Just in case people are thinking why does spitting get such extreme measures. It's not just due to disrespect; it's the chance of them getting all kinds of horrible conditions/illnesses. You have no idea what they have & if it goes in their eyes/mouth; could give them STI/STDs, pink eye & all kinds of horrible diseases. Since i can see where the confusion comes from. So. If you have to force someone into something you are using force. Not all uses of forces are bad. People who endanger others (say violent criminals) often subdue by force. Other like shoplifters. Can be subdue by words. And an Arrest can be considered an act of force. Even if they were no violence involved. Because they need to make sure that the person is incapable of escape or endanger other. Is force used to prevent violence if that makes sense? There's a reason that police are paid 20% more than the average Joe's salary (in my state, anyway. This is based on average income for the entire state vs average salary for cops in the same state)...of course they shouldn't *have to* put up with things like getting spit on, but it's pretty standard for that line of work, ya know? Which is why they're paid $10 more per hour than most people 🤷🏻‍♀️. If you work in an office, a hospital, a school, or even a grocery store and a client/patient/customer spits on you and you punch them in the face in retaliation, you can absolutely expect to be fired. Because there are other, better ways to handle that. Imo, police should be held to a *higher* standard than regular shmegular people working in an office or grocery store...so I don't feel even a little bit bad that lil homie got canned over the incident. He SHOULD have.

Although i do understand that cops do need to follow legal procedures to not ruin the station's reputation and such, the police officer should have been given a suspension and not a permanent expel, I mean, she spat directly in his face, and if that is classified as battery then the cop should defend himself. Exactly. I’ve seen videos where an officer hit a woman’s face but she was actively spitting and it was in an attempt to block/divert the spit. They weren’t disciplined bc it wasn’t done out of anger, the person wasn’t restrained and procedures were followed. Maranto on the other hands was an absolute reaction out of anger. I get the instinct to do it, but as an officer he can NOT get away with that and I’m glad the dept didn’t excuse it or give him a slap on the wrist.

I know spitting can be way more dangerous than it may seem, but for a police officer to hit someone who is not only restrained, but clearly having some kind of medical issue or mental breakdown? There was a solution there that didn’t involve violence: the spit hood. They could’ve just put that on her immediately instead of hitting her. Punching a restrained person isn’t self defense, it doesn’t accomplish anything other than taking out anger onto someone. That’s why the spit hood exists, for self-defense! I know police officers are human too, I know humans will react with emotions, but a police officer has the power to end or ruin someone’s life. It’s their duty to react with patience, not violence, even in the most extreme circumstances.

Well, the first woman is clearly unwell, probably drunk, and quite possibly having a mental health crisis, and she is provocative and insulting and offensive... but she's in handcuffs and clearly poses no serious physical threat to the safety of the coppers restraining her, so punching her in the face in anger and retaliation for her spitting on him is not just an over-reaction but a criminal assault on someone the copper has a duty of care towards. Perhaps the woman's provocative behaviour and the spitting might be seen as mitigating factors, but this officer is supposed to be trained and capable of handling stressful situations like this without resorting to unjustified violence. I saw the whole video and it was an illegal arrest, they forced her when all she wanted is to walk home but they decided "walking" wasn't an option, this officer slaped her wrongfully and was (is) under investigation i think. People have the right to walk the street without having the police asking us for our destination and judging us capable of walking or not.
