0:20 - "PUSHING water out of your body". That's interesting phrasing, but less interesting since I already found out that many people can't pee by just relaxing and letting it flow out by itself (unless they are busting). They have to actually push, to expel the liquids, otherwise nothing comes out. Now, to get the last tiny bit out, one will have to push a bit either way, so both sides have a bit of each other's situation going on to a minor degree lol. How beautiful.

Helical pee streams can have disastrous effects on aim. As the pee pulls inwards, conservation of angular momentum makes it spin *faster*. When the stream breaks into droplets down the line, individual droplets sometimes end up with a lot of linear momentum. Under the right conditions, the end of the stream turns into a kind of spray. @steve I think I can see the beginnings of this at the bottom of your helical stream demonstration, but your video just barely cuts off the breaking up of the stream.

5:10 What I think. When we pour water from the container like jug. Water wants to come flows out in cylindrical shape. But when it leaves the container it becomes thin like a flat paper. Cylinder changes to flatten cylinder. And due to outward coming force this flat surface roates. And it keeps on rotating. You can confirm this by taking a long strip of clothe hold it from one side and turn it from other side. Like do several twist. The exact same shape will form.

I've wondered and puzzled over this for years now (seriously). I always saw my own stream as a twisted ribbon (as in your last example). But I think it's actually more like the primary example in this video. And as soon as you pointed out that it's not "twisted", I immediately knew the answer (that it's just an oscillation of surface tension trying to reduce the slit/flat stream to a rounded cross section.).

I believe the rinse aid is a weak surfactant, which looks like it lowers the surface tension enough that forming droplets spontaneously is less likely, but it still has enough to do this effect. Nice sweet spot! Great video.

not necessarily: A pee stream is not driven by gravity alone, but also by bladder pressure. Therefore the stream will not thin and break apart because of non-uniform speed across the length of the stream. If you manage to keep the break-up forces smaller than the surface tension of the stream cross-sectional area (much easier to do in laminar flow), then you should be able to prevent the stream from breaking into droplets. Another reason the MB experiment COULD have failed would've been the "morning after" pee stream: with your stream production tool being all swollen and stiff, the equivalent diameter of the orifice is reduced enough to make the jet strong enough to make the break-apart forces stronger than the surface tension. This can manifest as a split v-shaped stream or as one that starts off as a sheet and which breaks apart further down the stream.
@beyond6storm3 жыл бұрын
in other words you have 2 options: - as MB said themselves in the episode: you can do it if you are hung like a horse or - if you pee like a water-jet cutter

This is brilliant! I always wondered about that, but assumed it was something to do with the "liquid" coming out at different angles on each part of the cross section. And have you wondered about what is the movement a particle would inside this flow? Would it kind of rotate along or would it take some other type of movement? Thanks Steve Mould, your channel is brilliant!

Great video. Can you do one little trick with the rinse aid study? Maybe use a syringe and inject to one side food coloring or a few sand particles. Simply out, if it's oscillating the color should stay on the same two sides with little crossing of paths. If it's actually spinning the fluid with color / dye / particles should be criss crossing from one to the next and then the next in the same direction on the way down. Not that I don't believe it's oscillating, but I do think it would be astounding to see one side of it limited to the same two sides as further proof. It could also be done with dividers in the container and coloring only in one that's near the edge of one. Let me know your thoughts on my lunacy, My good man, if you would please!

BRB trying to make helical urine. Edit: I totally typed this as a joke, then got curious and actually tried it. Guys, I have good news, you can make your urine helical. I'm not even kidding. Anatomical detail incoming so if you're shy or whatever don't read on. Pull your foreskin all the way back before you start peeing, GENTLY place your thumb and forefinger on the head (glans, whatever), start peeing, then very gently turn the head about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. You don't want to pinch and twist so hard that it deforms the shape of the urethra opening, but just enough to give it the slightest of "S" shapes. We're talking microns here (hehehe). It totally worked for me and I'm more excited about this than I should be. Go give it a try.
