Note: As of the latest nightly builds for 0.49, OpenMW *does* have support for complex lua mods and shader support. The vast majority of mods most people will want to use now have a version for OpenMW or another modder has recreated the same concept with a different implementation. There are, of course, notable exceptions. Like Ashfall.

The problem is that additional effort is required to make it compatible with mods that add new food items and the like (such as Tamriel Rebuilt.) Edit: There is a new simple needs mod called Basic Needs for OpenMW which adds basic exhaustion, food, and thirst mechanics. It requires the development build of OpenMW though.

After spending a ridiculous amount of time with open mw trying to set it up and get it to run well i have come to the conclusion you are better off using the morrowind graphics and soudns overhaul. Its simple it installs, it works and looks better than this, at least it has proper groundcover support and does not destroy perfomance due to groudncover or the idiotic water shaders and draw distance and it has much better mods in it that actually work unlike open mw and you dont have to use open mw's awful content installation ui and you get to play at double the fps , sure it crashes but what is the point of not crashing when the game goes from over 100 fps to 20 fps constantly? Open mw sucks, its a buggy broken unfinished engine incompatible with anything and most people dont use it for that reason.

I was debating this for weeks now, since I've only ever truly played Morrowind once (main quest + lots of side stuff) long ago, and I LOVE modding my games. The thing that convinced me the most (in your video, that is) is the distant land & landmass mod support. Quite honestly, MGE-XE was extremely laggy and jittery even on vvanderfell, and having to jump through hoops to make distant land work, only to have it run at 20 fps on my modern rig was... underwhelming. But back then I simply sighed and went with it, because the community told me that OpenMW was "crappy and lacked features". There's also the fact that it has a VR branch and a Multiplayer branch! You can now co-op with someone in Morrowind (or blame them for all your crimes). For me, OpenMW is the best way to play for many reasons, but crashes are one of the biggest issue. With all the fixes and external programs, I still had to save often and not really enjoy the game because I had no idea when Oldwind would crash. It tore me out of the game and made enjoying it more difficult. With OpenMW I had get used to the fact that it wouldn't crash. Never had it crash once, and I've been using it for years. I have no reason not to use it! Great video and I'm glad someone is talking about OpenMW! Perhaps next it would be good to show off the differences between MGE XE and OpenMW. One major flaw no one talks about is the fact that your shadow supercedes the terrain shadows in the game, which can be a bit jarring. OpenMW doesn't suffer from such a bug. There's the lighting as you mentioned as well, and the reflections on water are far better on OpenMW than they are in Oldwind with MGE XE.

MWSE-Lua mods are too good to pass up for me. Extra performance is meaningless to me if I'm just not having fun with the actual gameplay mechanics. And lua mods have spoiled the shit out of me. OpenMW is definitely the future, and it's getting closer to being the decisive place to play Morrowind. But it's not there yet.
@rosenrot68713 жыл бұрын
This is my exact sentiment right now. Old Morrowind might have it's flaws but so many gameplay and QoL mods that require MWSE makes it hard to pass up on. Also I've found running only a few mods in OpenMW with the distant terrain set to the same cells that I would have in MGE XE (5) yields pretty bad performance. But maybe this new method they've implemented addressed that. Either way, OpenMW isn't the most forgiving on my old Gigabyte 980. Also interesting when Mr. Moonshine pointed out his experience with Skyrim LE vs SE. I've found both games to have stability issues, with crashes being the result of mod conflicts (which will happen on either when having a heavy modded build). Also Skyrim Special Edition ENBs still pale in comparison to how Oldrim ones look, even 5 years later and they still are missing features from the ENB binaries of Oldrim.

It's not so much the lack of Lua support (Lua scripting is being introduced in 0.48+), it's lack of a common API between OpenMW and MWSE, meaning the scripts for one cannot be used with the other. As far as I can tell, there are no convergence plans at this time.

Well, I'd certainly encourage people to use OpenMW. For me, the fact it has a Linux-native version matters as I often use Linux, but it is equally usable for Windows users, and far, far more stable. However, the MWSE incompatibility is a pain, because a lot of very cool mods depend on it. It's not that "Oldwind" is better, just that the unavailability of these mods is frustrating. The other annoyance is that sitting NPCs are a major problem. I won't go into the technical details because they're discussed in the OpenMW development community, but in effect sitting NPCs need to be individually patched to work with OpenMW, putting the onus on the mod authors to make their mods compatible. Most won't, because they either don't use OpenMW or don't have the time to support two separate versions of the same mod. So OpenMW is fantastic, but not quite a fully-fledged replacement yet. Users will experience big benefits but will need to compromise too. Depending on what's important to you, your mileage may vary.

I subscribed because you are informative, to the point, you appreciate the simplicity of OpenMW, and the CCCP joke was hilarious. Great job!

As soon as OpenMW gets proper lua support and enough compatible mods to make it worth switching then I will. Until then it's still inferior to regular morrowind if you want to use a lot of the best mods. Im definitely hyped for a full release version though. Also it's worth noting that Ashfall will never be compatible with OpenMW without a complete remake.

OpenMW is awesome, the ability to play Morrowind natively on other operating systems, even FreeBSD, would have been impossible without this project, with the original Morrowind I had crashes shortly after visiting certain areas, which in OpenMW doesn't happen, support for MWSE and other scripts is missing tho TES (and Fallout games) are known to have many stability issues, and bugs, hopefully at some point there will be an OpenOblivion and an OpenSkyrim, and of course an OpenFallout, Fallout 3 would benefit the most from this, that game is unplayable on modern PCs because CTD hell

I sat and fiddled with various mods for like three days on Oldwind, before I decided to give OpenMW a try... I was stunned to find that all of the mods I had installed worked completely fine and required no further work from me. Oldwind has a built-in failstop that shuts the game down if anything goes wrong. OpenMW on the other hand just keeps running and works around the errors instead. For example, if you load two objects inside one another, Oldwind would just crash, where OpenMW shows you both objects glitched inside one another.

Nice video, even though I didn't need convincing. Old Morrowind was a chore to play because of the crashes. With OpenMW I never had any crashes and it ran smooth as butter indeed.

If OpenMW continues improving at this rate, Bethesda should at some point package this engine with Morrowind on Steam and have Steam prompt the user to choose between the old engine and OpenMW upon launching the game. This way we can enjoy OpenMW as well as all the Steam features associated with the original

Thanks for making this video, it's definitely shone some light on the OpenMW project for me. I mostly want to fix Morrowind's resolution as the Regedit fix isn't working for me, but the added features of OpenMW will definitely be welcome ones. I'm gonna give it a go now & see what I think.

I just got my mildly modded morrowind installed (basically vanilla graphics with Tamriel rebuilt, project Tamriel + quality of life stuff) in openmw, and it is so much better than my install in the original engine. Load times are eons faster, and my laptop doesn’t commit frame-rate suicide in the more densely populated Tamriel-rebuilt zones. Way more of a playable experience

Although I also have some problems with gameplay (as someone who cought on to Elder Scrolls around Oblivion and has that as the favourite from the series), my biggest problem with Morrowind was definitely the crashing. I even had one of the temples be a consistent crash, so I literally couldn't enter a certain building, making me doubt whether I can even finish the game. This is making me reconsider and maybe try again.
@MrOpenMW3 жыл бұрын
Just give it a try. Unlike the original engine, a crash is considered a severe bug in OpenMW.

As a Debian user, OpenMW is the only real option I have and honestly, I don't miss anything from the old disc version I used when I tried it out way back when, except maybe the creation kit thing, but I'm not much of a mod guy in RPGs anyway, so it's not a huge loss. Instead I gain a lot with all the QoL features and really nice settings it just gives me by default, not to mention the ease of installation, being able to just type in a single command in my terminal. It's just fantastic and I don't see a single reason why you would not use it tbh.

I agree that OpenMW is the way to go. However, I've been using Oldwind and Oldrim for years and never had all these crash problems and performance issues mentioned in the video. Then again, I didn't install 400 mods. I think 30-50 is my limit for mods. Even if I could install more mods, I can't be bothered because at some point you just need to play the game. I don't have a current install, but if I go to play Morrowind again I will definitely be using OpenMW.
@hmate72 жыл бұрын
The problem is that most mod creators don't actualy play the game they just like modding it (which is a running 'joke' among them too) so consequently they dont give a hoot about stability or playability what they care about are "cool features that they can implement" or at least features that look good on paper or in a showcase video... Which is fine realy, on an individual level. They should do what they like, and to be fair what they do are sometimes seriously amasing... its just ... well...
@MizterMoonshine2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is definitely something I've noticed myself. It's not just modders. People who make games don't seem to play them.

I played through the entire base-game on the 0.45 version with no crashes and only one issue (low performance in one dungeon). Highly recommend it over Oldwind.

What do you do to improve fps in towns with lots of people like Balmora? Looking into town centres drops fps super hard, knocking down shadow distance or actor processing range seems to be all I can do about it.
