I agree with you. Windows 7 was the best version of Windows. Microsoft should have stopped at Windows 7 and just continued updating it. They should never have started Windows 8 which was nothing like Windows 7 and from then on they took away more features. I liked the old Windows better which is Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Not Windows 8 with the Metro Theme and it's no start menu that it is now with Windows 10 and 11 also.

Linux Mint is the one I recommend to Folks (or Kubuntu) when they want to switch away from Windows. It's familiar enough to what they're used to and a good gateway towards unix-land. I've bounced around, especially when gaming drivers aren't working, but landed multiple times on Arch/Manjaro and Ubuntu/Mint. If you're curious about arch-based linux, definitely stick with base repos, unless you want to add standard Arch User Repository (AUR).

The best part about linux updates is that they're smaller compartmentalized updates, and there's only updates for what you've added to your system. If you haven't added much, and just have the base apps that come with they're very quick! All of this depends on what you've installed on, flash storage is going to be faster than a spinning disk (platter) drive, but you're right in most cases updates are much quicker.

@@gaborm4767 I like Linux Mint but the problem is a lot of the software it comes with I don't use. For instance I don't like the media player. I prefer VLC as it is a better player and plays everything and I don't use LibreOffice. I just like to have a Word Viewer a PDF viewer and the text editors. I don't need a full office suite.I also use Waterfox and Google Chrome instead of Firefox. So on Mint I spent a lot of time uninstalling the software I didn't want then installing the software that I do want. Where as on Debian I can install the the main core desktop environment then choose what software I want to add. I think that's much better. Ubuntu does have a minimal install option. Where you just get the desktop environment and can install what apps you want afterwards. But it also installs Snaps which I don't like. Also you cannot remove it as it's part of Ubuntu. With Debian you can also choose if you want Snaps or Flatpak. I think Linux Mint should come with a minimal install option like Ubuntu. Though as it is aimed at new users maybe that's why they don't have it.

If you're someone that just browses websites and checks emails Linux MIGHT be just fine for you depending on your hardware. If you're someone that works with in movies/tv/music Linux might be useful but the software for Windows is better in every regard. Take the music industry for example, which is highly reliant on VST plugins and industry standard software like Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase. Linux can't run most of the commercial high quality plugins and has no equivalent software. However if you work in web dev / dev ops Linux is great at this specialist area. My point being that anyone claiming Linux will work for you without examining your specific situation should be disregarded. There are things it can do and there are things it simply cannot do. It may work fantastically for you or it may be useless for the task you have in mind.

Props where props are due - Looking through my Pi-Hole shows that my system isn't transmitting any telemetry or data behind my back, unlike Windows which still tries to ping back to the mothership despite all data collection being disabled.

Hi Andrea! Great video thank you! I just wanted to share a thought: IMHO I think that GNU/Linux is free for someone that does not value his/her time. Because if you do not know how to use and operate the system, you have obviously to spend some time learning how to use it, customize it, etc., that is something that people call it the "learning curve". That is the price you have to pay for it. Despite that, I think that this time is absolutely well paid, or said a little differently, it is a well paid time, or a good invested time, however you want to call it.

Great video! But I would like to point out that Fedora is not more difficult to use than Ubuntu/Debian-based distributions, at least in my experience. It could be a little more difficult to find the right commands when installing packages, but the community has made it way easier than it was a few years ago. I chose to install Debian on the laptop of a friend of mine and some things didn't work as expected, but then he switched to Fedora and most of those issues went away (in part thanks to the newer kernel versions and driver support). I have gotten to know Apt very well which both the Ubuntu and Debian based distros use. If I were to move to Fedora I would have to start all over again and it's not the same. I took a look at some Fedora spins on Distrosea and some of the desktop software was missing. On the LXQT desktop there was no control center. I don't know if that's a Fedora thing and they just don't include it. Because on the Debian and Ubuntu version of LXQT the control center is included in the desktop. Also as Fedora has a different package manager and system the commands and everything will be different. I think Debian or Ubuntu based Linux with Apt is better. It is easy for new users as well as experienced users to get along with.
@sofiaritz
@sofiaritz 20 сағат бұрын
@@AndreaBorman Most of the commands are the same, the only real difference (for most end users) is yum vs apt. Most apt commands have their equivalent version in yum, the only thing that's different is that the package names are not the same. Also, most non-power users don't deal with package managers directly as they tend to use the built-in software centers. I do agree that the apt community is larger, making things like finding commands to install certain packages easier. I'm not familiar with the LXQT spin, only the GNOME and KDE ones. In the GNOME and KDE spins, things like software center are included.
@AndreaBorman
@AndreaBorman 19 сағат бұрын
@@sofiaritz It's the same in Debian and Ubuntu. Most of the time you can use just the package manager or the software center. The terminal is another option if you want it. I find it good for removing left over packages from software that has been removed. Because when Synaptic removes something. It doesn't always remove some of the software that was installed with that software when you remove it. On Apt we can just use the "sudo apt autoremove" command in the terminal, which takes care of that. It is a harmless way to remove any left behind software that is no longer needed. You can always install that software again if later on you decide you want it. You can also do updates in the terminal as well as in Synaptic and in the software centers. Some things can only be done in the terminal but that's very rare. And only done if something breaks or needs fixing but that doesn't happen very often.

Quick overview of how things work in Linux world - 1. There are six major lines (the original master distro from waaaaaay back and a lot of later spin-off distros of different names based off each of those 6 master distros). These are the original master distros: (a) Debian (b) Redhat (Fedora is the one they offer to the public) (c) Arch (d) Suse (Open Suse is the one they offer to the public) (e) Gentoo and (f) Slackware 2. The succeeding next versions of the core of Linux is called "The Kernel" is made by "The Linux Foundation" and "Distro Makers" ( like the 6 lines listed above) take that core and build their specific versions of Linux Distros around it and then release that to the public. But yeah, start with Linux Mint.

Fun KDE trivia. KDE prior to 4 had a welcome wizard which asked the user which system they are more familiar with, and it will theme it, change how the icons react(single click vs double click) among other neat changes based on if the user chooses "Windows", "Mac", "UNIX", and I think there was a forth option, which may have been KDE I think. It's been awhile since I used that welcome wizard, like maybe 10 years or more. Can't remember how long ago KDE 4 released. But it was a really neat feature I wish they would bring back.

This is mesmerizingly fantastical. A good plain OS, with your favorite local Transformer Model system, and you are ready to rule. Come to think of it, we only need a transformer installed, nothing else, no OS, no drivers, only access to internet, or locally pre-trained on everything we need. It only needs some form of input, and some form of output.

Andrea, Looks like you have 4 GB RAM single channel. You can upgrade that to 8GB dual channel or even 16GB. It will double the igpu/memory performance. You could then use wayland too instead of X11. 64 bit applications benefit a lot from dual channel memory which is 4GB+. Though i think your chip supports upto 64GB RAM, depending on how many slots you have.

There is also a Wayland session that comes with KDE but I find that the screen recording software doesn't work. A lot of other users on here say they have the same problem. So there are still bugs. I think X11 is better until they sort it out.

@AndreaBorman
@AndreaBorman 17 сағат бұрын
@@moutai675 The problem is that there are bugs in Wayland. So I don't know why they have brought it out. Wayland is just not ready for full time use yet until those bugs and problems are fixed. I use Lightdm display manager which automatically logs you into X11 as it uses it by default. Unless you choose the Wayland session at the login screen. So when I use Gnome or KDE I always get X11 which I am happy with. I prefer X11 over Wayland to be honest.

Never been a KDE fan myself. Gnome shell is actually pretty slick and I've gotten used to it, so when I install Fedora, that's what I use. When I install Mint or LMDE, of course I use Cinnamon. I like both desktop environments and can easily and happily move between them.

If your all time on pc is about multimedia, social media, office work; then switch to linux without thinking, you'll be able to find a distro to your liking and trust me its worth it, you're not gonna look back. If your daily time on pc is rather *productive* you might want to check and list how many of your "cant let it go" apps and software work properly on linux. If you're a new and upcoming game dev (like me), there's no preferred OS, we are all chained to Windows, you have to use both of them at the same time, a Linux distro and a Windows crap at the same time... But sure you can have a Linux distro for your personal pc, that is not related to any work.

@@JustNothingHere Yes Linux Mint LMDE6 Faye is based on Debian Bookworm. Though the advantage is that it has all of the Mint tools such as Software Manager and Update Manager. Which cannot be installed on Debian as they only work on Mint.

Last week I helped an elderly couple setting up a new laptop running Windows 11 for them. I swear this Microsoft account requirement is sucking the joy out of helping people. They buy this plaything for solitaire, recipes, and the odd email and the first chance it gets, it starts babbling about fingerprint recognition and targeted ads. It's impressive how Microsoft somehow have managed to make their (pre-installed!) OS more of a hassle to set up and use than Linux.

Yes they should although you can install it on Mint. It would be nice if they still did a KDE desktop. I don't understand why not as a lot of people do use KDE. It is also a very good desktop. One of the best.

I didn't like Windows 10 either. I used the Beta version when it first came out and a lot of the features they had in Windows 7 and 8 were gone. No Winhelp files so I could read the help files for my 16 bit software. No way to disable automatic updates. They did have support for Metro Apps on Netbooks unlike Windows 8 and 8.1. So I was able to open Metro Apps on my netbook. But I still didn't like it. The desktop is ugly and they changed the icons in Windows Explorer the file manager. Gone was the nice look of Windows 7. Those were some of the many reasons I never upgraded to Windows 10. I just stayed on Windows 7 and 8 until none of the software worked anymore. Because I could not get updated web browsers and other software. Because they had stopped support for Windows 7 and 8. That's when I switched to Linux. That was in 2022 and I have been using Linux full time ever since.

Switched to manjaro about a year ago. I did break it a couple of times. Sometimes I didn't quite understand what I was doing back then, and I broke many things like audio when I completely removed pulse audio and replaced it with pipe wire. Kinda.. 😅 At least now pipe wire is properly installed. But yeah, once you switch there's no going back, unless when I want to play some games. Lutris and proton is great, but for some games there's a strong performance impact.
