Of all the games in the mainline series of FF, this is the only one I didn't like. While I know some people like the tight gameplay loop of this game, I found it too sparse to enjoy. I tried to play through this game 3 different times and quit before finally finishing it on my fourth attempt. Despite this, I still think this game has the most interesting setting and story concepts in the entire series. This game instilled a love for idiosyncratic world settings that I never quite got over. Great video on this controversial entry! I don't have too much experience with FFXIV, so I'm really excited to see your video on that one.

So... I am going to continue, but at a slower pace for the final 3 games. They need their time taken. FFXIII I never finished until doing it for this video. I saw my brother finish it, I played through at least 70% of it 3 times before finally putting the hours in this time. I think, what it's trying to do, is strong. But the leap from 'great characters interacting with an amazing world as they travel through it' to 'characters interacting with each other as they travel through a hostile world' was just too much of a leap for the franchise. And I 'think' it was the technology issues with the new engine that forced them down that path - but others are more read up on the games troubled development than me.... ... And speaking of troubled development the next game should be fun :)

I was intrigued about 13 through Resonant Arc's coverage of the game, despite not having played it. I will admit, a few storytelling ideas and the vaguely refreshing linearity do sound kinda good, but it's fair to say this is lower on my priority list when going through my FF backlog. Happy new year.

The high points are great. About half way through the game Sazh suffers an emotional breakdown and takes it out on one of the other characters that 'nearly' justifies 5 hours of pointless romping about thats been leading up to the brilliant scene. Even back in 2010 I thought it was peak FF just that one moment. But... playing 4 hours of build up for 1 moment is not efficient use of your time.i can get so much more out of so many other games. My advice is - if you do play it, and 3 hours in your enjoying it, you good to go. But if by hour 3 it hasn't clicked then don't play on with false hope - it doesn't change. Happy new year

This was almost the game that brought me back in after stepping away from the franchise with FFX, but other action games of this generation just appealed to me much more & I've never had a desire to jump back to it since. I hope you continue this series through to FF16 as I'd love to see your thoughts specifically on FF16.

Love your videos, especially the FFXI video got me because up until now its the only FF I didn´t play although I bought the complete edition on PC a few months ago and have the Xbox360 edition in my collection. Will definitely play it some day (still hoping for an offline remaster). One correction though, because I saw it in several of your videos: FFXIII (and also the SNES- and PSX-era of FFs) are NOT turn based. Menu based battle engines don´t equal "turn based". There are only four turn based FF games: I-III and X. ATB is a real time system which doesn´t count turns / is based on a specific turn order. The whole idea of this system was to step away rom the slower paced turn based system and put some pressure on the player, it was the first step into a more action oriented experience within the series.

Thirteen is a fun game. I liked the characters and the battle system. The story was okay but sometimes was a little like what the hell is going on but i did enjoy the game. Even played it twice. I want to play through it again though.

I've played 16 - but I decided not to do the full game run until I had completed my marathon. I'm getting tense with it now clearly visible on the horizon and still resolutely refusing to look or feel like a real RPG game. The weird thing is - the pointless open world of 15 made me long for those corridors to come back. Why can't SE ever find the balance?

So by that they are both spiritual successors to Final Onewaystreet X, but XVI with better story, fun gameplay and less linearity (and no cringe voice acting).

@@GenerationPixel It is less final fantasy than XI, XII and XIV. It is linear as fork, undemanding combat (aka hit the right enemy with the right character), lame story, bad 3D graphics, a huge gap in character design between ingame and cgi, cringe voice acting, no real towns, weak villains and so on. The only phenomenal aspect I will give this game credit for is its soundtrack in every other department it is worlds behind its four predecessors and its high regard nowadays is due to the fact that many millenials had their first FF experience with this game and hence the nostalgia googles they have for this game.

Honest man here Play FF13 if you enjoy battles in RPGs and nice graphics and music Otherwise FF13 has terrible characters and ZERO towns or NPCs...FF13-2 is waaaay better. There's a reason why there's no FF13 villian in the Dissidia series....

The only human like villain in 13's trilogy is Caius. And there's no reason why Caius is not in Dissidia.

@@groudonvert7286 Caius shows up in 13-2 he's not in 13 and they made 13-2 and Caius cause 13 was a disappointment And Caius is pretty cool and Serah and Noel are also pretty great especially Noel he's awesome

@@eddy5097 Well Dissidia has human-.like antagonist who shows up. Barthandelus never fight us in his human form, Orphan has none. Only Cid fights us in his human form. By the way, Snow has his LR outfit in Dissidia (and from what I saw, he's considered as a villain).

@@groudonvert7286 I remember we fought him but it was for a stupid reason and made no sense same with Noel...and yes Snow is there in NT but he wasn't there in Duodecim and Lightning was there...Caius should have been there instead of Snow for sure

It gets good after 12 hours....it even gets very good I'd say, but it also has the worst, most nonsensical ending ever! It has to be said (spoilers) because I never get bored of saying it, I'm not exaggerating, and people insist the story of this game is good: they are cured of their curse with the power of friendship. That's the ending. Every character is annoying as hell, I don't give a F that you had a nice time on your corridor journey with your friends Vanille! Show your thigh tattoo more. xD

When you don't bother fleshing any character outside of the 6 protagonists out at all - there really wasn't a lot they could do that wouldn't feel unearned. Honestly - in my marathon, the most shocking thing about this game was the complete lack of NPCs of any quality whastoever. Both in gameplay and cutscenes 95% of all dialogue is just them talking to each other about what they 'feel' or 'think' is happening to them. Even the enemies one vocal mouthpiece speaks in riddles and condescension. How are you meant to get a good handle on the games story when it's so opaquely hidden behind all that, when there's not a single 'thing' for you to latch onto save for the friendship the characters have built up. That said - as crooked as the ending of this game was - it was made infinitely worse by the bungled tampering of the sequels.

This was the worst FF game I ever played. The story and characters are terrible. The battle system is actually alright.
