Why You should RE-GEAR your truck | Ford Raptor gets 4.88 Nitro Gears

I cant stress the importance of Regearing your truck! Even the Ford Raptor with all of its technological advancements can benefit from a Nitro Gear installation, especially after adding larger wheels and tires. Although modern transmissions and high horse power keep the Ford Raptor moving, you'd be suprised how much additional wear and tear it causes on your transmission when adding large tires! When I put 37” on my 17 f150 with 6r80 and stock gears 3.31. first gear was like 0-50mph rapped out lol. I had to drive the truck in manual mode because of the gear hunting! Finally got 4.88s put in holly crap ,also put a petal commander, and E85 tune from palm beach dyno truck feels like added 200hp! But no doubt larger tires = re gearing!!! I’ve always pur larger tires on my rigs and my f150 was first to ever get re-gearing. I will always get new gear with larger tire now!!

The truck looks way better with the new springs on the rear and once you are done towing, they should be settled just right, don't take any leaves out like you were going to. The gears will also make up a lot of the power loss too! Keep up the good work!

Towing on those leaf springs broke the springs in and the truck is sitting just right. I'm really glad I haven't removed the extra leaf yet.

Maxx I did the same thing, turned my 1500 into a tow rig. Upped from 3.73 to 4.56 gears and it made a world of difference in power. (5.3LS, 4l60E) I need to do some helper springs in the rear tho. What sucks is the power comes at a cost, higher rpms on the interstate = MPG isnt as good on highway trips. its the same for normal driving though.

I just had Nitro 4.88 gears put into my 2021 Tacoma last week. With 33" tires it made the truck drive like stock again... maybe even better. No more gear hunting on the highway.

Are you worried about payload? Because all that gear, the big tires, the rack and everything you put in the bed and passengers all take away payload which takes away from your numbers for towing. Just curious if you’re worried about that or is the general consensus “fuck it”?

You should be using a load distributing hitch when towing over 5000 lbs, especially with a Raptor

It was good to test the leafs and it helped brake them in but I'll use the WD hitch that I have next time.

I have an 03 RAM 1500 quad-cab 4x4 with the 5.7 HEMI and I have gone from 31.5-inch tires to 35s with the stock ratio of 3.55:1. I drive 50/50 highway and city rarely going above 65-70. When I go off-road it is on the slower side driving up moderate fire roads. Most have said to go with 4.56 gears but some have said that 4.10 was plenty for them. The equation of (35/31.5)*3.55 gives a new ratio of 4.09:1. I don't know what to do. Could you help? Thanks!

I agree. I put Sumosprings on my Sierra 1500 and love them. I tow an 8k trailer in the Rocky Mountains. Ride empty is still great. Loaded it is firm yet comfortable and more stable with less squat. Sumosprings last forever without any service.

That truck has to be overloaded by 500-1000 pounds bare minimum. You have passengers, gear, fuel, 100 pounds of extra tires, tongue weight, etc. And raptors start out way limited on payload anyways. Have you gone over a scale? I'm not the weigh cops, but I saw a cute kid in the back that would make you want to be as safe as a school bus driver. When I went from a 42 pound stock tire to a 60 pound oversized tire I could instantly tell how much less effective my brakes were and how hard I had to stomp on the pedal at just normal cruising speeds. One time when I had to emergency brake I stomped the pedal as hard as it would go and I couldn't even kick in the ABS which means there wasn't enough braking force to even start to lock the tires.. The large tire gives more torque against your brake disc and caliper, plus the heavier tire has way more momentum to slow down. Have you considered upgrading your brakes if you wanna drive that overloaded truck with your kid in the back?
