I grow up as much as possible. At my last home I turned my (grown) children's climb-on toys into garden trellises. I loved having butternut squash hanging from the monkey bars. The climbing dome had peas planted at the bottom and they grew up to cover the dome. Even my teenager enjoyed crawling inside the "living tent." Having 4 soccer players meant it was far safer for my pumpkins to grow vertically rather than spreading along the ground.

@Gardener Scott I'm in my 9th decade and all my life I tried to "grow vertically", but never made it past 5'1.5". ; ( There was a young man in our grocery store recently who must have easily been 7'13". (HA!) I told him I had a question and asked if he had time to answer it, which he said he did. So ~ I asked him (he probably thought I needed to know where I could find the peanut butter!), "Why is it YOU grew vertically and I grew horizontally?". He smiled and replied, "Genetics, my dear, genetics"! Perhaps you, Gardener Scott, or someone else HERE can offer some advice! ; ) I'm sure it's far too late for me, but I continue trying.

I grew my pumpkins up! I made hammocks for them! It helped me save space, love it!

I started my pumpkins up but was told later that the vines grow roots by the leaf joints (I don’t know what you call it). I have one that is on the cattle panel arch I made and am using a t-shirt holding it up. So I am wondering if I can get those vines to wind back up the cattle panel. You didn’t have any problems? I have a personal size watermelon too! It looks cool!

First year really veggie gardening. Didn't take long for me to realize verticle gardening is the way to go for most of my plants. For instance, my bush beans took up so much room and were a pain to harvest. I grew green, yellow and purple pole beans anong my fence and took out my bush beans. Next summer I'll be looking for cow panel for sure. Great video! Thank you for the work you put into sharing it with us

As someone with a history of back problems, its a main reason I do container gardening, I was looking forward to this year. I put in three 8 foot cattle panel trellises in early spring, I just love them. I have melons and cucumbers growing on them, four plants a piece. Next year I will add more plants under them because now I know there is room. I would like to put up more trellises, but there isnt a lot of room to do so. I want to put in 2 eight foot beds for non climbing plants over the winter.

I've been using various forms of netting to grow beans, butternut squash and cucumbers for a while - but when I saw how cattle panels are taking over U.S. gardens I loved them. Way better and much stronger. No cattle panels here in NZ but after searching high and low I find I can get reinforcing wire mesh (ungalvanised). Its generally wider, but thats ok. in particular I'm going to bend it over walkways between two garden beds so I can stroll amongst the tumbling noodle beans, pumpkins, melons and on and on. I may never go back inside the house ever again. Thanks for your great video, as always.

Great video! Yers ago I tried to grow cantaloupe vertically using old nylon stockings as slings for the fruit. I now have cucumbers growing in pots with a nylon grow netting behind the between two stakes. Its working well.

I have a relatively small yard so I have to make the most efficient use of space possible. Vertical gardening is absolutely the way to go! Another benefit is it allows better air flow around plants and you don’t have to worry as much about soil-borne diseases since it’s off the ground. It reduces pest and disease pressure in my experience. I just bought a Green Stalk with your promo code today, I’m going to use it to add growing space to my cement patio area! We grow where we can~ in the spring I salvaged the soil in all the containers as the proper garden space was overgrown with lawn and still frozen. I thought the soil would warm up faster, which it did, but unfortunately it also cooled down just as fast, which meant the containers were much less resilient and the stress on the plants had them going to seed way too soon. The garden still worked out, and the plants put into the ground at the start of summer did amazing, but a lot of the ones that stayed in containers didn't make it, except for where they grew together to protect the soil and were shaded in the afternoon.

Hi, I do both, but prefer not to do vertical because, especially my tomato plants, on the ground, the plants are not as exposed to wind and at night get heat from the earth. Yes, as a vine, they do root and develop more fruits! I have the space and less weeds, as well!

I am 1000% sold on trellises for my tomatoes next year. Those wire cones are a pain and so is pruning (bc i am fighting the cone trying to get into the center of the plant!)

I borrowed your t-post tomato trellis idea and now they have some immense support where my cages kept falling over. Does it increase risk of sunscald?

If you prune away leaves around the fruit you may have sunscald, but the trellis shouldn't cause it.

How do the melon plants get any sunlight? I had carrots in an "understory" last year and it wasn't until I harvested above crop that they really started to mature.

By growing them vertically they can get more sun than lying flat. The leaves should be above nearby plants.

Dosen't pollination go way up having the blooms off the gound available to pollinators and the wind?

It depends on how they are pollinated, but making the flowers more accessible can definitely help.

Great show. I’ve fiddled with vertical gardening for quite a number of years, but this year became serious with the use of hog and cattle panels. Having great success but…, Cantaloupes and butternut squash growing vertically need support. I’ve been playing with old nylon stockings etc., but would love to see a show about hammocking large fruits! I’m sure you could do the subject justice.

you just gave me an idea as I wondered about growing heavier plants. How about saving the netted bags that potatoes, avocades, onions come in and use them as a hammock, tying to the cattle panel once the fruit appears to be supported by the bag? Make sense?

Sure, but they need a strong trellis and a support like a sling to hold them up.

I don't understand how the trellis helps your zuchinni , is there a video that elaborates on what is going on in there?

I'm planning one soon. The main squash stem can elongate and flop over and the leaves can shade a large area. Keeping it vertical and pruned allows more plants in less space.

Garry not Linda. OK, I'm confused. At 4:04 you show basically a hoop trellis with cucumber, squash and watermelon and say that you're growing vertically. These are not young plants, the squash has set fruit but everything seems to be ingrown and intertwined. I fail to see how this arrangement is growing upward or especially in the case of the cucumbers how you're going to find all of the fruit. I don't see any vines trained to the outside of the hoop it all seems to be just wrapped around inside on themselves. Am I missing something?

These are young plants. The squash just began fruiting and the cucumbers just began flowering. Many squash plants, including zucchini, will continue to set new fruit along the center stalk. They tend to droop or fall to the side as the plants grow. Squash can be trained vertically to avoid that. The cucumber vines will be trained from the inside to the outside of the trellis; they're just not that tall yet.
