I do this for a living and my wife can't see why I sit here and watch the same thing I was doing all day long..."you must be a glutton for punishment" she says. I tell her "plans fail when there is no consultation, but there is accomplishment through many advisers." - Proverbs 15:22. A craftsman always seeks to perfect his work, what better way than to consult and get advise from another accomplished craftsman who takes pride in doing it right! I was surprised to see it in a house. They're very common in hotels, where the drains run down common walls from floor to floor, but there's only so much floor thickness you can work with. BUT, I like that he pointed it out, to show there's more than one way to accomplish something without having to full demo, you just have to KNOW you can find parts to adapt to the configuration. A lot of people don't know those parts exist, so the fact he pointed it out made me very happy. That's a dude who know how to teach his knowledge. I like that.

One of the best shower pan installations I have seen on You Tube. I always tile and grout the floor first for the same reasons you mention. Also, to me, it just makes common sense to have the wall tile installed last, lapping over the floor tile - that way the water will always shed away from the joint where the floor tile meets the wall or the water will never ever have the ability to even get close to it - I started doing it that way over 30 years ago.
@MrRaptorman19752 жыл бұрын
Nah, Lay the walls first down to a ledger. Then the floor. Then the bottom row of tile. You don't want to be walking on your fresh pan tile. The thinset needs to be full cured before you put any traffic on it. Shedding isn't really relevant in a shower application. A roof it makes sense, showers that use waterproofing systems, it's not relevant. Water can get in just as easy either way.
@hankclingingsmith87072 жыл бұрын
DO YOU KNOW WHAT SEEPAGE IS OR WEEPING, IT CAN GET BEHIND THERE. GROUT AND THINSET ARE NOT WATERPROOF.
@MrRaptorman19752 жыл бұрын
@@hankclingingsmith8707 First whether you stack the wall on the floor or the wall behind the floor, the pan is pitched to flow to the drain. There isn't enough water sitting on that grout line to seep or weep, no more than on the grout on the floor of the shower. So that's just a silly claim. Second, grout can and often today is actually waterproof. Epoxy, Urethane, even many powder grouts like Power Grout and Mapei FA are pretty much watertight grouts. They aren't your Daddy's cementious grouts. Then there is the fact that you have a waterproofing system behind the tile that is designed spherically to handle any water or moisture that gets behind the tile and grout. Hank, I am not sure what you do for a living, but this is my life and has been for nearly 20 years. I have dedicated a great deal of time and effort into making sure that I know the science and knowledge behind tile installation.

If you need it for overlap you have no faith in your waterproofing and don't understand that waste will still get the regardless of the orientation.

Just watched part one and am now half way through part two. My father, my uncle and myself a couple months ago gutted my parents bathroom down to sub floor, wall studs and new ceiling drywall as well. We did as much work as we could, drywall, cement board on the shower, built a bench in the shower. Did plumbing and electrical ourselves. We had to pay a tile contractor to do exactly what you are doing now, and then the tiles. $4900 we had to pay for the job. We had to rush the tile contractor to finish everything in 48 hours so it was a needed extra price on the work. This was all for my Grandmother coming home to live with my parents from the hospital with her second stroke in two years. It was a necessary reno due to her condition. Long story long, we could’ve saved a few thousand dollars and wait time with scheduling knowing what you provide on your videos. That being said, I'm cringing at you not using gloves. I protect my hands from the damaging materials not only when grouting, but also when setting. Tile stores carry a brand called Thickster that I use with thinset, and I use some black, long cuff gloves that HD carries when grouting. Not sure if you know how to cover a tub. -cut 1/2” plywood about 3” short of the length of the tub and 1” wider -example is the plywood for the top should be 57”x33” -put cheap foam pad down on tub top edge the place the plywood there -then measure from the floor to the plywood and cut it say 18”x57” and put that to cover the face of tub -screw the corner together Now you can drop a hammer or tile or mud and use it as a work surface rather than disrespecting the clients new tub.

Pro tip for slowing the reaction- use a TINY bit of ice in place of some of your water in that grout mix. The phase change absorbs WAY MORE energy than cool water possibly can (same reason sweat evaporating can cool you down). It’ll open up your work window with no adverse impact on the hydration process, so everything else is the same. It’s a tip I learned from a civil engineer who specialized in concrete mix design. Now I use CSA cement whenever possible because every process moves so much faster with an identical work time.

I re-did my bathroom with a full marble seat and the full shower but the DETAILS is what I missed much of though I used a pan liner floor and when I see it now, i simply cringe with the KNOW HOW of how much a better job i coulda done. Thanks Boyz, you freaking ROCK.

More than obviously knowing what you're doing and perfectly explaining the techniques and whys and wherefores of what you're doing, your presentation skills and personability make it feel like I've got mate working with me on this job: If I feel a bit lost, I can just come back and check your video. Thanks a heap, this is a 10/10 from Australia!

That grout is the best, the versatility to do joints from 1/8”-1/2 with the sealant mixed in , it’s just awesome. Nice job

I appreciate your taking the time to show tips for DIY guys. I don't have friends in the construction field so I don't have anyone to pick their brains, this kind of video is really helpful.

Nice job. Clear concise direct information. My Dad and I have been in the trades since 1992. I wish we could have figured out how to capture our work the way you have. You and your boy do an amazing job. I’m sure you’re proud. And you should be.

Nice tutorial for the kerdi system. I have never done it in my 20 plus years of installing showers. I'm kinda old school. But it's always good to expand your knowledge. Thanks.

I regret not watching your video before we had a bathroom renovation..shower door not plumb when slid closed..floating soap dish fell 2x's..I just did that repair..and maybe 2 days after I finished soap dish I noticed a leak coming from a outside corner..which is what brought me to your professional work...I know the company we hired didn't do the waterproofing job at the corners that you do..we had the job completed just before pandemic hit..like 2 weeks before lock down..I live up the road in Burlington County...I will be hiring you if any other jobs I need done...done right the 1st time!!😊...Thanks for video

You guys are great. Humorous but informative. Mr Studpack Sr. you have the gift of explaining clearly while you’re working and that makes for a very enjoyable video. Great job again.

I like the way you explain what you are doing and why. You make it look easy but I know it's not always the case. Preparation and knowing how to use the right products, is the key. I'm not a professional tile guy but as a retired carpenter, I had a chance to learn tile work from some really good tile guys. I still like learning new tricks. That's why I like watching your videos. Thanks

Thank you for tiling the shower floor first. I've always done it that way for exactly the same reason you gave, plus having the bottom edge of the wall tile sitting on top of the floor tile provides better water management for all the water flowing down the surface of the wall tile. It just makes so much better sense.

As a professional roofer, I heartily agree. From a water-management perspective, it would never have even occurred to me to run the wall tile first.

I've done about everything, residentially. But, tile work I have not. I have complete confidence in the mud pack pan process if ever I need to. Paul, you're killing it my friend. Stud Pack's videos are like This Old House quality in my book... with a touch of comedy. Thank you

Good job fellas. I watched this to pick up something I don’t do when using Kerdi. Cutting the membrane after water test is genius!!! I’ve been installing Kerdi since 2005. The cost has doubled since, but I love it.

I enjoy your videos, they remind me of Mike Holmes' shows. But because you're dedicating a lot of time to one specific thing in each video, you can add a lot of detail and explanation for WHY you do something a certain way, and what the goal is to have it finished just right. And I like that you do more than the minimum required. People need to see that, and people need to see that you can go the extra mile for very little extra money most of the time. BTW, this isn't to compare you to Holmes. But he's the guy I respect most in the home improvement world, so believe me when I say this is all a huge compliment for your work ethic and practices. Made me subscribe on the very first video I watched, and then navigated your channel for more videos. I'm pretty good at home improvement, renos and restorations, and you've included a few ideas/hacks to doing something better or more efficiently than I've done, so I appreciate learning extra stuff to make what I do better. So thank you for that. Keep doing good work!

i have never seen this contractor before nor had i ever seen his vids until now.. i have to say, just from this vid, i can tell he is a great person from the way he speak AND the look on his face. people might not know but how you are will show in ur face as you get older. if ur a butt of a person or a happy person, ur face will show it as u age. great tips you guys are giving for the average guy.

Nice Job! I too am from south Louisiana (Cajun Territory). I'm a home contractor doing repairs, renos, restorations and remodeling. I do a shower job now and then and generally stack the walls first but I have laid the pan a couple times because of small mosaics and penny tile. Keep up the good work and putting out your informative vids!

Well done! Not exactly like I’ve been doing it for 20 plus years but there is more than 1 way to get to Rome. I always like seeing real old time installers that probably tore out the old lead pans installed liners/ weep systems and now we get to use these fleece membranes which speed it up so much. Good job guys!
