My wife got me an M82A1 with her bonus several years ago. Since then I’ve put maybe 800 rounds through mine… the vast majority of that 800 rounds was delinked machine gun ammo. At 100 yards it’s a solid 2 moa gun. I’ve shot at 250, 500, 800 and 1000 yards and it maintains 2-3moa. I just swapped out the Leupold MK6 3-18 to and much cheaper Arken sh4. So far it’s been fine. You are 110% right on your points in this video… this gun is 100% 2nd cool and borderline unusable for most. Most ranges won’t let you shoot 50. Ammo is pricey. The muzzle blast is so wicked you can only shoot a few shots before you are concussed. The gun is heavy AF. Yep… but it is cool. Mine serves as a party trick these days, that said, I’d never sell it. In a real world scenario where the shtf I’m taking my scar 20 or 17 or DDMK12. Those guns are much more practical.

9:16 it's interesting that you came to the conclusion that it seems like a large .30-06. When Browning designed the M2 he took his m1919 (chambered in .30-06) and just upscaled everything, including the cartridge. The .50 BMG is quite literally an upscaled .30-06.

Good video and spot-on evaluation. I've an M95 I purchased back in 08. I knew if I didn't get one then I never would. Nutn is right, I've shot it all of four times in the last fifteen years, less than 100rnds collectively between six people. I went for the 95 because of size and weight constraints. At 48" long(w/ 32" barrel) It fits in a regular drag bag and is 26lbs. with optic and mag. I store it off-site in a private vault and haven't looked at it in years. It is peace of mind and a long term investment. Topped it with a Leupold mk4 4.5-14x50 but haven't sprung(yet) for the firing solution Barrett offers. I've also several hundred rounds I will likely never shoot. Even with double muffs 6-8 rounds is about all anyone can manage before they feel like they have a concussion and that's simply from the muzzle blast not the recoil. My biggest problem is finding a place that will allow me to use it as well as not draw attention. Still glad I have it though.

I was very close to getting one over two decades ago, but due to total cost and weight involved I opted to go with the 338 LAPUA system instead being a much lighter and cheaper system with near similar flight ballistics of a BMG. It's also cheaper to hand load and doesn't require a separate over sized press either. Never regretted going the 338 LAPUA rout.

Same. Love the 338.

Now with heavy 300 rounds like the 230 gainers up to even 250 grain's the 300 win mag and 300 prc are beasts too. The 300 win mag with 230 grain bullets is literally better ballistics and energy than 338 lapua using 250 gainers (the only way 338 lapua can use a magzine). Unless they start making longer 338 magazines you can't use 300 grain 338 bullets unless you want to single load. So for me today it looks like the 300 win mag or 300 prc are best for regular use. 50 bmg is for wrecking vehicles lol. A different league
@Oldhogleg Жыл бұрын
@@ryaniam22 There's an error in your assessment regarding 300gr bullets in 338 LAPUA. 300gr bullet in 338 LAPUA have been fitting in magazines just fine for decades. I've been using 300gr my self for decades. Reminds me of the common misnomer that 260REM can't be loaded with high BC 150gr bullets and fit in the magazine when I've been doing that myself for years as well.
@ryaniam22 Жыл бұрын
For real? I don't actually own one but had heard multiple times that they don't fit in Sami spec mags especially the military 338 lapua rifles as the 338 was designed for the 250 gainers originally. Hope your right. I really want myself a trg but don't see the point if a 300 win mag can match or beat it ballistically.
@Oldhogleg Жыл бұрын
@@ryaniam22 Wikipedia has a picture of the 338 LAPUA 250gr and a 300gr side by side if you want to see for yourself. You can easily look up the load data as well for overall length and so on. There's no mystery, the specifications and dimensions information is out there, including SAMMI specs if you're willing to invest a couple of minutes doing an internet search instead of relying on second hand hearsay on forums where every numbnut is an expert. Oops miss read the dark letters on the Wikipedia picture, it's an SMK. But you still can see from the pic the LAPUA case mouth doesn't go past the 300gr bullet ogive. If you do a NOSLER 338 LAPUA load data internet search, you'll planely see both bullets (250gr & 300gr) are seated to the exact same maximum overall cartage length of 3.681 inches.

I ordered a big kahuna bolt action 50 cal upper that fits on an ar-15 lower. From the few video's that are available and the reviews I've read, the people who have it are very happy with it and it's an inexpensive way to get started with the 50 bmg. After an almost 4 month wait (ordered it on Dec18th) It will arrive at the FFL on 15 Apr. The cost for the upper was $1995 and they had free shipping during the month of Dec if you bought it then. I have been buying some ammo along the way and the cheapest I got it for was a little over $5 a round that's including taxes and shipping (660gr ball ammo) and a few boxes cost more than that. I have a little over 200 rounds now. I have the lower all set up and a scope waiting to install. I doubt I'll ever buy any of the specialty rounds, where I shoot, the longest range will be about 300 yards. This was purely a want and not a need unless a national shtf scenario happens. With the price of the barrett, I can have the upper, lower, scope, mount and about 1000 rounds of ammo and still have money left over to buy more ammo. Once again, this is purely a want, toy, fun way to hurt the shoulder purchase.

I think the analysis was spot on. I wanted a Barrett until I shot one in my unit. Good: I had previously never shot past 300m, and I was able to easily put rounds on target at 1,200m. Bad: all the things you said, SAWC, and blast, etc. The recoil was about like a 12 Guage with turkey loads, but even with double ears, after a full day at the range, I had a headache and felt like garbage. Lugging that thing to and from the range also sucks. Now an M2, I'll happily run one of those all day and night! As always, great content!

I worked for desert tech during the company’s infancy. They gave me an HTI in .50 BMG when I left. as far as shooting it, it’s really not expensive at all. Ball ammo is still under 3 bucks a round which was cheaper than 6.5 creedmoor was during the pandemic. .50 BMG is probably the only round that hasn’t increased in price for the last 4 years. Also, the Russian 12.7x108 is not more powerful than the American 12.7x99. Russian powders are not as well engineered as American gunpowder. hence the large muzzle flash from the dshk or the kord or literally any Russian ammunition/ gun combination in existence 😂

I've shot quite a bit of 50 bmg from a barret as well as a ma duece. I find the cartridge to be severely lacking in the accuracy department when using the Barrett. The Barrett is a 4 moa rifle according to the specs. The ARMY uses a mark 4 scope with quarter minute adjustments. I've heard stories about how the m107 came to fruition and it just makes me not like it even more. On the other hand, the m2 browning is freaking amazing. I have thousands and thousands of rounds through both platforms.

Husband here. Barret M107A1 .50 is wonderful. So are others. A .50 is a different .....something. You dont need hundreds/thousands of yards to have fun with it. You dont need lots of ammo to have fun. I purchased a .22 pellet pistol with the same reasoning. The purchase brought me a happy face. Owning a 50, is a whole different experience. Same thing with a 22 pellet pistol. A .50 seems to draw attention and smiles. Sheeesh a .22 pellot pistol also.....without the ground shaking stuff. Do it for your own entertainment.

Easily hit a 24” square target at 1,875 yards, and vaporized a pumpkin at 100yards. I think seeing the massive “splash” the 50 makes at distance is what’s magical about it, a quick hold over and your on. Smaller calibers I have a hard time seeing at 1,000 yards.

This is a fantastic review. As someone with an M107A1. Everything he said is true. One thing I'll add. If you add a can to this build you're also adding like 8 or 9 lbs to it. Ammo is expensive. Ranges aren't long enough. Most ranges don't let me shoot .50 bmg because it damages their targets. I don't get to practice often. It in fact does just sit in the safe all the time. Its also heavy like he said. I took it hunting once. I wasnt ready for just how heavy it was in addition to other gear. Every single thing in this video is spot on. The power is also well stated. It's not the end all be all. But it is a force to be reckoned with. And lastly. I think of mine, not as a offensive tool but a defensive tool. Having it there for a medium-long range reminder that you messed with the wrong person. And mostly as a vehicle stopper. In a real use situation. Vehicles are a great way to move troops/gear quickly and safely longer distances. If you are defending a location, a vehicle can cover 1000 yards in 30 seconds. On foot is 15 minutes. And you're exposed. The .50 can remove the vehicle from the equation and make it much harder to move troops to your location without exposing themselves.

It’s definitely way too expensive for me. A little off topic, but I was saving up for a while to purchase a new gun. Went to the CMP store and bought a service grade M1 Garand two weekends ago. Never owned or shot one before, always wanted one. They had a lot more of a selection in the store, they didn’t have a service grade on their website. It cost me $900 for a service grade Springfield Armory, which took me a little while to save up for. I’m happy with it, but anything 50 bmg would definitely be out of my budget.
