My son just started college this year and this was not the case. No accredited transcript necessary. He applied at five different universities, both public and private. I created his transcript and all the schools accepted it.

Elaine how do you find out if the college requires an accredited transcript? I don’t see if anywhere on several college sites

Call the admissions office. They will be able to tell you what paperwork/records you need to bring with you.

Three of my sons joined the marines. I listed the texts we used, the skills they learned through projects at home (mechanics, plumbing, electrical, home improvement, etc.) I listed people they had worked for. Then I added a cover letter explaining how I 'graded' their work. I explained home-school laws and that certain things they had asked for were not required. I included the last approved notification and our home-school diploma. They accepted these, but it was often a grueling process because the Marine recruiters change so often and each has to learn the law regarding this. With my last son, they felt badly for returning for more documents so often, that one Sergeant gave me a gift card!!! But I just wanted to let you know what they accepted.

Your kid can take the GED exam and have no issues. I know several home school families that did this and their kids had no problem getting into college. They also had excellent SAT and/or ACT test scores as well.

I've been homeschooling from the start, and have always believed that the transcript was what mattered, not the diploma. However, now that I'm doing the college application process, I've discovered that the opposite is true in the case of our first-choice college. The college is not concerned with the transcript, but will not admit without a diploma, and proof of proper registration to homeschool with the state. The good news is, it's easy to make one's own diploma on a platform like Canva : ) (in either instance, accreditation is not an issue)

I believe if your student starts out at community college first (takes pre-requisites, etc) all they require is a GED or diploma and they usually require placement tests for English, math, etc. It's an option and cheaper too :)

This!! And as a homeschooler here in CA one can take college courses as a highschooler
@deeptime55814 жыл бұрын
I think you should include the choice of taking a state exam to get a high school proficiency exam as, for example, California does. That of course does not end the problem of taking a sufficient number of credits required by selective institutions for application, well beyond 16 credits for most. Then there is also the issue of rigor of classes. I think it is good to think of the application from the admissions committee point of view, that you are going to have to demonstrate rigor in the course work. I think a portfolio is an excellent idea. We have just gone through this process and we submitted an extensive portfolio to an Ivy League school. I have felt from the beginning of the process that the onus was on us, the parents and, in this instance, also the teachers, to prove academic accomplishment. A lot probably depends on what the goal of the student is vis a vis which college, etc.

Thank you for posting this video! I'm looking into going to college right now. I'm 31 years old and I want to get a degree in Information Technology. I was homeschooled from birth. My mom didn't have actual classes and mostly just winged my education based on what she thought would be good for the day. Many of my classes were more religious-based. As an adult, I feel like my education is extremely lacking. She kept no records of anything. As a homeschooled student without any records, what should I do? I have a diploma though... so there's that. lol
@homeschooltohomeschool4 жыл бұрын
I would contact the college you're looking at and determine what they want from you. At 31, they are going to be looking for different things than someone straight out of high school -- including life experience -- and probably have a counselor specifically assigned to older students. Best of luck!

My question is I have a struggling learner in 10th grade. He realistically won't go to a 4 year college. He may go to a jr college, trade school or straight to the workforce, would I need to consider the accreditation?
@homeschooltohomeschool5 жыл бұрын
I always recommend that a mom take a look at the college/trade school (whatever) that you think your child will go to and then ask what the requirements are. Usually with those less-intense schools, they have open enrollment, so accreditation wouldn't be required. But is always worth a phone call so you know what you ought to be aiming for.

I still don't think I understand this. If an accredited transcript comes from an accredited institution like a school, how does a homeschooler get one?
@bgraham1504 жыл бұрын
We’ve had 2 kids graduate homeschool with our son going to the Air Force and our daughter in college. In Texas, you do not need an accredited transcript nor does the military but the military does require a diploma and transcript.

@bgraham1504 жыл бұрын
Tony Bologna hey Tony. My wife keeps a record of the courses they’ve taken and provided a transcript to the Air Force. It wasn’t accredited. They however require a diploma and you can purchase one from hslda.org.

Thank you for your videos! I learn so much from them :). So, if you don’t mind me asking, how are you going to foster your daughter through the process of having “accredited” course work to enter the college of her choice? I’m a long way off with my tot, but knowledge is power! Thanks again!
@homeschooltohomeschool6 жыл бұрын
Once she got to a certain age, we started talking about what her goals were and what she wanted to accomplish. Then we looked at colleges and what they required to get in. Most do not require an accredited transcript, so for her, we didn't need to worry about it. Now I have a son who is actively looking at colleges - but his goals don't require one either. So we take each kid individually - but so far, all of their academic goals work for how we are doing things. But I still have two ... so we'll see!
@brandonhuggins19495 жыл бұрын
Do you have to get the transcript notarized
@homeschooltohomeschool5 жыл бұрын
Since every college has different requirements, it actually depends on where you will be submitting it. The best thing to do is to contact the colleges that your child is interested in (or you think they will be interested in) and find out what the requirements are there.

umk - the first part you're basically telling me you have to apply to a regionally accreditated institution that grants diplomas in order to get the "accredited transcript" which is contradictory to your title...these are very likely from paid institutions that will also issue diplomas; and if not, from public charter home schools that also issue state diplomas. So not sure why you're telling me this...the 2nd part would make more sense for your video (based off the title) but you focused way too much on institutions that, not only will issue an "accredited transcript" but also an "accredited" diploma. :D:D. Wild.
