In this video essay, I'm sharing why I won't retire. I explain why never retiring can be a positive thing, and why I find slowing down, stepping aside and never-ending leisure problematic. I also touch on questions like "why do we retire?" and whether an "early retirement" is a good thing.

My question is who retires and do nothing? Unless younless you classify traveling, volunteering, working out, going to social groups, ballroom dancing, learning a new language, etc as "nothing", everybody does something

Actually, the statistics are quite depressing. The number one pastime of retirees over 70 is watching TV. Nothing else comes close!

YOU may think you'll never retire, but your company may have other ideas. I was downsized out of my job at 67, along with a dozen other people all over 55. After my "involuntarily retired" I had a nervous breakdown and went to outpatient mental health treatment for quit awhile. I finally sold my condo and entered a seniors facility and have never been happier. I have a great community of friends and we visit together, eat together and just have fun. I also read and do blanket-making for foster kids. When I was working I couldn't trust a soul, and the backbiting and nastiness were ever-present. My job involved far too much boring and purposeless activity and I often came home too exhausted to have any kind of a life. I'm 75 today and eagerly looking forward to the rest of my life.

So glad you found happiness of a lifestyle that works for you! While I don’t have plans to retire for a very long time (I’m 60 now, healthy, active and Self-Employed), I agree that people are better off without high stress jobs. You’ve got to enjoy whatever you are doing!

My plan has no retirement within it. I retired from the military pension #1 I work the federal justice system at 50 I can retire again #2 I plan to teach criminal justice at small school/university. Within that career you have holidays off, 2 weeks off during winter break, 2 weeks off during spring break, and 9 weeks off during the summer. I plan of taking trips and never

Great video. Here’s my story: - 20 years applied mathematician - 10 years management - 20 years software enginneer At age 74, temporarily unemployed due to project cancelation. Considering my options. Hope to find something new over the summer (As I write this, it’s early June.) Bottom line: Like and agree with your vid.

Dude... you are a student and you talk about retirement. You obviously haven't been in a workforce.... Kid, being retire doesn't mean you won't do anything - you will still do things that you love. Once retired, you have the FREEDOM to choose what you do and when to do.

Gonna have to agree with this one. Not everyone gets to have their "ikigai" as their main job; there isn't a market for it. Maybe we'll get to a future where not everyone needs to work, but even then there aren't that many people for whom their ikigai would be cleaning bathrooms. For those people, it means a lot to be able to envision a future where they have worked long enough, at something they don't love, and get a break from it. I think the biggest problem was setting retirement at r=65, rather than r=LifeExpectancy - 2 years. Would have kept it honest at least.

I agree, but it is only if you have nothing to retire to. I retired last year from "Corporate America" & during my working years I just wanted out. It's truly a rat race. The dirtiest rat gets the cheese. It took about a year for me to figure what I wanted because now I have my freedom. Guess what? I just want more freedom. But now I can control the type of freedom I'll have and I control how I will achieve it.

Omgosh this is true I tried to retire and I’m board as shit I need to go back to work. It also ages you sitting around board all day long. No purpose to get up it’s horrible I’m going stir crazy and I have hobbies and lots of friends that still work.

This is absolutely brilliant never retire boredom loneliness isolation depression if you have no where to go your toast you spend all day saying what did I just do companies lick there chops knowing your stupid enough to leave listen to every word of this depression is the worst thing to have it’s a pain you never want to have

BS really I’d never advise people to just keep on working, we’ve been enslaved since childhood… take your retirement early and finally do the things you always wanted to do… no one ever at end of life says I wish I would have worked more…
