I always thought of it as an unrealistic wish. I love monkeys and I spend hours every day watching and researching their behaviors. They are not happy in captivity unless you can provide them other monkeys and unlimited outdoor stimulation. People with single family homes cannot provide that

If I could get a rescue (obviously not likely) I absolutely would love to raise a macaque. I have been researching and investigating, daydreaming. But I couldn't live w myself knowing that a mother was slaughtered or maybe survived but is now grieving a child because I want a baby monkey. I go back and forth because right now the troops are completely overpopulated and they are killing young on their own . But if I can save a baby I would. But I wouldn't decide at maturity whoops not cute and dump it, lock it up etc. Just a dream. They should be w monkeys

I use to for years want to get a little monkey, but when I started learning all I could learn about them doing much research I came to realize more than anything it's cruel to keep a monkey pet they need to be with their own kind in a troop in the forest in the trees. Not wearing clothes or diapers not in a cage not in a house they need trees and their troops

Believe it or not animals get domesticated. Cats, dogs, horses... Etc. They will breed monkeys to be domesticated eventually. This discussion isn't black or white when the ecosystem is being destroyed.

Of course when they are babies, they are adorable and easy to manage. Then they become juveniles and you will raise a monkey stuck in the "terrible twos" stage for 30+ years. I have watched so many videos of surrendered monkeys because most people cannot handle a strong, aggressive 2 year old with sharp teeth for very long. Get a dog or cat and leave wild animals alone.

Most people don't like to think about that last part, but biological change, whether through natural selection or selective breeding, requires _death._ Good on ya for recognizing that "domestication" can't be done to individual animals, only to entire species. Too many people confuse, "domesticated", for, "tamed" or even for "housebroken".

You don't need to think once, let alone twice. You don't need a monkey and a monkey doesn't need you. It's expensive, it's dangerous, and your life will revolve around it. Finding a vet who can treat it will be a challenge, and also consider that many monkeys that are sold as pets were obtained illegally and were ripped away from their mothers, who were probably killed. The process of obtaining these animals is not ethical.

The USA outlawed importing of monkeys for pets in 1975. Breeders in the States charge AT LEAST $5,000.00 per animal. Please keep in mind that only one fourth of states allow them as pets. They are hideous, filthy, screeching, BITING creatures that are NOT FIT to be pets!

That depends, heavily, upon the type of monkey. Pygmy Marmosets are normally captive born and raised now for the pet trade. It tends to make them both easier to handle and care for as well as providing a heartier group compared to the wild caught ones that can easily get sick from diseases from humans and die.

So are fish, lizards, and around 90% of everything kept as a pet. Monkeys (or any primates) SHOULD NOT be pets, to be clear. They have complicated social and psychological needs that a human cannot meet, no matter how hard they try (unless they have an entire troop of monkeys living in a giant zoo enclosure). But the “wild animals shouldn’t be pets!” mantra only hurts monkeys and other animals that humans cannot properly care for… because it makes the people speaking out against it look both ignorant and… well… kind of nuts. “Wild” means “not domesticated via selective breeding to the point of becoming a new species”. Tropical fish? Wild. Geckos? Wild. HAMSTERS? Surprise-they’re WILD! Even if their parents going back a hundred generations were born in captivity, they are still a species of wild animal. So please, please… avoid making statements like this, that just make people who are on the fence about getting a monkey think that all the naysayers are over-the-top extremists who want to free all the hamsters and fish.

Unless someone owns a zoo (or enough cash to build the equivalent of zoo habitats), obtains the animals by ethical means (such as by taking in abandoned primates or big cats from unwise owners who got in over their heads), and also has the knowledge/staff/security to handle potentially VERY dangerous animals, it’s completely unethical to go out and buy a monkey or pantheran. But… did you edit your original comment to add the words “Monkeys are” at the beginning of the first sentence? Because as I recall, the first line was simply “Wild animals should remain in the wild”, which has very different connotations than specifically calling out monkeys and/or panthers as unethical to keep. I would not have had any objections to it as it is now. I only speak up when people start throwing around the words “wild animals” or “exotics” as though they’re inherently problematic, regardless of the species. Some are, some aren’t. They can’t just be indiscriminately lumped together. All wild animals that end up in the hands of a human for whatever reason should be taken to a sanctuary or rehabilitation center. Then if the animals cannot be introduced back into their natural habitat, then and only then would I agree with you. It doesn't matter how good or poorly the living space is, even with their diet being as if in the wild, nothing can replace their natural instinct of wanting to be in their own natural habitat and depending upon the animal, to be with others of their own species as some wild animals are very social. When you say “wild animals”, are you meaning animals that were actually living in the wild and (for whatever reason) ended up in captivity? In that case, I would agree with you in most cases, with the exception of fish/amphibians/reptiles that were collected legally, humanely, and in a way that did not endanger or disrupt the wild population. Collection of those species for the pet trade is essential to conservation, as many are endangered by habitat loss and environmental degradation. Also, those wild caught individuals are typically used to establish genetically diverse, captive-bred populations. However, I fully agree that snatching something like a monkey from its mother and troop is appalling. I think it’s equally appalling to see that happen to captive monkeys bred to produce pets, though… so it isn’t such a matter of it being wild, but of it being a highly intelligent, highly social animal. 😢 Even if they could breed out all the other problematic behaviors, I still wouldn’t be okay with taking a baby monkey away from its mother, when it’s meant to remain with her for years, or even stay within the same troop for life. When I use the term “wild animals”, I’m referring to all non-domesticated species. Most “exotics” being sold and purchased today come from generations of captivity, but are not genetically different enough from their ancestors to be considered “domesticated”. Chinchillas, sugar gliders, bearded dragons, and even cockatiels would fall under this category. They are not actually much-if at all-different than their wild brethren, but they were born in captivity and raised by humans. Breeding for temperament and the like will probably create domestic versions someday (of the mammals at least), just as dogs originally came to be.

I have seen her in a Documentary on TV and I think there is some type of control where you have to show them "you are the alpha". That's where I speculate you kind of make them scared of you, to gain total control of that animal. That's something you don't have to do to a pet dog or cat. I do not believe in monkey breeders because they take them away from the mom at 2 or 3 days. No different than poachers stealing wild babies. Also kissing a momkey or transferring candy from a human to monkey, etc gross! I get jacked up when I see monkey owners that allow them on kitchen counters and some let them put their filthy hands/fingers into food and I have seen the Owner of the capuchin let it dig in and eat the food that was prepared sitting on the kitchen counter. I can't imagine filming that and letting people see just how unsanitary you are.

I thought like a lot of people that owning a monkey would be easy and not as difficult as even some domesticated animals. However, the more I slowly began to learn about the different breeds the more I began to narrow down to a couple I thought I would want. Then I learned as much as was made available to me about the 2 breeds I had decided would be the best to own. I finally learned that I would never own a monkey, that it would be the other way around. I would never under any circumstance try and take on the care of a primate.

They either have to drug the parents cause the father will attack or they net both parents and get the mom to drop the baby and they do this just after the mom has given birth so there's no bonding but it still puts stress on the monkeys. All someone has to do is smile at one and show their teeth, then you could have a serious problem and huge law suit. Also, the way they get these cute little monkeys is horrible. They go into the jungle and look for moms with new baby monkeys, they shoot the mom and take the clinging baby from it's dead or dying mother. They stick it in a crate and ship it off for sale. You shouldn't even watch videos with pet monkeys, it just exacerbates the problem. Exotic pets should be illegal in the US for health and safety reasons.

I'm not saying this capuchin monkey was smiling, but research has found that chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans can smile in the same way as humans. They can also laugh. It's a breathy, panting kind of sound when playing, especially when tickled. There's is no grimace, just an open mouth, though, and that's also their "smile."

Yes Monkey should be left alone in their natural habitat, but if one has to have a monkey, I believe with Love and dedication it is possible. Like she mentioned if it wasn't from her monkeys protective instinct by attacking that lunatic saving her life. See… that’s the kind of overblown, blanket statement that just encourages people to dismiss all the warnings about not buying monkeys on a whim. Do you understand the definition of “wild” animal? All animals were wild, originally. Some were domesticated over many thousands of years of selective breeding. A dog is domesticated. On the other hand, everything from a gecko to a guppy is still a “wild” animal-regardless of whether they were born in the wild or in captivity. Fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates are ALL “wild” animals. To compare keeping a tropical fish tank to buying a highly intelligent primate from someone who tore it from its screaming mother’s arms… is absurd. (For the record, the woman in this video appears to exclusively keep monkeys that have been discarded by previous owners. If she didn’t take them in… many would probably be destroyed, simply because there are nowhere near enough zoos or sanctuaries to take in the many, many monkeys private owners want to be rid of. It isn’t perfect, but I still think it’s a better alternative to destroying the animal, or else leaving it abandoned in the wilderness to die. They have been raised in captivity, so they sadly can’t be expected to survive in their native habitats.)

I used to sneak into the zoo and spend hours with a couple of capuchin monkeys feeding them bits of apple. They are crazy smart and funny but they are not pets. These guys have big fangs. This monkey had them removed. That woman should be locked up.

There is not one person in the world who is able to care for a non-human primate the way they need to. They are social animals that live in troops and have specific needs that a big cage in s 3 bedroom house in a suburb with a self-professed monkey whisperer just can’t meet. I’ve seen her in action. She’s very good. But has an enormous ego and at the end of the day, being good at something doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do and it certainly shouldn’t be used to encourage others. 😡

My cousin had a pet 🙊. I met him when he was very young. NO ONE said "Don't touch him." I extended a finger and that horrible a***ole BIT ME! An old guy told me a tale about the organ grinders monkeys & why they used cups to collect coins. When they were kids, they would heat the coin up on a stove & offer it to the monkey, who would grab the coin. The monkey would then kick off, drop the coin, pick it up, drop it again, pick it back up, all the while getting angrier & angrier. He claimed they started giving the monkeys cups to avoid this happening.

35 yrs. ago a cpl. invited me over for lunch, but as soon as their door opened i smelled something awful and saw a small pet monkey jumping around (in a diaper) and screeching. So… does that include hamsters? Because scientifically, hamsters are wild animals. “Wild” does not inherently mean something is a terrible pet. Many common pets are technically wild, since they AREN’T domesticated (meaning, they haven’t been selectively bred for many generations, to the point of being a separate species from their wild ancestors). Monkeys (and all primates) ARE TERRIBLE PETS, but that’s not simply because they’re wild animals… it’s because they have social and psychological needs that humans CANNOT provide outside of a zoo setting. On the other hand, something like a gecko or a hamster can be a great pet. I really cringe at blanket statements about “wild animals”, because it just makes people dismiss everyone saying “don’t get a monkey!” as a whacko extremist who wants to set all the goldfish free… :/ Now, if you mean that all animals should be accepted and acknowledged as what they are, rather than used as stand-ins for human children… I’m inclined to agree. But making broad statements about “wild animals” is usually a bad idea, as their needs differ tremendously. Some can be kept very contentedly, and even far exceed their typical “wild” life expectancy in a human home (like a gecko), while others should never be treated as family pets (like monkeys).
