Story time: my service dog in training passed last Christmas. This is th first time I watched a service dog video for a while!!!! He was a great Pyrenees pit bull mix and he was self trained by Moi! So people keep asking how a dog is supposed to help people passing out or do things that machines can do and calling people Karen’s for not letting them pet the dogs. Service dogs can smell differences in the heart rate and other things. When someone is about to pass out their heart rate is prob high. The doggies sniffs this and do dpt or deep pressure therapy to lower the heart rate like a weighted blanket. A machine isn’t alway practical or a good form of treatment. You can’t pet them because they can miss an alert and the handler can have a serious episode and may need to be hospitalized which is very expensive. When people say you can’t pet the dog it’s because they are disabled and their service dog (which is not classified as a pet but medical equipment because it helps someone with their disability) is working and you can cause them to miss an alert resulting in a medical episode. Keep in mind there are many types of services service dog can provide. They can help the blind, those who are hearing impaired, people with pots, and people with ptsd. These are just some of the disabilities that people may need a service dog for.

It is not illegal to pet a service dog if the handler directs and allows it. Some psychiatric service dogs help handlers with ptsd and social anxiety begin to trust people again. I would not even look or talk to another person until I trained my dog that only after directed he could greet a person. I can now shake a hand, have a conversation and my dog is my ambassador directed by me

I never understand people obsession with petting others dogs. I love dogs and when I see one that interest me I ask the owner about the dog admire it and keep it moving. If you pet them, they'll get confused and might go "dog mode" instead of "work mode", and fail at their job. I dont even let her greet other dog unless I know them personally. Not every dog is good with strangers, kids. The dog might be reactive, shy, nervous or aggressive. Some could be youg dogs in training and they need to learn to focus on their handler. What if your dog doesnt want a stranger petting them? Do you force the interaction?

It is illegal to interfere with a service dogs job in most states. Only 5 out of 50 have no laws against it. Say your working and some random person comes up and starts petting you. Are you going to keep doing what your doing or turn and focus on them? Any sane person would turn and focus on whoever is petting them. Its the same with service dogs. They are dogs not robots and while those situations shouldn't make the dog uncomfortable it can however distract the dog from its task at hand. Its important for these dogs to stay completely focused on their handler. Not to mention the dog could be in training and your kid running up and petting without permission can set the dog back in its training. Imagine if a kid ran up to a wheelchair and started playing with it because it "isnt going to effect their job" Its also not just about the service dog its about respect, consent, and safety. Service dogs are not for your children's entertainment and your child should be taught to ask first and then accept no for an answer. Allowing children to run up to random dogs is just down right dangerous. They are DOGS with TEETH that you do not know! It only takes one time for a kid to run up to the wrong dog.

I had a little toddler run up to my German shepherd while at a coffee shop, thankfully shes very good with little kids and was very gentle with her. I could see the mom was nervous and tried to stop her kid before she could reach my dog, but i quickly assured her that it was all good. We ended up having a conversation and she was worried she was a service and didn't want too interfere if she was working.

People should do this when any handler is training any dog service or not cause it’s a distraction from training I would know everybody wants to pet my dog and I’m trying to train him he barks at other dogs which I really don’t like it’s very excessive and he lunges on the leash. So I got me a head harness and he broke all his collars off cause he strong he’s smart. He can open doors surprised he hasn’t got into the fridge yet! He’s still a pup so we still have time for service dog training which is what I got him for anxiety and ptsd are hard to deal with and they just hit fast and hard my anxiety went through the roof Memorial Day and I was barely able to breathe so training coming soon! Got to get new equipment payday

I’ve been diagnosed with an anxiety Disorder and I was wondering if I could make my dog a service dog for my disorder, she helps me when I’m in a panic attack and I want to be able to bring her with me because unfortunately a lot of places don’t accept regular pets. So registration is fake and I you bring her somewhere it can distract real service animals if she barks or growls. If you feel comforted by her presence than that's called an emotional support animal and they don't have public rights. But if like you said she helps you with panic attacks you can talk to your doctor and yuou can either train her yourself or you can get professional help with training. A service animal can tell you before you have a panic attack addo something called DPT (deep pressure therapy). During a panic attack a service animal can also bring you water or fetch medication. Again please don't bring your untrained pet into non pet friendly places even if she is in a carrier. If you have any other questions let me know!
