

Why? This goes for most media. I understand buying the best quality media available for high-quality rips especially, but it also takes up a lot of space and burdens you with more responsibilities of worry imo, having been there myself. Some storage devices and a means to playback nicely and you're golden and have a faster and easier means of use typically.

i personally love to have a tangible copy of an album i'm passionate about along with the extras that come with a physical copy like artwork, signed copies & lyrics. Plus it supports the artist. I understand the storage concern which is exactly why I don't want to store my computer & phone with songs because of the amount of space they take up. It's also not a physical problem if you have a small collection, i'm not even at 20 yet because i'm picky.

I love my physical media, still buying and collecting Vinyl and CD's, in fact the same topic you covered here is just as valid in respect of books, as I also love to collect and read books. Now some years ago the Kindle was issued, bit like a walkman for book worms, where you could download a book for a fee. Now for me this is great when on vacation, easier to take with me as opposed to a stack of books, but I only use it in that context once, maybe twice a year if that. My main source of reading has always been and always will be a book. And like CD's I have signed copies of my favourite books by the likes of Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, and the debut novel by Susanna Hoffs, which crosses the boundaries of both Literature and Music, and these hold great memories for me. Don't get me wrong I do stream some music and enjoy that format to a degree, but it's the Vinyl, the CD and the Hardback or the Paperback for me all the way.

The very first CD I bought was in 1987 when that CD was first released to replace my vinyl album of Floyd's Obscured By Clouds. To hear that album without any hiss or pops or crackles was fuckin' amazing. I still have it, I still buy CD's and I still have all the vinyl albums and CD's I have bought over the years.

I think it's funny how it's called "collecting". As a Millenial, I may have a "Collection of CDs" but I hardly used this therm, they were just "my CDs". Now it feels like I'm a "collector of old things". Prices for CDs are already increasing and therefore I buy used CDs in a bulk just because I may want to listen to them later but wouldn't be able to afford them later on, which led me to a little bit messy collection at the moment. It's "buy now and catalog afterwards" instead the other way around and buy only the CDs you want. But if everybody buying cheap CDs in bulk, I feel the need to do as well. This leaves me a little bit frustrated because I can't listen to every CD I bought.

my car has a usb port in the center cubby. I rip my cds to my pc then add tons to a flash drive put it on random an good to go! I keep my cds forever but on my shlf safe and just take the flash drives in the car. This way none get lost or damaged and if my pc crashes oh well I can just re rip them if I can't recover it.

It's possible to lose a FLAC collection with a failed storage device. The only way I'm losing my CD collection is in a house fire, and then I've got bigger problems. Plus CDs are the best way to listen to music in the car or at a friend's house, bar none.

@@RobertQuant It depends how you do it , sometimes i download music from Qobuz on my high end Astell & Kern portable DAP in cd quality (FLAC 44,1 KHz-16bit) or higher, and the sound quality is exactly the same. So cd quality is cd quality , it doesn't matter if it's on a cd or a download. Things changes only when you "downgrade" to MP3.

Cds are great but cd players are extint. Modern ones are either too expensive or cheap plastic portables but nothing in between like in the 90s. Some say use bluray players but they only have a hdmi output for the tv and no RCA.

This is the golden age of used CD collecting. In my opinion it will soon be over. I have noticed that the quality of used CDs has already started to deteriorate. I don't find as much good stuff anymore. What is good, is often in poor condition. People in the future will want to buy a CD in near mint condition. Those will be where the value is.

Vinyl was ruined by hipsters who see records more as a collector's item and a statement about their own personality, but even more than that, as an investment. Instead of something that's meant to be played and enjoyed. Hence the insane prices they now command, even adjusted for inflation often more than what tey were worth when they originally came out in the 70s to 90s. It sucks, and I am still hoping the same doesn't happen with CDs.

I never understood why people use Apple iTunes when there are far, FAR better services out there to listen to music. Like, for me I mainly listen to 60's -90's music and for that I just switch on the radio (or load in a radio station on my PC,) , or load a KZbin playlist in the background. I love listening to the radio when I play most video games, which is my main hobby and something I do for at least 12 hours a day as I am 100% housebound. I have not bought any physical media for over 10 years now of anything. Blu-ray, CD, tape, etc. There is no point. It just takes up valuable space which, in my case is at a huge premium as I live in a 10 foot by 10 foot studio flat. Radio stations and KZbin are perfect for me. And they are FREE! (well, apart from paying the internet provider, but you have to do that anyway.) So, that's my 2 pence worth. I guess we are all different.

Though, to be honest I am over 95% into emulation so I play mainly NES, Sega, and that sort of thing and those I download from sources where I can keep them for as long as I want to. It may not be quite legal, but, hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I do own about 4-5 Steam games but that is about it. And some people say that, "what happens if the server goes offline and you can never play that game anymore," then I just say, "Oh well, never mind," and play something else. I have never been annoyed if I lose anything like that. It's not important, just a toy really. It's not like losing your home or one of your family. There are so many 10's of 1000's of games out there that it doesn't bother me. As long as I get at least a year out of the game I feel like I have got my monies worth out of it. And, even if I havent, cest la vie.

It depends on what source you stream from. With Qobuz you stream in cd quality or higher (high-res) and i can assure you, the quality is exactly the same (i have about 3000 cd's myself). But of course, you need good equipment.

Nope. This is not a dumb opinion, just an incorrect one. The value of CDs will plummet and here’s why: Buying old CDs will produce mixed results in audio quality. Reason being, CDs made in the 80s and 90s used Pre-emphasis (a hidden eq for noise reduction we weren't supposed to know about) and all CD players use De-emphasis. CD burners did not have de-emphasis though and disc makers stopped using it around the early 2000s it's believed. Audiophiles are finally starting to realize that all those thousands of CD's they've backed up to hard drive over the years probably have to be redone or converted with software to de-emphasize them. This goes way deep. There's lots to read about. People are literally trying to figure a way for a class action lawsuit because all CDs are defective (it'll never happen + statute of limitations.)

The price of LPs is ridiculous these days. 30-50€ for an album. That's 'cause it's a fad, a trend, same with cassettes which cost as much as cds these days. Mindboggling. Do they remember how brilliant cassettes were back in the day? Evidently not. I'm not interested in that overpriced bullshit with million different LP colours. You need to have a great turntable to make LP sound close to cd-quality. Hopefully the LP and MC craze will die out soon. I hope for the appreciation of music, not the overpriced item, to come back.
