So thankful for the rain. Unfortunately, I noticed this evening that mold started on my melons in the greenhouse. Will have to treat and just hope those remaining Kajari melons ripen! Blessings

I like your idea about repurposing lids for seedling trays, and your potting up procedure is great, also. I start seeds indoors because when they are sown directly outdoors, local critters look on the tender plants as a micro greens buffet. Chard, for baby chard, can be broadcast sown, which I did in early spring.

Those little babies are so cute. My onions seeds are just starting to sprout. It's always exciting to see those tiny seeds you barely covered turn into tiny green leaves. One of my dogs got into the beet container and starting digging, Not sure if any will come up now. I'll probably reseed it next week if I don't see any signs of life starting. I let my lettuce go to seed in my kiddie pool and tiny plants are sprouting up in there. I'll have to thin them they are so thick. But I may use some for micro greens. Prayers were answered with the rain. May God bless and keep you and yours always.

I think everything turned green overnight! The back pasture looks like it has a hint of color! 😃 Jill check your lettuce seeds and see if they need Seed Stratification. Some do and some don't. I know most lettuce will not germinate until the temps are around 65. I can't remember where I read it, but some pop the seeds in the fridge over night- after sowing ( yep dirt and all) and that triggers the germination.

We have 4 pear trees in our back yard and all four of them have been withering in the heat of the summer despite weekly deep watering. But after this week's rains all four of them have perked up and look so much better! I hope next year will be more consistent rain wise. Our pear crop will not be great due to the heat. One tree has only half bloomed (literally) and those pears that have grown are really small in size. The other two trees have less than 20 pears on them each and one of the pears has not flowered in two years in a row so no pears at all from that one. Hope your fruit trees have done better, Jill.
@ntxg2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura, our fruit trees didn’t do anything this year, no pairs on the big one and on the little one most blew off in the wind. Like you I hope we have a normal season next year and I think we will if this La Niña does indeed move out at the end of this year. Praying for your fall garden my love, Jill

GM lady---good tips on stepping up the pot size and staying in control of the root size. Do you use any type of fertilizer on these little guys while they are growing...any organic fertilize? I am doing the vermicomposting for worm tea and checking into mealworm frass. Want to get a setup for feeding chickens protein via mealworms. Then use the frass from them for fertilizer also. Thanks for seeing how you handle the 'succession' planting if you want to call it that with the consistent reseeding your pod tray. It's like you have an assembly line set up. Good job. I like it. Have a great day. Jesus bless.

I was going to plant some bunching onions- I have a shallow planter, about 4" deep. 12" diameter. I read they don't need much depth. Hope that's right. I got some Miracle Grow organic soil. Someone said brand might not really be organic. IDK now if should use for veggies now. I'm in North Texas too. Other than Calloways, any other brands you like? I got some last year at HD had a lot of wood chips in it and didn't care for it. Supposedly all purpose potting soil. I'm growing in containers at apt since no land but also have small raised bed at community garden.
@ntxg2 жыл бұрын
Hi NC! Look and see if your bagged soil has ammonium nitrate. If you can find organic potting soil that doesn’t have that and uses poultry manure you should be good and you are correct on bunching onions❤️
@nc85242 жыл бұрын
@@ntxg thank you! Just checked and my MG brand organic raised bed soil has ammoniacal nitrogen .008 . I'm not quite sure what to make of science of it- search came back it's part urea and ammonium nitrate. But my Calloways organic potting mix also has but less at .004 ( got last year, not sure if still good.) My Burpee seed starting mix also has that. Not sure what to make of my findings or how that differs from ammonium nitrate. It does have poultry litter. It all says it's for vegetables anyway! Appreciate the tip on researching ingredients so can try to make best choice- not always trusting labels.

Did you leave them on your covered porch after sowing the seeds? I am getting stuff ready for this year's fall garden. I don't know whether to place them inside where it's cool, on the porch to get indirect sun light (hot), or outside in my little greenhouse with a shade cloth (really hot).

I'm debating for the fall garden sister. I think I will keep on porch in shade or under the tent.

Also, I'm wondering about using those tubs for regular potatoes. I was thinking of using 20 gallon feed tubs from tractor supply but those are more than $20 each. I can get the rectangular tubs with the yellow lids from Costco for $8 to $10 each. Should I plant my potatoes next spring in these tubs instead because they are so much cheaper? Would love feedback on this. Thanks!

Hi--not sure if this will help you. But I am experimenting with cardboard boxes that I got from the grocery store...I am using the ones that they get like 6 gallons of milk in. I saw a youtube where some folks were pushing the bottom up and the top down into the box. That makes it stronger. And they were doing a fall crop of red potatoes. The middle of Oct. I put about 4 inches of dirt in the bottom, then put 3 seed potatoes on that (I'm talking about red potatoes---not sweet potatoes.) Then put another 4 inches of soil on the top of them. Each time the potato tops got about 5" above the soil I'd cover them with dirt up to the top 2-3 leaves showing. I did that until the box was completely full of soil. Right now the tops of the plants are about 16" above the box top and full of leaves. I believe this gives the potato plant lots of photosynthesis to produce lots of potatoes. I hope. I will dump the box around Feb....about the time I plant red potatoes again. My goal is to have a smaller crop of potatoes yet a fresh crop of potatoes twice a year. This may appeal to you or not...I don't even know if it will work for me....I am down close to I-10 here in southeast Texas. I only did 4 boxes to see what the return was. But the boxes are free so I thought, why not. Jesus bless.
