My opinion on starting on a 600cc, or in this case, an R6. Spoiler: you'll be fine. Hope you enjoy.
My bike is a Yamaha 2008 R6 and I'm using the GoPro Hero 5.

You can start on any bike. 600cc bikes aren't death machines, ALL bikes can be death machines. It just takes responsibility to ride any bike, especially a 600 and up.

Teh StyLz So someone brand new would start on a cbr1000? yea, no. Anyone can start on any bike yes, but just like in life nobody starts at the top and you work your way up, same applies to sports bikes in my opinion. Because with each cc class is a new set of responsibilities financially being number one.

All about throttle control. I started on a 75 kz900. After that had a kz1000. Not a lot of top end on those but they are torque monsters. Had straight drag bars on both of them. Had a katana 600 and now a cbr600rr. Been riding for years now and still ride a 600. Love my 600.

@@Demiurge66 Well, started riding on my first FZR 1000 from 89'. 2 months later bought my first R1 RN12 from 04' One year later in 2018 changed to 15' S1000RR. Guess what? Got an appointment with my local dealership tomorrow. Interested in a beautiful red Panigale V4. Riding for 3 Years now, not a single drop, crash or similar accident. Few times on race track, still no fall. It's all about get a feeling for your bike and start by knowing you are shit and your bike can do much better than you.

I'm 39, got my license OCT2020 and my first bike is a Honda CBR600RR, with 0 experience prior to Harley MSF... I've ridden a mountain bike when I was a teenager and that's it... This vid is pretty accurate to what I went through. If you "Respect" the throttle it is fine... When I first got on the bike, I was pretty scared to do the speed limit 40mph lol... took me a few days and I was okay with it... I basically made sectioned off RPMs to train in until I felt comfortable to get to the next section of RPM, kind of like what this guy said.... it took me several weeks to a couple months to be able to redline it.

@HomeDefender30 2 жыл бұрын
@@phreak074 your underestimating the value of the MSF course you took. Learning proper safety and techniques go a long way, it’s the people with no training and no experience that jump on 600’s and hurt themselves. Seriously I forget the exact statistic, so I won’t make anything up here, but riders who have taken an MSF course are magnitudes less likely to be involved in crashes than those who have not.

Started on a 250 and 1500 miles later got an r6. I would have been in the hospital for sure if I started on my r6. I made a lot of mistakes learning how to ride which would definitely loop my r6 right on top of me. It feels considerably heavier too and less flickable. New riders have a hard time with low speed maneuvers and that’s why I wouldn’t recommend a 600 to any new rider.
@MrMilk-ug6gl

I came here to say this. I started on a ninja 250 and I made some small mistakes on that 250 that may have seriously hurt me if I was on a 600. I now have a Honda CBR 600RR and love it immensely, but you can't put a value starting with something smaller so you can make those mistakes.....a 600 is a lot of bike.....in comparison to some others it's not, but let's not be stupid and pretend like a 600 isn't a ridiculous amount of power. The 600 will be there later, don't hurt yourself! By this same logic in the video you can start on a liter bike..."be careful and dont be stupid" is entirely subjective and having that extra power just gives greater opportunity to make mistakes.

Great explanation on RPM, agree completely. Love the R6. i started on a HEAVY 95 Suzuki 600, in my experience "dangers" for beginners include: "monkey" throttle on starts. Passing irresponsibly in traffic (fast and without warning to other drivers) and turning at high speeds (anything above recommended speed limit). And I might add that "Intimidation" (being scared) will cloud the mind (common sense) for new riders. (Most) people know what the right thing to do to handle situations are but the "first time experience" clouds judgment. I would say to combat the "first time experience" would be multiple short rides in low traffic or no traffic would be the answer.

Not yet got my license but hopefully by the summer I will have. People I talk to say you're crazy, don't start on an R6 work your way up to one. i started on a '14 CBR650F (non abs). never sat on a motorcycle, only had my permit, grabbed a used one with 8k miles for $6,350 at the dealer. spent an hour in their parking lot making loops, learning the throttle, clutch control, progressive braking. rode it home 35miles one way right after that. 50mph curvy roads all the way home. i spent many days watching videos before hand, including Twist of The Wrist. (godly video) and many others. since then ive ridden 2.5k miles. no hiccups. ive spent a lot of time practicing low speed maneuvers, progressive braking, down shifting. i drive like i have a set of eyes on the back of my head. i didnt buy my motorcycle to drive like a dickhead; i bought it for the feeling of freedom, the therapeutic effect it brings me. the lifestyle. ive loved every moment since. i dont regret my purchase, but i know i would have if i bought a two cylinder 250-500cc. i originally wanted a 600RR but i opted for the 650F due to the slightly more upright position for more daily commuting. i dont want back pain as i know i plan to take it on road trips. speaking of which: im going to florida from chicago on july 11th. 1,250 miles one way. :) rip my ass cheeks.

People exaggerate the type of bike one should start on DRASTICALLY. I started on a 250. I've ridden all the major 600cc super bikes except the GSXR (R6, CBR, Daytona, ZX6R). The only issue I see others having are the basics such as handling the throttle and shifting, balance, body position when turning, braking properly etc. These all can be learned on almost any bike, but I will say 250s are almost fool proof due to how slow they and how light they are.

You can, but you shouldn't. Remember first learning how to drive a car for the first time? Pretty unsettling right? Now imagine learning how to drive in a super car vs a little honda civic. Makes it all a much better experience in the civic doesn't it? You can all do what you want but theres a reason why professionals and many experienced motorcyclists do not recommend a super sport as your first bike. The impatience of many young or newer riders to get into motorcycling on the bike they want to ride vs the bike they should be riding will forever be a problem. You make up a large percentage of the "death machine" statistics after you go down and wreck your shit. I know my words will be read and ignored, so fuck it.

Well.. if you just don't be a douche bag and get rid of the ego, then starting on a 600 isn't going to be much different. If I start on a 125cc, got used to it. Then realize I'd like to go higher, not only have you just wasted money on the 125cc, you're going to be comfortable with that bike, then say I decide to upgrade. Now I'm going to have to spend even more time getting used to a different bike. While if I had just started on a 600cc in the beginning, you'll have A. Saved probably at least £5000 B. You'll have gotten used to the 600cc in the first place, if you only start on a 600cc to start with you're not going to know any different. The only difference between a 600cc and a 125cc, is probably a bit heavier, slightly more difficult to control. All issues can be avoided regardless of what cc you start on or even just bike in general you start on.. it wont matter as long as you're not an idiot.

I agree. I started on a 650. But only because I researched it, and found it to be a bike with a smooth, predictable, and forgiving powerband. If that bike didn't exist, I'd probably start on a 300.

Recently i’ve built a newfound passion for motorcycles and want to get my own bike to start riding. KZbin has been recommending me a handful of these “Starting on 600cc Bike. Worth it or not?” and well, even though i personally feel very comfortable on my friends dirt bike, that’s maybe around 150cc’s, to the point where i can literally full throttle it and reach the max speed on dirt roads... I’m still leaning and 99% likely as of right now to go out and buy myself a ninja 300 only because I know myself and i’m a sucker for speed. To avoid the temptation of the power of a super sport bike, i’ll buy a 300 first and then sell it and buy a 600. From the prices i’ve been seeing online for used bikes i’ll only lose $1-2k for the upgrade. and that’s only as far as the investment goes. i think that amount of money is worth the learning experience. not sure why i said all of this, maybe so that somebody else in my position will read it and have a better understanding. in the end, i’m not scared to die. i’m just scared of living the rest of my life handicapped.

You can do it and you'll have lots of fun, but you'll be way more comfortable and grow skill faster on bikes in the future if you just grind out a year or two on a 250 Ninja. The fearlessness builds at hyperspeed on a little beginner bike. If you ride a lot, you'll be leaning it over and scraping pegs and having the throttle wide open 90% of the time on your commute by the end of the season, whereas you'll probably still be scared of that 600 for a while and rightfully so. Hitting 12k RPM feels like warp speed just got engaged and yeah, you'll keep coming back for the rush, but all you'll really be learning is how to lean forward and mash.

You can start on any bike. The main thing is throttle control. When you slip the throttle on a 250 it’s forgiving. When you slip it on a 600 you can come off the ground. Just be easy with the throttle and learn your friction zone and emergency braking.

I own a Honda CB 600 f Hornet with 102 HP and i started on it. Everybody kept telling me that 100 HP is too much... It isnt. A 600 inlne 4 will never ever surprise you if you are even half compentent. It only has power with RPM so you can controll that pretty well. In a straight line i used all the power right away because why the hell not? But as soon as i got close to a corner i started slowing down early and chose a high gear in in order to not overwhelm myself when i open up the throttle when the corner opens up. Whenever i felt the urge to really go for it while cornering i actually forced myself to drive especially slow in this corner. Its only after maybe 2 month that i allowed myself to go a bit faster.

My plan is to snag a tiny lil’ used bike as cheap as I can while still having a decent bike. No worries about hurting it, and I will learn until I don’t usually drop it and and am able to learn the basics. Then would come the 600 to supply fun for pretty much the rest of however long I survive. Then again, that plan might completely change.

Start on a bike you don't mind laying down and scratching up or buy some after market fairings cuz you will most likely drop the bike you learn to ride on. I started on a Ninja 650 with the v-twin engine it was perfect to learn on. Had good torque just wasn't as fast as an inline-4 in it's power band. Upgraded to that hot little babe in my pic...'13 R6 and LOVE it!

I have to say this makes more sense of all just because let us say you have your fully car license depending on your region and your first car is an “Audi R8” considering your tax bracket. Would you drive an Audi R8 like an R8 or like a Toyota Corolla when first starting out? The question is a matter of responsiveness and responsibility and frugality versus whiskey control and amateur management

To be honest it's all "catch all" advice to say start on a smaller/lighter bike. When giving general advice without knowing someone you can only assume the worst, so people recommend smaller cc's. Some people take to motorcycling very easily, I was basically ready to do time trials by the end of my MSF course because I had a lot of bicycle experience when I was younger as well as being a class-winning kart racer so the combination of 2 wheel handling and understanding of throttle, brake, and input control all was like cross-training for riding a motorcycle. That said, some people are hamfisted, don't understand 2 wheel physics, don't put effort into learning the physics of motorcycles, etc. and if you put them on a liter bike and said "go play" they'd whiskey throttle it into a wall and be dead the first day. The same people that would actually ask for advice and research how to ride are the same ones that can usually start on something more powerful and still be OK. The other side is just the financial side of things, fully insuring a liter bike as a 16 year old might cost more than the bike itself, so getting something smaller will save you a fortune and you won't be able to even come close to utilizing the power of a liter bike without a few years of experience, and I mean like race training experience.

The license is super expensive as well (around 2300 dollars average, but depends). After I get done studying I will get my A2 license and buy an MT07, perhaps de restrict it :)
