Growing up, my mother "couldn't understand" how I could: watch tv, listen to the radio(music), and study at the same time. This was the late 50's and 60's. I was always in honor classes. Perhaps your article indeed would have helped explain what I couldn't explain at the time. It always seemed to me that the "noise" was helpful to my learning processes.

I read a book about two years ago, I've forgotten what it was and it's original source, so for that I greatly apologize, but I do remember was the claim that we make final decisions and variations of (for example if an event were to happen suddenly that forces you to make another decision) an average of 6 seconds before we actually make the conscious effort.

Or, the chipmunk being presented with the stimuli of you handing it a treat against it's own primal brain that has evolved to protect itself from predators is firing 'noise' against your peaceful presentation and it runs away. Then on the next day the non-threat repeated based on no threat stimuli adds an extra layer which overrides the primal 'noise' and the chipmunk gets the treat. I think the two days in the present experience can possibly override thousands of years of possible threats or actual attacks ( sensory vs noise ). They may be 50/50 in strength. The neuronal noise only plays a part in the equation. Maybe this why wild animals can be trained. 10 years against 10,000. Then again some animals turn on people and they lose the bet against nature. This video explains almost nothing.

I think that decisions are conscious. However, I think that the decisions we make are the outcome of countless, largely unknowable, inputs. For instance, I am consciously writing this post, however that decision was derived from my neural chemistry, which is derived from what I consume and what my mother consumed while pregnant, and all of that is derived from an unknowably complex series of interactions leading all the way back to the beginning of the universe.
@lordvivec98969 жыл бұрын
I've thought this for a long time, but have a hard time relating the idea to other people. I'm glad at least someone else shares the same conclusion.
@lordvivec98969 жыл бұрын
***** You would have to know what every single scrap of existence has been through since the big bang. Just a tiny bit of energy from the big bang being shot in a different direction would completely change the universe. It's too much to know.
@jogandsp9 жыл бұрын
***** Lord Vivec The two biggest problems you would have to overcome are: 1. to capture all inputs you would have to travel to the other side of the point where the big bang occurred, which is impossible without faster than light travel. 2. to calculate every piece of information in the universe you would need a computational device with more mass than all the mass in the universe.
@lordvivec98969 жыл бұрын
jogandsp Exactly.
@jogandsp9 жыл бұрын
***** in a sense i would agree, but i am leaning towards no. And here is why: If we had all available information on all particles in the universe we would be able to predict every outcome of every interaction, however that doesn't mean that those interactions aren't random. It could instead mean that everything is random but that randomness is the result of a big bang that had an element of unpredictability. as for choice, i believe that everyone has free will. I just believe that, like we've discussed, those choices are derived from physical interactions and can therefore be predicted with sufficient knowledge of the system being observed. what i mean is that i believe we are all accountable for the decisions we make because no matter what complex series of events makes up our consciousness, that consciousness is still whatever 'us' is. Sorry if that last sentence is a bit hard to follow. It would be easier to get my point across if i was somehow able to communicate my inflections through the computer. for lack of that ability, let me know if you need clarification. as a whole i think that we are agreeing with each other, but communicating our ideas in sufficiently different manners that they appear to be contrary to one another.

I think our decisions are mostly predetermined, but due to "random" fluctuation, possibly related to quantum fluctuations, we get the illusion of "choice"-
@Koroistro9 жыл бұрын
Metsuryu The brain is NOT quantum , it has been proven. The temperature of the system is too high to allow any kind of quantum coherence/entanglement. The fluctuations he's talking about are like the static of the television , it's "white" noise but it can become slightly coherent and hence influence other neurons via induction.
@MetsuryuVids9 жыл бұрын
Koroistro Then, can it be truly called "random"? If each atom and molecule of the brain, just obyes the laws of physics, however complicated the system might be, then all variables are predictable. If you had a powerful enough computer, and every variable in the universe, then nothing would be random, except maybe quantum fluctuations as I understand. So everything we do, would be predetermined.
@Koroistro9 жыл бұрын
Metsuryu Well yes it could , because it is influenced by so many things that it is as a close aproximation of random as you could get. Let me give you an example : mixing a deck of card. It's proven (mathematically) that with a particular mixing technique in 7 mixings you get a system that's over 5-6 sigma near random. It's like the inverted pendulum , they are deterministic but since every so slight external force influences the system the system becomes unpredictable.
@castrocafe80499 жыл бұрын
Wait a second, if everything is random, how can organized systems possibly be possible
@Koroistro9 жыл бұрын
Thinking Out Loud Hmm the premise is wrong , the universe is not random. It is probabilistic (on the quantuum level). It is predictable but without certanties. You have X% that it does something and Y% it does something else. We do know the likelyhoods of a great deal of things. A good example is how some atoms/particles decay. A random behaviour is different from a random system.

All choices are factor by the human brain, denoting physical aspect, the connectome. Where all the process are done mentally or the human mind, so decision making and learning are internal. Outside factors and situations are external but weigh-in on the decision making and situation processing cycle. Another example of internal influences of decision making was mention by other commentators bring up genetics which leads to epigenetics, the current use of genes are turned on and have a higher chance of expression within organism and gametes. Another example of external influences, quantum fluxation (high energetic cosmic rays, pollution, injuries, sickness, virtual particles, etc.) add to randomness and chance. What I got of this was there are categories: two out of unknown types of neurons, sensory and decision making. This study looked into if the sensory neurons control or influence the decision neurons. The hope is if this is the case, can we direct the sensory neurons in a way to maximize learning by amount and timing. Maybe we can use this as also a form of treatment for physical brain damage/trauma or mental disorders? There's a chance for abuse as well as chance for unlocking creativity or mechanic mental component to athleticism. We'll see.. hope others can give more insight on this.

You act on influences you don't know being influenced by. You represent an environment, inner and outer made by the circumstances you were born into and long before that. No, you are not entirely conscious, just aware about a few things, and even those are often interpreted wrong according to the unwanted outcome or unforeseen success we encounter daily in our lives.

Where do our decisions come from? This is a very interesting one that goes deep into philosophical territory as well as scientific territory. In a sense, a decision is a response to assorted stimuli compiled into percepts, which presents us with options. So, we receive options from the outside. There's a very in-depth philosophical debate about whether the nature of the percepts "decides it for you" or whether "you decide based upon personal judgement." I'm in the latter boat for assorted reasons, but I know many smart people in the former boat. xD

Learning something different by doing something different is not a new discovery by neuroscience, nor is bias being associated to meaningful things that can be learned. Talking that way reveals more about a brain fetish than it does anything else.

To me, thinking is all about the word 'suggestion'. Sometimes your brain fires this suggestion in a way that is relevant to what you want to think about, but sometimes you have something like an annoying song stuck in your head (Damn those overly catchy tunes). And when the last part happens you have too much fluctuation, however I am more interested in how it is possible to get your thoughts together in the fist part (when a relevant suggestion pops up). And did you know that everyone has symbiose with viruses and bacteria in their bodies? Maybe it's our partnership with those that help us think?

It's simple people. Self Preservation. The rest is just for fun like all we here are having. You can overthink it. In the end is all about getting along to preserve ones existence and live a more fruitful life. You die. Lets have more fun and pick our brains making whatever we want, cause that is what we are doing. Peace to all and may your mind preserve you for as long as it can, till you make a mistake or have accident and then it's goodbye friends.
