I like the indestructible shoes when working around construction sites, they have breathable running shoe that I bought that have a steel sole plate and a steel toe. .. but if I'm not at a construction site I usually wear sandals because I hate wearing socks because my feet sweat and sandals are more comfortable than sweaty socks. I wish I could stop foot sweat because wet socks are unbearable.

My daughter had a pair of boots on last summer and was walking around our home with our neighbor. Somewhere around our back deck, her foot found an upright rusty nail. It pierced the boot and still went into her foot. Sometimes even with boots you still get into trouble, unfortunately. Ironically, half of the time she would walk barefoot outside and I had been telling her to use shoes to protect her feet. Go figure. LOL

@@thatsusguy1 It has been my experience that the only way to prevent nail penatration is by wearing safety steal sole boots. Anything less only gives a false sense of security. Being barefoot you are naturaly much more careful of where you step and if you do happen to step on a nail you will feel it immediately and readjust. If the nail is on the tough parts of your sole (only barefooters have those) nothing will happen but if it happens to contact soft tissue you will get a shallow puncture or scratch. with shoes on you will not feel the nail and keep putting pressure on until you have totally committed your step and the nail pierces the sole of the shoe. That force and momentum will give you no chance to readjust when you finally feel the nail and it will penatrate fully into your foot
@thatsusguy1
@thatsusguy1 Жыл бұрын
@@dancan6622 Just because your barefoot doesn't mean you will have total awareness of where you are and you are still very likely to commit all of your body weight down onto a nail. Also the callus of your feet are nowhere near strong enough to protect you from nails. Standard shoes do provide protection as they can stop nails from going in as far or block nails from going in all together.

Vibram Five Fingers is my choice. No stories for me, but hubby who does not share the same enthusiasm for minimalist shoes and wears Hokas with the huge heel and thick sole. Running in those Hokas during a window replacement with rain pouring down, summer weather in Florida, around to the inside got a roofing nail in his foot. Even with the thick sole nail still pierced the skin. He pulled it out and kept going.

@@Demon09-_- its actually even better to step on it barefoot is my opinion. Your nerves will sense the nail much quicker compared to a dumb foot encased in rubber that wont feel it until its already past the boot sole and already embedded within your shoe. I dont think nails embedd themselves inside a persons barefoot at a normal walking pace. Our nerves are too quick and we would recoil in pain.

Wow, the thing about laughing from pain reminded me of the time I was in an emergency room with a kidney stone. I was groaning and then laughing. The nurse said “I wish everyone could deal with pain that way!” I told her I wasn’t being positive, it’s just that my brain didn’t know how to react any more. With barefoot sandals, my feet do get sore after a while. When I take them off and still walk on cement, the pain goes away immediately. I’m not sure why.

As a white child (counter to your generalization), we were never allowed to wear shoes in the house. I raised my sons the same way. I also have a very difficult time with an odd shoe size, so I went barefoot whenever I could. Even my teachers turned a blind eye to my bare feet. I still go barefoot whenever I can, inside and out. I have been lucky enough to never have injured my feet in a way like you describe. Although I think I did drop an X-acto knife that landed on a foot (they always land tip first) and once drove my foot into something sharp while sitting on the floor assembling furniture. My one-and-only pair of barefoot style of shoe I use strictly when the ground is too hot or too cold, and never indoors.

I'm used to be barefoot when making things at home, and I developped some habits, one of these being : "keep the business end of the tools close to the wall as possible." In particular the bit you left in the driller. This way if you accidentaly hit the saw with your pinky toes, it's likely to be the handle or the back of the blade in the worst case (or the main body of the tool in the case of the corddrill).

Well, I was not wearing sandals 🩴. But I was running gingerly barefoot on the beach, where the water meets the sand. So my feet would be cool and the sand is firm. All of a sudden I came to a complete agonising stop ✋🏻. I looked down and a huge construction 🚧 nail was sticking out through the middle of my foot. And I was stuck there. Upon closer observation (after nearly passing out) I realized there was a large wooden board that had become covered over with sand by the waves. So was invisible. And a giant nail was sticking out of it, just waiting for my foot to make rendezvous. Hubby helped me get my foot free. Then E.R. and tetanus shot 💉 No permanent damage 🤸🏼

This is exactly the type of insane thing that people will do at home. If you were at work, you would never engage in a carpentry project without proper footwear and eye protection at the very least. But at home? At a friend's house? People don't take even the most minimal care. Part of my work in the occupational health and safety area and after seeing what I've seen, including situations that resulted in amputations, broken bones, one electrocution and more than one workplace fatalities, I can tell you there are good reasons for safety equipment. And there are never any good reasons to ignore basic safety equipment and procedures. Speaking for myself, I wear proper safety shoes, thick soles, steel shank and steel toes whenever I do anything like the project described. I also wear safety glasses whenever I use a hammer and certainly whenever I use power tools. I have various dust and mist masks as well that see lots of use. I don't get on a ladder to work at height without a fall arrest system. If you ask me why I would tell you that you don't want to know. Consider yourself not just lucky, but consider that the universe has sent you a message. Wear proper safety equipment.

There was another young guy who would climb like a monkey up to tall shelves when all the order pickers were taken just to be faster.

I walk dogs for a living and wear Vibram five finger shoes for the trails, but I thought I would wear my barefoot sandals for the drive back to town, and dropping the dogs at their homes. Not a good plan when a 120 pound dog steps on your foot and digs their nails into your skin. I'm usually lucky around animals. I could go out in the morning and feed my horses in bare feet, and used my Vibrams for riding without any mishaps, but I did break a metatarsal while picking manure in clogs, once.

.... I completely get this. I believe as we grow older our feet change... I used to always go barefoot inside my house , and it wasn't a requirement to take your shoes off.. but I usually did I like to wear socks even if I was not barefoot.... but I've noticed as I've gotten older I cannot do that, the flooring is too hard on me and I have to have on a good pair of shoes in the home because my feet just aren't comfortable without shoes... I need some kind of support on my feet, and for my legs. I also suffered a piriformis injury sometime back and it still flares up and if I am without support on my feet I can feel that and it is not comfortable. Even though I do the stretching and the exercises to help it. So I think people that criticize others for wearing shoes in the house they might not know that there's a reason for people doing that I don't expect people to take their shoes off in my house yes I have a doormat I have a rug at the entryway if you want to take your shoes off ,great. ... if not , I don't care.

OK this isn't about barefoot sandals but about something in the neighborhood. Here we go, I love the cheapie flip flops. Heck, they are almost barefoot because they allow my foot to flex as needed. The key to the deadly is the thin straps. The more expensive flip flops with the (usually) thicker soles and (this is the key wider "ribbon" straps do not flex away from your foot in the same way. What happens is that you "can" land so that the sole bends away from your foot and twists your ankle and you fall. Like down in the direction of gravity. I have not yet fallen because of tai chi (Thanks Cheng Man-ch'ing and the apprentices and teachers who followed you.) but it came close enough (more than once) to signal the danger. I had a friend who fell to his death off a ladder and he loved the little flip-flops that I love. It hurts too much to speculate us forearmed. Thanks for reading this.

I ran into the same problem when wearing some lightweight (Keen) hiking shoes. The nail was plenty long enough to penetrate the shoe, and it was rusty. I hadn't had a tetanus shot for quite a while, so I decided to go to the hospital after reading some horror stories on the web about infections from nail punctures. The doctor looked at it, then, and I'm not joking, put a kid's style pokemon bandage on it and told me a I'm good to go. I think they charged me $800 because it was an emergency room visit. So yeah, if you are working around metal fasteners (screws and nails especially), wear shoes with some puncture protection.

Good point and valid, but there’s risk in anything. I wear barefoot sandals a lot and am extra aware and careful of potential dangers. Some are thicker than others some are tougher than others. I know of people that run 100 mile trail ultramarathons in them too. To be they’re worth the risk but I wear shoes / work boots as well depending on what situation I’m in. Overall I’d much rather wear them than shoes wherever possible. Currently use the Luna Mono (11mm of rubber) which are great but will be getting their thicker models from now on.

Tetanus is a total sham. Get this: the reporting guidelines tell doctors to only report cases as "tetanus" if the patient says they aren't tenanus-vaccinated. If they are, they report it as something else. This simple trick of circular reasoning serves to prop up all sorts of medical nonsense...as anyone who lived through the past two years can see on perfect display.

Think about it: a medical myth so established has no available mechanism for correction, because all the data will merely appear to reaffirm the myth. This is how medical myths like rabies, syphilis, AIDS, etc. still are widely believed among the lay public.

I used to wear flipflops a lot, and ballet shoes, and rarely sneakers. My feet started to get really bad sensations running on the top of my foot, especially after a jump i did in flip flips and running barefoot on cement. Was it my form or are my feet just no good for hard surface walking?
@Demon09-_-
@Demon09-_- 2 жыл бұрын
it really depends some flipflops are not good bare foot shoes. and while ballet shoes may not do any support they still smash your feet. But if you were still overstriding and heavy heel stirking even when walking its quite possible that could cause an issue. counter to what alot of people learn when runing smaller strides are better when barefoot or minimalst shoes. but hard surfaces are also just harder on your feet. But they normally are good teachers of better form as heel striking bare foot on a hard surface hurts

@@jademarie156 it's definitely worth adding foot stretching and strength work. And the barrier to entry is cheap got a golf ball or anything you can apply some pressure works good to roll out the bottom of the foot. The top of the foot pain after a bad landing or hard landing on a jump is likely some bruising or other damage to one of the many bones in the mid foot. It's hard to say for sure though by just guessing over the internet.

I'm barefoot 98% of the time. Years ago I started in Five fingers, had Inov-8s for a short while for trail races (too narrow). Found Merrell barefoot (still wearing their Trail glove and Vapor Gloves) for trail ultras. Have an old pair Altra Superior 2 and their "The One" (I make my shoes last till they fall apart) wish Altras didn't move up to such thick soles, there for they aren't minimalist much anymore. I've added Xero Z-Trex as my daily out and abouts. These are seriously minimalist. + I've got a pair of their Prio shoe for places where sandals aren't welcome (weddings). Lastly I'm rocking a pair of Softstar Primal RunAmoc for my "dressier" engagements. My theme is wide toe box and zero drop thin soles (Merrells could be a lot wider couldn't you now Merrell?) To the point of the right shoes/foot protection; the 5-Fingers didn't provide sufficient toe protection for rough & wlld trails as a closed toe box, but are ok for groomed park trails. I do wear boots doing yard work and construction. So, ya gotta wear the right thing for the situation.

I highly don’t recommend them (or any sandals) riding a bike either. At age 16, (back in the pre-padding your kid like the Michelin Man, ‘I don’t need no stinkin helmet’ days), I executed an impressive cartwheel on my bike, after my foot slipped off the pedal, into the spokes. Before completely severing two toes, I was fortunate to stop the momentum. With my head. The E.R. doctors were concerned, because, like yourself, I laugh at physical pain (or any other inappropriate times - I’m a riot at Wakes and funerals). But luckily, no dain bramage! Now I’m more safety conscious, and only ride my bike wearing Mexican pointy boots.

I wore XeroShoes Trea flex after I'd seen one of your videos way back. Unfortunately they didn't work for me and I truly gave them a fair shot. After a month or so they hurt my feet so much I thought my feet were adjusting, but after 2 months not only was I sure but I started getting calluses and corns (yuck). I had to ditch them. I'm an avid hiker. I'm using Palladium and an insert now and it's working great. My question to you is are my feet failing because I have to support them? I found a video That said you should be able to move your big toe side to side which supports your arch and balance. True? At first I couldn't move my toe side to side but now it's better. Sorry for the long story 🙄

I've only worn flip flops and sliders for like 8 years now, didn't even own a pair of shoes til i had a funeral to go to, only worn em a few times now. I've never had a nail in my foot but I have definitely suffered other consequences. The skin on the side of my big toes and is rock solid and feels enlarged. My toe nails have become quite thick and hard to cut. They also grow weirdly because I've split and broken them so many times after accidentally kicking things. I also developed a growth in between my toes that I identified as some sort of athletes foot. But it didnt respond to any anti fungal treatment. It was swollen and raw and really hurt. Stayed for like 6 months. Eventually just randomly cleared up completely in the space of a few days for seemingly no reason. This is related because I likely developed it due to walking around outside in barefoot sliders a lot. I walk a lot at night in a cold country, walking through rain and puddles. Overall my feet feel great, though. And so does most of my body now thanks to this channel.

When I was younger, I wanted to get my girlfriend a nice cladagh ring I saw locally. I worked out a deal with the guy to help him load the wood from a barn onto a flatbed (he sold reclaimed barn wood for furniture). Long story short, I was in heavy boots up on the flat bed. It was the end of the day and I jumped off the flatbed after loading a board and…. Huuuuge nail straight through my foot. 0-10 do not recommend. I “feel” for you 😂

Would be better to be barefoot than to have barefoot sandals in a case like that. Without sandals you can feel the sharpness of the nail and lift your foot before it pierces through the skin, assuming you're not stomping the ground like an elephant. Edit: also what's wrong with people coming inside with their shoes on. That's horrendously disgusting. You're bringing dog poop inside your house willingly, on the floor, where your food falls, your baby crawls and your wife practices yoga. And I'm white.

I have stepped on nails with normal shoes twice, the second one just enough to pierce the skin and make a small blood spot on my sock. One of my pairs of water shoes has the vent centered a little behind the ball of the foot. On one of my runs one corner on the side of the road had fresh gravel, the small stuff, and one of the smaller shards of gravel poked up through the vent in the shoe, not enough to break the skin, but I think that actually hurt more than the second nail through my shoe.

I can attest that barefoot sandals are also not a good choice around cows. Especially not ones who have yet to realize that them trying to play with you like they're giant puppy dogs is terrifying and hazardous to those around them. No serious harm, just a slightly stepped on foot, but could've been bad. Same goes for goats who are excited about food you're carrying. I do wear my Lems Boulder Boots whilst working around moderate levels of perilous objects like nails or scary metal. I think I'm less likely to hurt myself when I can be aware of the ground under me and move without pain. Wearing clunky boots, I hurt so much and feel so disconnected from my movement, I think I'd be more liable to injure myself in one way or another.
