It's so weird listening to this guy talking about jrpgs when he sounds like he's gonna shout yeehaw and fire a couple of six shooters in the air after every sentence

I love the channel man! I got Oath on Steam way back in the day (only to show support for jrpgs on Steam ironically). It ended up sparking a love affair with the series for me. Everyone should try it!

This was my second Ys game right after Seven. Funnily enough it was after this game came out I went to gamestop to get it but the clerk gave me Seven instead. When I got to this game the combat was so much slower and less bombastic so it felt disappointing for the first few hours. Now I have warmed up more to this game after my expectations have been brought down to reality. Back then I was way less aware of the series and how it worked. I am excited for you to play Celceta since it has the best regular boss theme in the series. Such a powerful tune.

Interesting video. I've been playing Ys VI recently and ran into this video. The first Ys Game I'd played was back in the '90s and it was Ys III for the SNES. I rented it and remember being really impressed with the music but not really liking the game that much. I then played Ys 1 & 2 remake for the PC and absolutely loved it. I then bought the PC Engine version, Ys IV and Ys V Expert on the SNES. In 2005 (or 2006), I bought Ys Origin, Ys Ark of Napishtim, Ys Oath of Felghana, and Ys I & II on Windows PC from Japan. I beat Oath of Felghana sometime before 2010 on the PC and I remember liking it. I don't remember it being difficult, though. Since I had played Ys III a few times, I was very familiar with it and remember drawing comparisons. Strangely, after beating all the Ys games up to the PC Engine version (forgot it's name) and Ys IV on the SNES (the lesser of the two, in my opinion), I gave up on beating Ys until I could play through Ys V. I didn't want to play through the later Ys games without having beat that one. It was only within the last couple weeks I finally sat down and played Ys V, which I liked. Yeah, Oath of Felghana is pretty good. I've recently purchased Ys I - V on the PS2 as well. I'm a bit of an Ys nut. Still trying to get through the PS2 version of Ys VI. I hear the PC version is the way to go but I have a Mac. Sorry for the rambling. Good video.

Thanks. I've got the PS2 version of VI as well. Looking forward to playing that one, I've heard it's tough
@roberthunter479 Жыл бұрын
@@rpg_haven Not too bad but you will need to grind. Doing the PS2 version currently. I'm seriously considering installing Bootcamp to run Windows on my Mac to play the PC version as I hear that's the best way to go.

Oh, a word of advice when you start Napishtim. Try to master the Jump Dash Slice. There are some chests that you simply can't reach without it. I wasn't able to do it until I practiced for a bit.

I think Ys 6 is the most difficult imo.(Well Brandish and Xanadu Next are probably the hardest nihon falcom games). Hopefully one day they remake Ys 5 and in September 2023 Ys X comes out in Japan so I need to import that. I still need to play Zwei and Trails of Nayuta. I don't remember the order I played the games in but oath is probably my 2nd favorite game of the series.

Just to make a little correction, Ys III doesn't use the bump system. It was kinda like Zelda II, with sidescrolling gameplay and something of a black sheep in the series. Combat was as fast as ever, but you had to swing your sword.

I disagree with one thing. Ys is NOT a JRPG. I think this might be another case of someone calling an RPG series a "JRPG". I've read what other people consider a JRPG and while I think JRPG is a useless title, I certainly disagree that any of these games should be titled thusly. None of these games are "JRPG's". Yes, they're from Japan but if you call Oath of Felghana a "JRPG", then Legend of Zelda is one as well. I think this is something gamers born in the '90s are trying to push on the rest of us and I wish the term would disappear. It either is an RPG or it is not an RPG. JRPG tells me nothing of the genre it purports to categorize.
@rpg_haven Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a term no one can seem to agree on. Maybe I'll make a video about that someday
@roberthunter479 Жыл бұрын
@@rpg_haven That's certainly true. I've tried to understand the logic behind some of the naming schemes. I can understand Metroidvania, another term I don't like, but it makes a bit more sense. I keep imagining the old PC games Ultima Exodus (or any from games 1 - 4) and Wizardry, then comparing them to games like Dragon Quest (Warrior). All 3 can be found on the NES and we didn't make the distinction because they were similar. I don't know, maybe I'm making a poor argument.
@ranzorr Жыл бұрын
@@roberthunter479 Maybe we souldn't call it a JRPG, but I think it's definitely an Action RPG. And I don't consider Zelda an RPG because Link doesn't level up or aquire progressively better swords and armor, which are key aspects in any RPG.
@roberthunter479 Жыл бұрын
@@ranzorr Yeah, I can agree with that. Using Legend of Zelda as an example to compare it to was a poor choice. The NES game Crystalis is closer and a better example . The use of JRPG does seem to be something that is used differently by different people. I think the way I use it might cause a problem as well. I define it as "an RPG from Japan". The problem with the way I define it is that there are games from other countries that are very similar. So similar that if the player didn't know the game was from Japan, they would assume it falls in the same genre as another similar game not from Japan. One thing is certain, the genre is not well defined and is used differently by people. It might even be considered a sub genre sitting beneath RPG's. That's how I would categorize it. Not as a genre but as something that describes where the game was created. I think of games from the series Dragon Quest, Wizardry, and Ultima and think that they share a lot of similarities. One is from Japan but they share a lot of similarities. Either way, I didn't mean for my initial comment to be negatively critical of the content's author. I enjoy his videos and really love his enthusiasm for a franchise that I love.
@ranzorr Жыл бұрын
@@roberthunter479 Yeah, JRPG is kinda of a useless term, and I don't remember when that started being a thing. You're right that back in the day there was only RPG as a genre, no J, W or CRPG.
