I have been doing patient care for forty years. The problem isn't nursing, it is the social decay of the general society and we are not going to escape that no matter what we do to make a living.

@@ellas683 well it really depends on your personality and your character. You’ll either love being a nurse or hate it. I had mild anxiety when I started nursing school , nursing school itself is doable , yeah it’s hard work but if you study every day and not procrastinate it’ll be ok , I actually miss studying I’ll take that over being a nurse ..but once I actually became a nurse I realized I’m in the wrong field. My anxiety worsened to a point now I have full blown panic attacks before work, I’ve tried 3 jobs and it’s understaffed, everyone is stressed out and bitching about their job some days it’s so overwhelming I just want to walk out and go stock food at the supermarket for a job. I also identify as a HSP so it’s super draining and over stimulating to be in this field. I agree. Im a CNA and even though it’s lesser education I got to see how health care works. The nurses at my job are doing administrative work and rarely help. everything you said is so true. i have worked for a year and 4 months. started during the pandemic. i've seen the harsh realities of what it is to be nurse. I can handle it. but it is sad that nurses on social media like to glamorize nursing and do not talk about how much work nurses are expected to do (no supporting staff-PCAs, transport, cleaning staff) and then the disrespect from patients, family members. so i think you're really doing a huge favor to the bigger nursing community by talking about these things. Thank you.

It was only in the last five years that some incidents took place in the emergency room of patients attacking staff. When security came to help the healthcare staff, the patients sued, stating they'd been attacked or unnecessary force was used. As a response the hospital got rid of security. Then they started training staff on how to "deescalate" potentially harmful situations... which literally amounted to, you're on your own. Of course the hospital released a really nice email to all staff saying how much they care about each and every one of us (insert more fake compassion) and that every complaint or concern would be looked into with the utmost care. Healthcare workers are disposable foot soldiers for the corporate machine.

I am 35 and in nursing school right now. I am in a direct entry NP program to become a psych np. This is my 2nd career, I have a prior masters in counseling and spent 6 years as a mental health case manager and therapist. I never envisioned myself wanting to do bedside nursing. Bodily things are so ucky to me my family thought I might not make it through nursing school for this reason. I'm in my 3rd clinical rotation now, advanced med-surg, I'm on an onc-surg floor. From the first rotation I did, beginning med surg, I fell in LOVE with bedside nursing. I am going to finish my program but I am looking soo forward to bedside nursing!! Don't get me wrong I have ducked into a corner to cry for 5 seconds a few times for reasons such as mean nurse preceptor to just being tired and overwhelmed to being frustrated that I don't know how to do certain things or keep track of it all. Granted I am a highly emotional person, I cry during disney movies lol. But, for me, once I let that stress out briefly I am still left with a HUGE desire to keep learning, get better, and not let people dynamics get me down. I love direct patient care and the more I grow in my skills the more effective and safe I will be and that's what fulfills me. I also like how bedside keeps me moving, you interact with lots of different people, and connecting with patients and their families. Not everyone is nice, but not everyone is mean either!

I have been a nurse since 95, been employed in a big hospital for 21 yrs but burnout is real. I quit my job and moved to a small hospital closer to home. Management and politics did me in. I can not stand the favoritism and the atmosphere of being not wanted and not appreciated. I precepted and trained a lot of nurses during my career but I guess my contributions are no longer important. It is the business and corporate environment, the shareholders, the bottomline that is the priority. We are just pawns that can be discarded when we are no longer needed and specially if our payrate can cover 2 new employees. Management is a double edge sword, they can either support you or contribute to the stress of the profession.

That is not enough with all of the unbelievable stress , depression, long hours, work loads with too many patients, patient abuse , disrespect by the management and the lack of common sense surrounding the health and safety of nurses during a pandemic . I'm not sure if you will see this comment or not, but I wanted to leave this on here. I'm in my early 30s and decided I needed to do something new with my life and wanted to pursue nursing. I was originally pursuing physical therapy assisting but after my shadowing hours and discovering some things about the field I was honestly heavily turned off by it. Last year I decided to apply to nursing school, I had most of the prereqs completed but had a few that I needed to finish. Despite not expecting that I'd get in, I ended up getting accepted after my first application but I'm really on the fenc about it. My primary reason for being interested in this field was mostly that it would be something new and I'd literally be able to work anywhere. However, there are many aspects of the job I just really can't seeing as a good fit for me. I also have a major issue with the modern healthcare system that is more focused on profit instead of actually trying to making patients healthier. Several years ago I had a relative that had a stroke that was in a stroke rehab center and I remember them having a barbeque party and all of these stroke patients, some of whom couldn't even walk or speak, were being fed hot dogs, chips, soda, etc. It was just amazing seeing that and I do know that this is not at all an unusual occurrence.

Going through this pandemic has made me think of what matters most in life. It is not always about money, money, money. Yes, It is now 2023 and I’m still stucked with Nursing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. After all, we are only human and we can all make choices with what we want to do with our life and career. Nobody should blame nurses for blowing the whistles or exposing the truth. There are good and bad about working as a nurse, more so during pandemic. Although, the worst is not over yet what you just mentioned is that we do have options. We all have to look after our own health and wellbeing as well. You know yourself best and know when enough is enough, that it is time to move on. It is never too late. For all nurses, and former nurses my message to you all is find your passion. Be strong and persist through failure, persist through “CRAP (criticism, rejection, aSXXHles, and pressure)”. Above all, stay positive.

I am dying to be a nurse, but I was not gifted, bcos I didn't pass my education, so I can't enter to learn to nurse, not gifted is different from you being a nurse already. so concentrate on what you are doing for the sake of the patients. when they are sick, they suffer, mentally, physically, and emotionally, plus a sense of emptiness in their souls. It is very pitiful if you are not spiritually inclined. Pray to Jesus to heal you, in order to do your best in nursing

I just heard on the news that there's research that shows that men that work in male dominated fields such as STEM fields make more than men that work in female dominated fields. They didn't specify which fields are female dominated fields but isn't nursing female dominated. So they're saying that men make more money in STEM.

The "everyone wins generation" most likely will not be able to handle it. It's hard in every way, can be rewarding too for those looking for the "meaning of life" nugget. Covid was the "pandemic no one saw" and an absolute DISASTER regarding the nature of evil. I can understand why my coworkers quit.

Nursing isn't evolving, healthcare is. I was a FT RN in a hospital for 40 years. Nursing careers didn't keep up with progress. How many years did we here they are going to do away with educational levels below BSN?- the entire time I was in nursing, that's how long. It is still the same in many ways. Actually benefits started to be taken away once the big hospitals started taking over. Nursing organizations did NOTHING for nursing.

too many negative thoughts about yourself. Treat it as a reward from God and do it for the sake of the patient's sake, when they are sick they are frustrated and just be a good listener and treat it as a deaf ear

Hahha how is this negative? It's providing a point of view that you have to think about. Nursing is great but I'm not gonna say it's the most perfect career out there. Im positively impacting people by giving people the reality of nursing. Lol such a joke
