Why Your Sermon Points Don't Work (and how to fix them). Grab your FREE 21-Day Guide to Creating Killer Sermons: preachingdonke...
You make points in every sermon you preach. You try to communicate at least one point. One idea. One bottom line.
You may have one major point but a number of supporting points. The point is, you make points. Get the point?
So, what do you do with every point you make? Is it enough just to say the words. “My main point is _________. Okay, let’s close in prayer.” Well, we both know that would be insufficient.
We have to do more than just say a point for it to stick. But how do we do this? How do we develop sticky points that land on people in powerful ways?
If you find that your points are not getting across the way you want, it might mean that they're missing three key ingredients. In this episode, we are going to dive into the three things you must do with every point you make in your sermons.

I appreciate your call to clarity and meaning. I preach just a few times a year, but I always like to take a break from my content and see if I’m on track for a message that really changes lives. This article will be a great resource for me.

If someone verbally taught me how to play golf for years I would be no better than a beginner who had not heard a lesson on golf. Behaviors cannot be taught verbally. We were never meant to listen to "how to live a godly life" without observing and receiving godliness from others. Godliness has to be intrinsically developed. Empathy has to be developed intrinsically. Parents teach their children empathy by showing them empathy. The child through a process of time intrinsically develops the trait. Parents who just talk to their children about empathy may be puzzled at why their children don't listen to them and don't develop empathy.

The sermon-lecture doesn't change people's lives. It is merely information impartation. People change when they observe the behaviours of others and intrinsically develop godly qualities. We're not discipling anyone by talking to them. We can't learn golf by reading a book on how to play golf. We have to go to the course and intrinsically develop our golfing skills. Plus, 100% of preachers don't know the basics of Koine Greek and are just misquoting the Bible badly. I taught Attic and Koine Greek to European students for 25 years. One preacher said that "be anxious for nothing" is a commnd. But Greek imperatives are not always commands. In the Aramiac and Greek world no one said "please." Besides, "Give us this day our daily bread" is an imperative. Are we commanding God to give us food?
