I totally agree, Casio was my first watch and i am definitely a fan boy. I do acknowledge the marketing skills and qualities of Rolex, but for me the brand is useless. They will never sell me one for example, even if i had the money for it. It is a status symbol before anything else. Let me have my humble Casio's, that will keep me more than happy for the rest of my life!

Completely agree. Rolex is great but it is now more like jewelry than anything else. Casio still has real utility. Will be interesting to see the future for these brands. I think Casio is doing great with things like Oceanus and the all steel G Shocks. At the same time they don't abandon the lower end with great watches like the Royale, value packed Edifices and solar powered Lineage and MTP models, use of titanium, MiP displays. Design that influence others, has heritage yet evolves. Now Rolex, should demand slacken or perception on them change is not really that different from a host of other brands.

I used to believe watches like Rolex costing thousands or more must be the best in every way, from good accuracy to more durable and can actually take a hit. I thought those watches must be even more low maintenance and just keep going without any issues. I also used to think I had to have a platinum watch, in order to be a real watch guy and get with the program. Fast forward to today it's a good thing I became interested enough in watches to learn all I can from videos like yours, and to just get what I like the most. I would never trade my Casios and Armitrons for the platinum watch I apparently wanted for Christmas at age 11! 18 years later, I'm asking myself when did I write that?! Found that written in ink sorting through some old stuff, ha!

Rolex is a watch, but should not wear it when walking in a "bad neighborhood". Wearing a cheap Casio... nobody would give a fig about it. Okay, in a realistic measure: both shows the time, both are great, one is cheap, you will not cry about it when you scratch it, and nobody wants to rip it off your arm. The other shows the time, but everything else is just the direct opposite of the first one. In an alternative utopia world I would wear a Rolex. In the real one: the Casio.

A temperature sensor . They were pretty useless as to get an accurate reading you had to leave on a surface for like 30 mins. If it’s on your wrist then the reading is all wrong

The beauty of Casio is that there is a Casio for every single person on earth, assuming that you have at least one arm. There is a ton of options for every style, budget and wrist size. They are available in every country and almost anyone can buy one. Rolex on the other hand treats their customers badly, does shady business and puts funny price tags on their products. Well it's not Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet so it's not actually a luxury brand either. Besides, I personally don't like the look of most of Rolex watches anyway. So if i were to buy a luxury watch for a ridiculous amount Rolex is not up there, and for normal purchases it's too costly. For that reason I'm more than happy to buy Casio watches without thinking so much on it. Worse case scenario I can just give it away.

Another fantastic video Gordon! There’s so much sentimentality around watches (particularly Swiss mechanical watches) that it’s easy for objectivity to fly out the window! For telling the time in a specific application there’s few times a Casio isn’t a better or more appropriate tool to do a job. But then as a wise man once said “if you spend more than $10 on a watch, you aren’t buying it to just tell the time” 😂

What a wonderful production ! Well done, that was very enjoyable. I'm all for the Casio too. I would love a Rolex but I can't justify the cost. I love the explorer but have a 5600 instead. I know it wont let me down and can wear anywhere doing anything ... anything ! I have a humble watch collection that makes me happy. I love the fun and economical advantages Casio offer.

re: 7:30 most of my Casio digitals are also WAY better than their stated spec of +/-30sec/month. Honestly, most of them are within 30sec a YEAR. It is a lot easier for normal people to test this now as your phone is basically using atomic time - or you can get it easily online to the second (which is how I know).

I like going with the casio illuminator 200m with a ten - year battery [ dw291-h] looks a little like a small g-shock wristwatch. This watch has a glass lens and protruding chrome buttons.

This is a no-brainer. Casio is light years more innovative and has conquered more wrists than Rolex. Rolex may be more coveted and aspirational, but it's merely an expensive show-off piece. Casio is pure champ!

The sheer number of crowns Casio has snatched & holds from companies that are still considered industry giants, while the coattails Rolex have ridden either went to tatters long ago or belong to relative (albeit high end) bit players, just shows that Casio deserve their God Tier position. When I think Rolex, I think of overly expensive watches for people to flaunt their money, or to, let's say, "compensate" for something else. I don't like Rolex. The watches are just fine, I just don't like the brand and their overinflated prices. Decades ago they stood for high quality for a price most working men would be able to save up. Now It's purely a luxury item. They even limit the supply so that they keep the inflated price. I take a Casio any day.

When I think of Rolex all that comes to mind is rehashing the same old over-hyped, bulky watches since the 1960s. Maybe it is just me (but I am a huge watch fan). Hopefully nowadays their dials and hands don't tarnish the way the old ones did. Casio are not perfect though. Their current offerings annoyingly don't appear to be as accurate as my '82 Marlin was. Thankfully Casio still gives us the option of sensibly sized watches for those who don't feel the need to overcompensate.

These are two very different watches, they don’t compete with each other. As far as time keeping yes obviously the Casio is a million times more accurate and can do more than a Patek Philippe with a few complications on it. Both have their pros & cons, but the Casio has less cons than a Rolex. The con’s The case design… this is 2022 not 1987 The case material… use everyday as intended you can’t polish plastic after dings & scratches. I wear a suit…. you will look goofy wearing a Casio to a board meeting with a suit. The heirloom value…. Will this watch help a loved one after your dead if they need to sell it for money? No. A Rolex can help get a loved one (or you) out of a tough financial situation. Like I said incomparable watches. What you should say…. Everyone needs to own both a Casio and a Rolex.

Advantage Rolex - EMP event such as happened in 1859 when a solar flare burned out telegraph lines and it is not a matter of if this will happen again, but when. A mechanical watch will not be effected, but any quartz watch not properly shielded and 99.9% are not, will simply be fried. The reality is when the next EMP event occurs, our modern world will have far larger issues than digital watches failing. That said, mechanical watches will be what you will want.

Generally speaking if your Casio breaks you throw it out and buy a new one, if your Rolex breaks you fix it and keep wearing it. There are Rolex watches ( and quantity mechanical watches of many brands) that are 100 years old and still being worn and used daily... i seriously doubt you will see (Unfortunately i wont live to see) a 100 year old Casio on a grandchild's wrist. This is the simple difference between plastic digital watches and traditional mechanical watches. For function and accuracy every watch Casio included is obsolete, made so by computers aka Smartwatches.. they can do everything and anything your watch can do plus a million things yours never will... so if you strickly care about function and accuracy get a smartwatch.. if you want something that you will have an emotional connection to and that your childrens children will wear get a good mechanical watch.

@IlluminatingWatches I have a few from the 70s as well however if one of them were to break in the area of something more then a battery change or a corrosion cleaning (batt acid on terminals or maybe a lead) then you will most likely be looking for a replacement module (NOS - good luck with that). And not to split hairs and at the risk of sounding like an asshole I seriously doubt that you have a 50 year old digital watch and certainly not a 50 year old Casio because they didn't make any in 73. The domaint watch in digital format at that time was an led module (like the Hamilton P2) and the reliability of the modules in those watches... well you can find working ones yes at a premium price but generally speaking a broken one is gonna stay broken. The first lcd digital (arguably)was made in late 72 (Seiko 06LC) and released in early 73 which would put it at 50 years, however I personally have never seen one in person. So if you own either of these I can only say that I'm envious of you! All that being said and for my last asshole statement.. 50 years is not 100 years and in fact it's half as long on a product that was not designed to be serviced and maintained so my educated guess for the future is that you are more likely to see a 200 year old Rolex's on people's wrists then 100 year old Casio when history takes us to that point. More likely you will find them in horology museums but not on normal people's wrists. I love all watches, I lived through the 70s and enjoyed wearing my cheap casio through the quartz crisis and my timex calculator watch for years.. I loved my video game watches, my TV remote control watches, and I still wear an f91w to work on the car and various banging around work. Yet the watch that I wear and the one that I care about is the one that my grandmother gave me when I was 8 years old; it was her father's, manual wind mechanical.. had it serviced 2 years ago.. it tells time, that's what it does, accurate to a couple of seconds a day, more then reasonable for my needs and I'm sure that when I'm gone the next generation will be wearing it getting it serviced and looking forward to passing it down to their kids with of course the stories of the people who wore it before. I'm sorry my friend but that is not gonna happen with a g-shock (BTW I broke 2 of them, don't know how but the unbreakable watch broke on me twice, 2 different models lol). No hard feelings, wear what you enjoy!

Also Gruen teletime using a ILIXCO LCD module was before seiko if we’re talking twisted nematic LCD , with dynamic scattering display LCDs coming marginally before this. Check out my history on the evolution of the LCD display. Seiko first 6 digit and first multifunction 👍

I dont like rolex. And i dont like people that like rolex too. But your video is more about dilgital vs analog. Casio watches are fragile. PLASTIC cases are fragile. Plastic parts are designed to fail - disintegrate after some years.The screws can be screwed and unscrewed FOUR times.Then you must replace the whole CASE (it is written in a casio service manual). Their lugs are fragile. You can easily break them or destroy their holes if you want to change straps. Casio has become a ridiculous brand when they stopped to use stainless steel cases for their digitals (and they stopped because they sell them more as single-use toys) A video comparing invicta 8926 with rolex submariner would be more interesting.

Casio still makes digital watches with steel cases. (And some even in Titanium.) For example the square G-Shock B5000. And the A1000.

I used to feel the same way, but some of us are finding the need to step away from our own smartphones because there's that need to disconnect temporarily from a device that can turn addictive. With a Casio you can take it anywhere, and just get the basics.

Simple is like that: likely no thug will rip off your watch with your arm included wearing a cheap Casio. Wearing a Rolex... well, maybe will attract some unwanted attention.

I’m not so pessimistic. There’s been a bit of a surge of interest in casio more recently , and even though the Rolex demand is softening slightly they still can’t make enough of them to satisfy demand. There are aspects of smart watch history that I also find quite interesting (did a video on the digital watch technology tree that covers this topic a bit)

Moj pametni sat spletom okolnosti nije imao par puta konekciju gde nisam imao osnovne podatke; koliko je sati, nego prazan ekran? Nije više bitno, gde neću da razmišljam u tom pravcu gde sam potpuno autonoman sa Casio sat sa baterijom od trajanje od 10 godina gde ću svakako vremenom primetiti kada je potrebno zameniti istrošenu bateriju i dati lufta da je zamenim novom a da pri tome mi ne bude prazan ekran bez sata, gde i kod iskusne sportiste vremenom teže jednostavnošću gde mi je potrebna štoperica i možda alarm kao opciju.
