@bongi68119 ай бұрын
I think the main reason that Tom Scott adjusted the thumbnail on his last video is to better reflect what he's saying in the video and not because of a sudden change of mind. At around 3 min in that video he describes his plans as "taking a break" and "this probably isn't goodbye goodbye, like not forever" which clearly shows that he is reserving the option of making new content in the future.

Like, this makes me actively want to watch Colin and Samir less, because basic comprehension is kinda important.

As an artist (photographer) that got "retired" due to sickness out of my control, and also extremely frustrating because I'm not ready to stop working, I feel that first part HARD. If I wasn't stuck with the changes that got forced me; I'd 100% still be working. Lmao'd at the Tom Scott comment too, I went in late to his channel but he sure had a lot of fun. I see it as the algorithm forcing creators to put out more videos than they wanted because otherwise youtube would stop showing/recommending them. KZbin is a very strange medium now that it's trying to be commercialized by google and had lost a lot of it's freedom. Especially with the newfound ad push.

In my opinion most people that claim they have stress and burnout have never had a really crappy job. I have been in the military and have worked in customer service for Netflix. I wake up every day like it is Christmas because I am a full-time creator. Even when things are rough and the views are down it is better than the best days in the Army and Netflix.
@FosukeLordOfError9 ай бұрын
Burnout I think is generally caused by effort that does not line up with what we get out of it. As linkin park said "I tried so hard and got so far but in the end it doesn't even matter"
@asdasdd3209 ай бұрын
I get your point - but you're simplifying burnout to match your reality of the world 👍
Good points here. I'd happily burn out if a job pays well. But after 20 years and no prospect of ever owning anything you do end up thinking that you do it for survival only. Also, health issues creep up and it's easier to burn out when you aren't as healthy as you were.

The most disappointing thing about this video is that they lump Matpat and Tom into the same category for why they are retiring and yet not correctly mentioning their reasons. Matpat retired because he is becoming a manager and knows his voice isn’t scalable. Tom Scott is retiring because he doesn’t want to scale and become a manager. The whole tangent about setting projects and goals is literally what Tom Scott has been doing for his entire career and yet you are acting like he wasn’t doing it at all. The real reason why all these people are retiring is because the industry has gotten old enough for people to reach a point where retirement is on the table. The not forever part isn’t weird at all as most jobs have a semi retirement option especially those in creative industries like films and music.

I have yet to watch the whole video but something that already struck me as weird was MatPat and Tom Scott catching flack for "retiring", when both very clearly stated that they are retiring from continuously hosting and releasing "their" main formats. Both clearly stated that they wont just be gone forever but refocus their attention elsewhere. Tom Scott retired the recurring, scheduled format. MatPat retired his main host role
@wonday27389 ай бұрын
They're getting flack for clickbaiting it as such, MatPat was just on the show and described his "retirement". Colin and Samir are aware of this, they simply assumed most their viewers could understand the context they're speaking in. Looking at the comments many didn't. Why would you make a comment before watching the whole video? Also, Colin and Samir recently hosted MatPat, how is that flack?

You made a point that will stick with me forever. You are a successful video, media platform, “ on KZbin”and have been unsuccessful 70% of the time. I took the leap to be a full-time creator, and 2021. Exactly 3 years ago. Averaging 1.5 million views per month that number dwindled down to 250,000 per month. I am technically a failure on KZbin at this point yet I still manage to do this full-time. Because of a massive pivot. ( won’t get into what I did here ) but, hearing you guys say this, and living through it myself really helps me not feel Alone. You guys rock I watch everything you do and thank you so much for putting your best foot forward 100% of the time so that 30% success rate can keep you going because you guys sure add so much to this space Chris .

That point about the "singular artistic voice" is really interesting. At a certain point as you scale that "artistic voice" also becomes a "brand voice". It might be based on the original voice(s) of the individual creator(s) but as you build a team of people, all of whom have an impact on the final product, it becomes a branded style and tone of voice instead. And it's the scaling up of the projects, teams and scope that requires that shift.

@wilbo.channel9 ай бұрын
I like that “jacket” metaphor (analogy?). Though I do think that hasn’t always been the reality. Up until very recently, the understood rule on KZbin has been, “you cannot afford to take a break because people will forget about you and not care when you come back.” Not that that’s always been the case; plenty of very successful channels have taken long, announced breaks and returned to even greater success. But they’ve always been seen as the exceptions. I’d say pre-COVID era creator advice would say, “You might as well burn the jacket, because if you put it away, whenever you decide to take it out of the closet and try it on again, no one will be there to see it.” I think the quality of a creator’s content and the audience/relationship with said audience that they’ve already garnered provides a more padded safety net of the viewers patience. And more recently I’ve been finding more and more creators reinforcing that sentiment when offering advice, y’all now included. I hope it becomes more normalized across the board that breaks are not something to be afraid of (*as long as you’re making stuff that you believe in and not just riding trends.) Good people will wait for good videos.

I think you're only approaching this from one side of the story. Sure, someone like MatPat is not 'retiring' to just live the good life. He's stepping down from being the guy in front of the camera (on most of his regular videos), and possibly scaling up behind the scenes, as you're saying. There are however smaller creators who don't necessarily scale up like MatPat, or change their regular schedule like Tom Scott. Channels with a consistent 100-1000+ live viewers, who are not 'unsuccessful', but are moving on to do different things which are not necessarily related to creative work. They have communities surrounding their persona, but might be more private about their real identity. Some of them might just disappear for lack of inspiration, but it's becoming more common to set an end point and say you're retiring/quitting/graduating (vtubers) for varioius reasons. Usually, it's related to some kind of change in their life or on the platform.

In both his original announcement and his goodbye video he talked about it being a break instead of permanent, and that he’s still going to be doing his Lateral Podcast, Technical Difficulties etc., and the thumbnail change is just because people saw the thumbnail, made assumptions that he’d be stopping forever, and didn’t watch/pay attention to the content of the video.

I think C&S's disagreement about when you stop being a "creator" is just a symptom of how broad the industry has become. When Samir says you stop being a "creator," I think he means that you start being a "media executive." The reality though, I think, is simply that "creators" encompass millions of creative people, while a subset of those creators have scaled to the point of being "media executives," and yes, to Samir's point, that might happen when you hire your first (non-partner) employee, because that's when you become a "manager," on your way to full-blown "executive."
