I did enjoy this video. I related especially with finding the sweet spot -- challenging yourself just enough to keep pushing forward and learn new things, but not so much that you develop anxiety. Participating in 100 days of code and publicly sharing my progress has helped me, personally speaking. Thanks for your videos!

I feel my brain turn to mush mush.. Everytime I hear another tutorial I got sooooo sleepy RIGHT AWAY!! I feel so stupid. But then I redo the exercise in that tutorial over and over again until I can do it myself and I got so excited. And repeat to another tutorial. It's a struggle allright :D

I’m still learning but one thing that has helped me is changing my perspective on how fast I need to learn everything. Of course this doesn’t work for everyone but realizing that you don’t have to learn a specific thing by a certain time helps. Instead, I simply tell myself I will keep on trying my best to learn this concept or material and I will get it when I get it. We all have different perspectives and personalities and I’m sure that plays a role in learning. Some things we may pick up extremely fast while other times it will be slow. It’s more important to keep moving , one foot in front of the other.
@reactionarydm
@reactionarydm 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I totally agree with this. Sometimes the hurdle is merely a sort of fear of not getting it in the "right" time-frame. Once I tell myself "I'll learn this no matter how long it takes, and that's okay", suddenly the fear is gone and it's pretty smooth sailing from there.

I'm in a boot camp and I wish I had this option. We're on week 5, but my knowledge is still on week 1. I feel so damn behind and feel as though no matter how much time I put in, I just won't get it. My instructor doesn't help with this since he doesn't keep a flow in his teachings, so we'll learn one thing one day and not touch it again until 4 days later yet he thinks because he went over it 4 days ago we're already masters at it.
@haveagudday8068
@haveagudday8068 2 жыл бұрын
@@The_Real_Frisbee I'm kinda in the same boat as you. The realization that i had is: "My learning source is not limited from this bootcamp. Period." Thus I become more open in learning from many sources according the topic that I am stuck right now. Doing more exercises other than the bootcamp provided. Maybe you don't compatible with the instructor way of explaining things, maybe the place where you learn isn't condusive enough for yourself thus you can't focus, the point is if you don't understand a concept it doesn't mean you're stupid. You just need to learn it from another perspective and put more practice into it.

Yeah I've definitely been struggling with all these things. I know I've made progress but I always feel like I haven't. I think its because during Covid there's not much of an actual community of programmers to look at my work and say "You're on the right path". So I always feel like what if I'm nowhere near where I need to be in order to get hired? What if when the world reopens people look at my work and say "wth is this?" It can be discouraging.

The mind set of studying for an Hour is the problem. I feel like I could be stuck on a single simple concept for a whole hour+. In fact it's almost a requirement that you go down a super rabbit hole foe everything haha. I think they key is sharpening your fundamentals. And constant exposure to things or finding the thing that you can progress on semi-moderately.

Idk WHERE to actually learn API calls (for real Development, not a SPA), etc. I made a deal with him that since I'm getting paid 30/hr, that I should cap out at 15 hrs a week, regardless of how many hours I actually work on the project. excellent video, my response is not a reflection on it's content. IT'S NOT THE STRUGGLE TO LEARN CODE THAT'S THE PROBLEM! IT'S THE FACT THAT FRAMEWORKS AND LANGUAGES AND PARADIGM REQUISITES KEEP CONSTANTLY CHANGING... IT FEELS LIKE ALMOST EVERY DAY, AND JUST LEARNING CODE DOESN'T MEET THOSE REQUISITS ONCE YOU'VE COMPLETED THEM!!!! AND ON TOP OF THAT, WRITING THEM IN DIFFERENT IDE'S MAKES RUNNING THEM AS CONVOLUTED AS TRYING TO DRIVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARS! basic concept: I ONLY DRIVE ONE KIND OF CAR TO WORK, WHY DO I NEED TO LEARN EVERY OTHER KIND??? WHY CAN'T THERE BE A DEDICATED IDE FOR EACH LANGUAGE, WITH PROPPER INTELLISENSE, AND WITHOUT HAVING THE WAY THINGS ARE TYPED OUT BE DIFFERENT ACCROSS DIFFERENT PLATFORMS AND EDITORS?? IT'S LIKE I'M PLAYING THIS CONSTANT GAME OF CATCH-UP, ONLY TO FIND THERE'S SOMETHING COMPLETELY KNEW AND FOREIGN TO ME!!!!!! I've studied python, C++, SQL, js/html/css. when I write my code in something like VS comunity/VSCode, and it comes out fine, But then I use something like Replit, and all of a sudden, all of my hard work goes out the window, weather it's some formatting issue between remote, and online IDE coding. Now python; Great language, love the versatility of it's libraries!.... BUT WHY DO WE NEED SOMETHING LIKE JUPYTER NOTEBOOK FOR DATA SCIENCE WHEN THAT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE LATES VERSION OF PYTHON 3 ON IT!!!! Jupyter notebook, in my oppinion, is NOT a great tool for data science, which I've been trying to study. 1. tutorials keep becoming redundant because language changes keep getting added ex-post facto for the version onine! Why can't I get the same effect simply by saving the data visualizations into .png files, or better yet, why can't there be an offline IDE that let's you see your visualizations in a sepparate window, the way VS-22 lets you see things like at which addresses memory is stored (that's another thing, the way memory addresses have to be read between linux and windows, but I"ll save that bc it's small), or Spyder which can actually break down and display each of your base codes variables, functions, classes/members? And then in c++ there's the issue of libraries, which are in their own right REALLY AMAZING!!! .... BUT WHY DO THEY NEED SHIT LIKE CMAKE IN ORDER TO JUST **USE** THEM!?!? why can't external libraries just come in their simple header and .lib files, WITHOUT having to build entire projects!?!? IT IS IMPRACTICAL! Libraries shouldn't need PACKAGING in order to be functional! because once you install them, THEN you have to build the cmake files, THEN you have to build whatever project solution the cmake build comes up with, THEN you have to figure out the include directories and library linkings, but then once you think you've followed all those steps(which github only gives under the assumption you're an expert at how to install anything with cmake or VCPKG or some other thing) SUDDENLY you find at compile time that when you include them either your IDE can't even find them, or they need some OTHER dependency to look for!!! then you ask for help installing them on your system because maybe you accidentally missed a step, and the entire online community comes crashing down on you with "shame, failure, incompetent, scarlet letter" about how you didn't do something right and that's why you're not getting your code to work.... And as for SQL, now there's an otherwise simple language to learn. But then you get into Using different DB managers, and suddeny it feels like the syntax of your code has to change from software to software! I mean... WHY? And if learning python and C++ isn't a constant practice to apraoch a skill like software development, then next problem is this.... "Alright now you need to make sure in C++ you include the correct system OS headers and set up the propper entry points to allow your program to compile and create window and event/message handlers, and you need to make sure you use the correct data structure to store your users information, and don't forget to figure out which design pattern you want for your code so you abstract the unnecessary class/struct members from the users side make sure you create an API that does that, also if you're thinking of having your data stored and entered dynamically MAKE SURE you always write in to delete your dynamic variable containers after you've assigned them using the new keyword and *Why did you even use C++ in the first place, you know there's RUST right?*" like COME ON, don't judge some of us for studying and practicing for years just to tell us we're useless TODAY! Sure Rust is a great language, but it's now like we have to put our C++ skills on the dust collector shelf because of it! And now ever since arrond last October, the rage has now become AI since everybodys been hyped about ChatGPT, and now there's a whole collossal WAVE of different AI programs which now makes putting in the work no longer worth it, so now everything is gearing from learning skills, to learning concepts and letting all these obscure AI tools do the heavy boilerplate coding--- it's just SO DAMNED MUCH!! at this point, all I want to do with the C++ skills I've accumulated is work on VR dev, but even THAT keeps changing to a point where I can't keep up! "You got the vive cosmos in 2020, GREAT, the way to go though is the Occulus Quest, oh now you've bought it WE JUST CAME OUT WITH THE QUEST 2, so you want to dev in unreal, well then let's get you setup in the Occulus developer hub OH WAIT YOUR $2000 LAPTOP CAN'T EVEN RUN ALL THE REQUIREMENTS, not to worry you still have vive and---OH WAIT IT CAN'T HANDLE THE NANITE GRAPHICS OR THE LUMEN LIGHTING LOOK AT ALL THE PIXILATED TRIANGLES, LOOK AT YOUR SLOW FRAMERATE!!! " essentially even just the simplest tasks is about catching up and paying for stuff which becomes obsolete way too soon! too much is going on to be able to afford to spend like that for some of us! It gets to the point where nothing is worth investing, not even a bootcamp which is basically just another unguaranteed titty squeezer for financial debt and unfulfilling work which some of us are stuck in!

As I'm listening to this video, I am writing this comment. Here's the reason why I have struggles learning to code: I work 2 jobs. I average around 40-60 hours a week depending. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I have bad time management when it comes to learning to code and building projects.

I have climbed up from a vertical grave over the years just to understand coding and how to remember it. Then Godot came around, with its GDScript. I saw the light and I finally got it. Why? Well GDScript is just easier, it makes sense, while it isn't too genetic, but powerful, it helps me to understand that I can do a lot in games. C# is far too verbose to me but I like the eloquence of it. C++ is just too much to remember, just to get A to B on the screen. It took years for me to know what to do with my 'self-taught' programming style, but at 44, and 2021 finally hit, I got it. Modern day IDE's like Sublime, and others help me greatly.

Been working boring physical job 8hrs a day, 3 shifts (one weekly), spend 3 hrs in both directions (from home and back). When I come home, I'm damn exhausted in my 26 yrs and rarely I find time to code despite I like it in some point. Actually I'd like to master both, coding and 3D design so I can do something in game development.. Bad thing is as you said, I have no checkpoints or landmarks to see what I did in hour or two.. Then I face problem I can't solve and temporarily give up on learning until next week I get interested into again... And that's the dead race... I mean, if I made habit to take even one hour a day, but every single day, I could expect something... Last time I was trying to code something was week ago... Hard to start, easy to forget.

There's another category of those who manage their time... The ones who punt EVERYTHING else with reckless abandon and obsessively tinker until they get the damn code to cooperate. That's me. I honestly don't know how anyone can code in 2 hour blocks of time. Unless it's something ridiculously simple. But as I'm learning I want a full day or week to dive in. Getting in flow and getting your brain in sync with the task of coding is a real accelerator in development. People will say "I don't have time." I say, "Everyone makes time for the things most important to them." If you're not making the time for it, if you don't love it, if there are too many other priorities, your commitment level has to be 1000x in the bits of time you grant your development. For this there is no easy answer. I'm just speaking in ideals. Anything you commit is better than commiting nothing; just like a terrible plan is better than no plan. Same principle. That's for making the world a better place and encouraging people to achieve their dreams. I wish you all well.

Issue I have is understanding what that Road Map should look like. In the driving example, you would have looked at a map and noticed the landmarks to understand how far away you are from where you are going; thats considering you have never been to this place before. I have never coded beyond simple mathematic equations using Int Variables, so learning Python at the moment is difficult. I need a map, but unsure where I get one from. I understand that a "map" for coding isn't an objective thing, but without even a clue, my struggle is my frustration on knowing when I've actually made any progress.

As always, your videos are very insightful and inspiring. I work full time and have small children so while I try to start studying at the same time every evening, I sometimes don't get started until 10pm. I always push for 2 hours during the week and a total of 5 hours (not back to back) on weekends. I know I have a long way to go because I have only been consistently studying for about 3 months. I am learning HTML and CSS and plan to incorporate JS next month. One thing that sort of discourages me is when I search entry level job postings for software developers or front end developers in my area, it has so many additional requirements other than HTML, CSS, JS, Framework, and Git. It makes me feel like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Either way, I won't give it.

Don't feel afraid to fake it til you make it, check out some videos on just that, job requirements. Joshua Fluke has some good ones. Be well! Currently I get home from work a out 12am which makes it harder but I'm doing what I can lol

Great video. I think another great point for inclusion is to START SMALL! Find some thing simple and manageable that relates directly to thins you want to do in life. Too often people want to go from zero to VR, full-immersion, cutting edge in a year. Even if it's just learning how to modify someone else's code and there is utility to that thing in your life, you begin to establish that short-term positive feedback loop necessary for motivation towards continued progress.

If you feel overwhelmed, take a day off. It's not a race, it's a learning process. But don't play video games on your day off. Go have a long walk in nature. Meditate. Do yoga. Do something that's easy on your brain. The point is to relax and recover. Also, sleep more.

HI Andy, thank you for the videos you make about coding. Currently, I have been studying coding since August 2020, so complete 100% newbie here. I have set up my study time blocks, but I haven't thought about having a plan, also I have trouble understand JavaScript as a whole, and then retention is my other struggle; meaning recalling material I have studied when my nose isn't in the book or I am not watching the videos. Any suggestions?

You don't HAVE to memorize it all, use Google when you forget something or have an issue retaining something. Type out everything also and it'll help with recognizing what you are doing at least and creating a sort of muscle memory. Hope that helps. You can write notes also, writing helps me with learning, though you may be different.

For the purpose of this comment, let's say I'm complete noob and I've no knowledge about programming.. So can you make a video about how to learn android app development? Or can you list out what programming language 1st as a training wheel and than jump to which programming language to learn to make android apps...?

Good news for you i'm currently learning android dev.. first of if the first thing any beginner to programming wanna do is learn a programming language! due to the fact that that is how you tell the computer what you want it to do 👩‍💻😱 ........ so in your case the official programming language you should be learning for android development is java. after learning java then learn android development. the official platform for android development is android studio!....

Even having years of experience there are projects that cause me to want to quit. For example, most of my experience was website applications but recently I had to work on a telecommunication that had no information because it was a legacy system that was hobbling along. Even when I’m not in an IT position I work on side projects to keep my skills up. The last 5 years has been working on an RPG game.

What is your favourite coding application that previews your code in real-time? I have Visual Studio Code on my computer and that's great but I want to see it. I've used CodeSandbox but it rarely shows up even though there is nothing wrong with the code and with codepen the space to code in is so small. Am I just too picky? lol

Mostly, I agree with your points. I also fully understand that career consulting is the objective of your channel as well as your job, so we viewers shouldn't expect any kinds of free consulting sessions from you. However, 4000$ upfront is still a huge amount of money to invest in something I have no idea of how it really works. How about introducing your Mastermind program and how it can benefit us?

Please take this advice. The reason most people are failing is that they do not have understanding of technology they are using combined with incorrect methods of learning new technology. Grinding, putting hours of coding is not the way to go. I fear that most front end developers are reinventing a wheel with their code solutions. If you do not know what you do not know then you are bound to make errors. Start learning technology from the most general ideas. Watch tutorials and pay attention to what this technology does, its features, how it is used. Watch another tutorial about this technology. You will notice that that what you did not understand or missed will be explained differently. Now, move from general ideas to detailed features. Ask yourself question how do I do specific thing. Watch tutorial and take notes. Now you are ready to code. Pick something simple. You will have better understanding what you can and cannot do. Go back to your notes and implement your ideas. This method works!

I have a day of studying art followed by a day of practicing art and restricted to what I just studied. I do this for half a week then switch to code with the same game plan. This has helped me a lot with my self discipline. I am however guilty of having no overall scope. I still don't know what job and skillset to work towards. Right now I do game dev as a hobby, but I don't believe I can sustain myself on that alone in the future. For now I'll keep studying and researching jobs.

I am a noob in coding and I love to write code. My problem so far was that I studied the basics of programming and I thought I know them, it is time for a framework to develop my desired app, unfortunately it does not work like that, you have to practice the basics more and more and only after some exercises you are ready to learn a framework. My advice is: solve and study algorithms first, to solidify your knowledge about the basics, and you will be good to go.

I'm not struggling in general when it comes to learning to code, even if some things are frustrating - like Spring. My biggest problem is that I have to sit at a computer so keeping focused at what I should do is hard. Games, people to chat with, videos, news, blogs etc. Even though I find coding to be more fun than games and videos most of the time, it's still easy to get side tracked. Especially if I'm a bit tired or stuck at something (which happens frequently in coding).
