Why your GX460 transmission THUMPS when taking it out of Park

Another really good sequence that other GX owners recommended is to put into is
1. Park your GX
2. Step on GX brake pedal
3. Put truck into Neutral
4. Engage E-brakes
5. Put truck into Park
6. Turn off engine.
Works great too! My truck does not move at all when i let go of my truck brakes while i'm on an incline. But this will only work if your E-brakes are in great condition and now slipping from wear.

I think a better way is shift to neutral while foot on regular brake -> press parking brake -> release regular brake -> let vehicle rest on parking brake -> shift to park.

Thanks Bob! I always put the truck in neutral, pull the parking break first and then let it take the load of the truck and finally - put it into park.

I’ve been doing this for years with an added step, after engaging the parking brake, i put it in neutral and allow the weight of the vehicle to rest on the parking brake. When the vehicle is set, then i place it in park. This works great especially on steeper inclines. You’re right, you have to retrain your brain to take these added steps! Great job Bob

Yup, I always engage parking brake BEFORE letting go of my regular brake, keeps pressure off my parking pawl. I also turn off the A/C before leaving the car for some reason. Just a bit of OCD.

I literally do this at the car wash that has a small incline and my Camry hybrid shifter is hard to move into reverse if I forget to do this. But like you said it is natural to me now

I love Bob's VC Cosplay. Also why you should always use your parking/e-brake on any incline. Your Auto trans "Park" paw reslly isnt designed to hold the weight of the vehicle and they can break. Using your Parking/E-brake also prevents it from getting corroded, which can lead to it snapping.

I've been doing this for years! Though for a different reason I am admittedly unsure of how true it is. Apparently, if you park anywhere, whether it be your driveway, the street, etc you always wanna put your eBrake on BEFORE putting it into PARK because if someone hits your vehicle hard enough to move it, majority of the impact will first hit the eBrake mechanism instead of your transmission and a eBrake is far cheaper to replace

True....but how often are you going to get hit hard enough to cause that versus a daily routine of properly setting your parking pawl to save your transmission from "rolling"? In your case, i think the play in the gears are not wide enough to cause damage in the event of another car hitting you. The E-brake assembly should still lighten the impact.

Every time I park, I first shift it to neutral, then set the parking brake, then release the brake pedal, then shift to park.

If there is a little shake when transitioning between reverse and drive after you reversed out. Is that normal? The car is fully stopped when doing so

I come to a complete stop, put in park, then apply e-brake while maintaining pressure on the brake. As long as it doesn’t roll then you’re good right? Or is that wrong and it’s complete stop, e-brake, then park? I have a Tundra

Won’t work in cold climate as your breaks may completely freeze and you will get very big problem to make your car to move.

I only had this happen after a car wash and using p brake in freezing weather. You're telling me this can happen with dry brakes too?

In cold locations use of parking brakes is not good idea at all, the moisture due to condensation and melted snow will make its dirty job

@gxbob my 2017 lexus gx460 has recently developed a musty rear ac smell. The front ac smells great. Im guessing this is due to a clogged rear ac drain. Do you happen to know where the REAR ac drain is? Ive looked over a bunch of forums but no one seems to know

If I bring my GX through a carwash and I let it sit overnight, when i start it the next morning and put it in drive or reverse nothing happens until i give it gas then BANG. Car moves and then everything is fine. Ive asked the mechanics and they have zero idea what it could be. My guess are the brake pads are locked onto the rotor from the hardened chemicals from the wash stuck in there....but who knows.

Even in non-freezing weather? I had this happen to me after a coin op and parking overnight with parking break on in -20C. That bang is NOT GOOD for your entire drivetrain. I would consider not using the ebrake overnight after your car wash then. I have this very small thud every time I accelerate from a stop and not sure if it was there before this event or not. I have a '23 Blackline that isn't even a year old and going to ask mechanic if that minor micro thud about 1-2 seconds into accelerating from stop is normal. I'm told it could be the slip yoke.

If its your slipyoke or drivetrain, then you would feel it when you come to a stop. I would re-lube your yokes and u-joints, then i would check the fluid level in your tranny.

I park my gx460 in my flat garage, but just to be safe, I let it rest as much as possible by driving my Z4 instead. I always drop the top as well so I can sense the current humidity. My Z4 also gets better gas mileage which matters to me because I'm trying to save the phuckin planet and sh*t like that.

Dear Bob, my mic is not working on my 2021 GX, I tried disabling my bluetooth, unplugging the battery but it doesn’t work, I can hear clearly but the microphone is dead. I also seem to have the SOS disabled. Any tips ?

Bob, haven’t you had any vibrations when you go High speed 70-80. You feel it on the floorboard. Is not an alignment issue but the dealer keeps ignoring the problem.

It's not your alignment because it's your wheel balance. Your dealership is not really a tire shop. I would head to your local professional tire shop to have them rebalance all your wheels.

Same here. Steering vibration when accelerate at higher speed. Dealer said they rebalanced wheel tires but first 2 times didn’t help until I insisted them and I guessed they really did the right wheel balancing for the 3rd time. It helped a lot. I think mechanic there either lazy or didn’t do the balancing correctly. Go to professional tire shop. They sure know how to do a good wheel balancing.

Not sure what you meant by that. Did you buy the Chinese Temu version that doesn’t come stock with brakes at all? Or do you mean your brakes needs adjustment?

Your "self-adjusting" E-brakes wear over time and are not as effective as it used to be when bought brand new. The play in your E-brake pedal is the first indication of wear. The pedal travels a lot closer to the floor than when you first used it on day 1. There is a serrated turn gear in your rear drum that can be flicked a notch to make the brake shoe drag slightly more onto the drums. Make sure its a drag feeling and not a stuck feeling when you rotate the rear rotors.
