I found all the theories plausible, and I see no reason why all of them shouldn't be considered factors that increased the pouch's evolutionary value generation after generation. While domestic cats may not have as much need for a pouch as a place to store extra energy any more, one might consider the appalling number of domestic cats who go missing for a long time or the even more appalling number who are dumped or abandoned. When every domestic cat has a safe forever home, perhaps that factor may not matter as much, although the pouch's value as protection for the belly and to increase flexibility may still provide an advantage. Yes, camels actually store water in their red blood cells, which are shaped kinda like footballs, and they can expand to several times their normal size to store water.

I have two kitties, one is a skinny long boy, who has a large pouch. And the fluffy boy does not have any at all(visible at least). My first kitty, who wasn't castrated till the age 4, had a big one too 😅

My understanding has always been, that the pouch was in line with theory no. 3, i.e. able to run, longer stride, jump, climbing, etc. I’ve had cats with and without. Those without were more relaxed, less speedy, less climbing, and so on. The ones with, totally opposite - run faster, jump much higher, etc.None of my cats were obese (over many years, I had about 15 cats), and the pouch always felt just like a loose skin. They were more common with larger and leggier cats - both male and female, and all neutered/spayed.

In a nature show about lions and tigers that I saw on TV, it was explained that they have this because they usually eat very large amounts of their prey every few days and the excess skin is to help their stomachs stretch after eating huge amounts of meat at once.

Thanks for the info! My boy, Spike, has always been an “eats to live,” not a “lives to eat” type of cat. I was perplexed by his pouch being present, but now I know it’s normal and more noticeable because of his advancing age (10 1/2 yrs old). I just didn’t see how he could be fat - and he’s not! Yay! Our female adult cat has quite the swinging belly and we have thought that it was because she was once overweight. We don’t know her age and because we took her in off the street, the vet said she was “ageless “ because she couldn’t determine Betty”s age.

Very interesting. I had a female cat, who was unhappy for a period, and developed during this time a pouch. But when the problem, another cat, was away her pouch went away as well. The female red tabby farm cat, was the absolutely most beautiful cat I had ever seen, when she was about 1 year. High, slim and very feline. Than being sad she developed a pouch and I tried to get rid of it, but I couldn't. She has been an old cat since she was four years.

I think their might be another reason - to help them right themselves when they're falling. The floppy weight of the pouch would be pulled by gravity on the way down. See the video, Why Cats Always Land on Their Feet 😊

I have the feeling cats are like humans when it comes to body shape. Too much food makes them fat, but some are more prone to storing reserves than others. I have 2 cats, they both have access to the same food, they don't overeat, but one is a lean and mean fighting machine, and the other is a chubby hippie. Character does a lot too. Both have a pouch 😊

my cat aya got that after being fixed shortly after but shar dose not have that dangling down. i was thinking it was a health problem but was told it usaly happens when a cat got pregnant but aya never been pregnant but she was rambuncous and thught maby she helped caused it along with the operation combined. and mine was fixed a few months too late while had heat. but shar was also fixed and that diddent happen and both are female.
