A talk between Tyler Shields and Ivan Rodrigues about Natural Color solution, Hasselblad medium format and all things Color Science.

HASSELBLAD NATURAL COLOR SOLUTION
NATURAL COLORS
While image colour and tonality are somewhat subjective, the tones displayed in an image are controlled by the following:
Pixel size and sensitivity (Dynamic range)
Number of bits per colour channel in the A/D conversion process
Colour profile applied to the resulting image data
The Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS) was developed for serious users who demand the utmost colour accuracy. This system delivers the best possible natural colours from the selected chip without having to select from multiple presets. The HNCS delivers smoother tonal transitions and a more analogue film-like image quality straight out of the camera, thanks to its 16 bit colour depth, compared to the majority of smaller DSLR sensors.
Solutions where you have to sacrifice some colours in order to get others right are unacceptable.
Correct colours need to be in every shot, regardless of subject.
A simplified colour temperature control that ensures the correct rendition of colours is important.
A one-profile solution is ideal in order to keep colour management simple.

I felt that if I was going to be in the right place, at the right time, I’d also want the right camera. This led me immediately to the H6D-100c. The precision and detail in the shots is so satisfying and it just brings me great joy to use this camera, every time I pick it up.

Great video guys and Tyler your work is just beautiful, truly beautiful ideas you have... I used to shoot hasselblad for nearly 20 yrs but in all honesty I now shoot the Fujifilm GFX100, the colour in this thing is just awesome, even compared to the hasty 100.....Tyler you’ll appreciate this from a film perspective, different film different profile etc, Fujifilm include their original film stock profiles as simulations within their bodies, so basically choose your own profile.... the camera is light years ahead of hasselblad in terms of focus, speed and is packed full of features including 5 stop ‘In body Image Stabilisation. The best part is that it’s less than $10k for its 102mp GFX system. And they now included a pixel shift firmware update giving you a 400mp functionality ‘for free’.... and remember all the hassy HC lenses were made by Fujifilm too.... you can get the check adaptor for the gfx to take the he lenses too... As a Fashion & Beauty photographer the GFX system has been awesome, and that comes from a seasoned hassy shooter for so many years....this is not to dis Hasselblad, but more to say if you haven’t tried the Fujifilm gfx100, just go get it in your hands and try it and if you can use Fujifilm’s own GF glass..... would love to see you do a video after shooting with it. ;) happy shooting guys. :)

Little note, Hasselblad claims to have 16-bit, and the files are 16-bit, but there is a big BUT, if you open the RAW-file in a RAW analyzer, only 1 of every 4 channels of color is used, so actually the files are only 14-bit files in a 16-bit container. This has to do with the processors that could make a smaller bit depth when they got to 14. Maybe nerdy stuff, but important to keep in mind! It is still a great camera and with the Phocus software a great camera! But Marketing tries to make it better then it actually is.

@@ialmeida2 I have enjoyed your work and this was a great summary, far better than any marketing material or webinars I have seen from any manufacturer. Maybe for your next chat tell us more about lenses, e.g. what makes expensive lenses (Hasselblad, Carl Zeiss Superachromatic, PhaseOne Schnider, etc) so different/special, how to understand an MTF chart, what are some of your favorite lenses, and why (across formats, and mediums).

I understand exactly what you are saying. I grew up shooting 6x4 b&w sheet film in my father's portrait studio back in the 60's. The cost and availability of film became a problem so we began using 120 roll film. We were shooting 6x7s on Mamiyas, 127mm lens. Then I got myself a 500 CM and was working with an 80 mm lens. I literally had to relearn portraiture and it was not satisfying compared to my old work. I have been hurting for the effect of the old Cooke Anstigmat Portrait lens for at least 40 to 50 years. Now I am starting a project photographing Notables and Tribal leaders and am going to shoot on 8x10, Symmar 360. Just to get the roundness in faces and the shallow d/f like we've seen in the old portraits of Indian Nawabs around the turn of the century. I could never afford to pay for an X1D,

Nice Video guys thanks! One thing I would like to mention is that , you can have the best colour profiles using film and medium format hasselblad. But when you pull them onto your computer your screen colour profiles are way way off. I have tried calibrating mine for print but it is always a bit off and cost me re printing until its right. Any advice regarding this dilemma?

I mean a basic tractor in 1901 was a plow with a cow. Cost maybe $2000 today A budget starter tractor today costs $300,000... Are Hasselblad's expensive? Yes, because its literally peak technology. If you wanted a "cheap" medium format entry you can buy a 500C/M for $800. But people don't see film cameras for their value, only (currently) for their Hollywood notoriety. Like Harry Potter literally doubled the price of the Argus C3. And a Contax T3 almost costs more than *2* Hasselblad 500C's Is a Contax T3 worth 3 RB67's/2 Hasselblad 500C/M's / The price of a brand new 503CW? No. But because you see celebs using them its pop culture inflated. So that's agreeable. However, again aside from those cases, film cameras are way, way cheaper than they realistically have any right to be.

Medium format compression is a myth. Compression comes from field of view, not focal length. If the field of view is the same, compression is the same. Now, there is indeed a depth of field difference (related to the focus falloff), but it comes from the larger physical diameter of the entrance pupil (the longer the focal length, the larger the diameter in a given f-stop), and from the fact that the bigger the sensor, the more magnified is the image projected onto it. But that compression thing means nothing; the lenses' optical design is much more relevant to the resulting image than the theoretical relation between focal length and field of view.

Why should you not use medium format? I am not afford! A ND filter is much more cheap No, the cameras todays are 14 bits and some is already 16bits. Anyway depending where you will see or print it makes no difference. The profile is just and option but in raw you can change everything. You can make perfect photos with full frame cameras. Just look at the great photograpers using it. Annie, Sebastiao Salgado and so on. You dont need a lot of photoshop to correct colors. Besides, a lot mixture abaout medium format and film. You have all types in film and digital. The grain of film due to 3D in the silver complexes in the paper is diferent of digital but you have both for medium and full frame cameras
