Thanks Leo. Good advice. As a technical person who used to work in cybersecurity, I get the "hey is this ok I'm worried" question all the time. There's a squishy grey zone between skepticism and paranoia. Skepticism, as you pointed out in your list of good stuff to do, is a good and appropriate attitude to keep. Paranoia is skepticism taken too far. It's exhausting, and not really useful. Too many people worry for no reason and get caught in scary paranoia when it's not needed. But it's hard, because computer behavior can be so confusing, intimidating, and annoying.

One extra comment about popups that suddenly display on your screen and tell you that you've been hacked , is that they purposely take up the full screen even hiding the normal Taskbar. This is intended to make you panic because the is NO way to shut down your PC without the normal "start" button sequence. Not enough people know that the simple answer is to " Press and hold down the physical power button and while holding it down , count slowly to 5 ". This will shut down your running programs in an orderly way before turning off the power to your Motherboard. Note !!! Never unplug the Power at the wall outlet , as this CAN damage software on your PC.

One thing you forgot to mention: If you think someone is accessing your machine remotely, unplug your internet and/or turn off your wifi.

Useful, logical, and sensible advice, Leo. Many thanks.

The problem is modern os systems send tons of telemetry data, so you maybe have probably not been hacked, but in a way you already are from the very beginning

I caught my dad (91 years old) calling one of these pos of "hackers", took the phone, hang out and period. Nothing else happened at all. Not even a call back, which they often do.

also a moving mouse pointer could be that someone has bought and plugged in a "mouse jiggler" that is made to move the mouse to keep a computer from going to sleep and just completely forgot to unplug it or turn it off.

@3:23 That happens to me, once or twice a year. I use a wireless mouse, that connects via a USB dongle. Eventually, the double-A battery dies, and the mouse just freezes. Not knowing if I might be in the middle of something important and timely, I also keep a wired USB mouse connected. So in a pinch, I can just grab that wired mouse and everything is fine. I do not have to rush to get a replacement battery. Well, once or twice a year, my mouse pointer just starts taking a trip across my screen, and I can't stop it. The first that that it happened, I was a bit alarmed. The fix was to unplug the wired mouse. Viola! No more floating mouse. Upon plugging that mouse back in, it works normally. It could be dust, as our host mentioned. But I think that the mouse driver just has a bug that surfaces once or twice a year. I am glad that our host mentioned that issue, because it feels better when you are not alone (although I never did a web search to see if it is a common issue).

it's not hard to believe you're getting hacked when the OS you're on constantly does things you're not aware of all the time, and the only thing that can control that behavior is a massive company that does not care about you. I know a friend of mine would constantly have his wifi connection slow to a crawl, but because he was smart with computers, he was able to tell, "my wife's iphone was syncing and backing up to icloud so I just tell her to turn that off before I start streaming to youtube"

Hi Leo. Just a comment, albeit not related to this video. I use Macrium reflect, and have the last of the free editition (8). I also have versions 8.1.8110 and versaion 10.0.8324. In both cases I refer to the rescue media of these trial versions. What I find interisting is in my case both have expired, but they both still work. I can still create and restore system bcackups. I always understood that once expired it could only be used to restore backups. Anyway, it appears I can still have full afunctionality of the rescue media of these vesions.

Leo can you do a video on pin no longer available due to change in security settings ?

If you open more than one tab on google chrome simultaneously, can activities such as things you type at a website on a tab be known and possibly collected by other websites you visit at the same time on other tabs ?
@askleonotenboomАй бұрын
In theory, no. They're supposed to be separate. I keep hedging, though, because anything is possible, just not very likely.

Thanks Leo for this video, interesting. Can understand from another source that it is a good idea to block third part cookies on your browser. is it not correct??
@askleonotenboomАй бұрын
Has nothing to do with being hacked. Cookies aren't as scary as many make them out to be, but they're more of a privacy / advertising thing. Blocking 3rd party cookies is fine.

Many people think they are way more important than they are in reality. 99.99 % of pc users do not interest hackers at all, even as a game or a test, because its too easy for them. The paranoia created by software manufacturers to sell their shit is without limits.

No need to worry about being hacked. If you have a virus or are hacked, Microsoft will call you to get it fixed.

It isn't April Fool's day again yet, but I'll re-post this anyway: "Any ime I'm trying to log in to any kind of account or anyhing, about a third of he time it rejects my login. I know tha some hack sites do that; you get a fake login hat looks just like the real one, and then it ges your password and says "Wrong password" before sending you to the REAL login. Is my compuer HACKED ??"

I completely agree, though if you have to install something that asked you to temporarily turn off Defender, do so, then turn it back on, as soon as your done. I'm looking at you Adobe with CS4. Around, oh, 2013, 14? I forget, had to reinstall Adobe Master Suite for some reason and forgot to turn on Defender, and not long after that, I got a screen full of pop ups, and they kept coming, and coming, and coming, had to save files etc, then wipe and reinstall Windows (this was Vista), Again, began to install software, got to Adobe, and again, had to turn off Defender, install, but forgot to turn back on Defender. The same issue reappeared. Got infected, yet again, and I believe the registry was infected and Windows got gorked, yet again. After that second time, I DID remember to turn Defender back on after Adobe was installed and the issue never reared its ugly head again. The other day, I think it was Thanksgiving evening, my internet was unusually slow, running at best 20mbps, when it normally runs 180-195mbps, but the next morning, it was back to normal. This is why I keep a speed test active so I can periodically check my internet speed, and most days, I run well over 100mbps, often close to 200mbps, if not a tad above even that. I do have an issue, but suspect my graphics card, now 7 years old, and with 2GB of memory on board, computer has 32GB, and is a 7th gen Core i5 processor and I think the graphics card may be throttling as it sometimes when I go to another tab that is not YT related, and come back to YT, it stutters for a few before catching up, and occasionally it freezes all together. I know part of it is poor air circulation due to the card having to sit right next to the PSU with an itty bitty gap between the card and supply (SFF Dell Optiplex, planning on doing a full upgrade next year).
