She has been in LA for several years now. She has family there, so she traveled there even prior to living there full time. Her record label is based in the US, so she moved here to help to help her career. The honore's children were there listening to this, which is why she treated this with such delicacy. They are Angelina's age, and their mother is imprisoned in Iran for fighting for womens rights there. Angelina's grandmother is from Iran, so this probably means much more to her than most who could have performed this for this occasion. This is a song from a movie about a prisoner thinking about missing his family, which is so appropriate in this instance. ❤️❤️❤️❤️👣

John Gary vs Angelina Jordan Unchained Melody **** One of the most memorable experiences of my life was seeing John Gary perform live in Seattle, WA, when I was 20 years old. He had such a powerful and beautiful voice that filled the whole auditorium. During the break, he sat down on the edge of the stage and played his guitar, singing Unchained Melody with so much emotion and passion. It was a sublime moment that I shared with my wife, and I felt like we were the only ones in the room. At that time, I thought to myself; how could anyone top that performance, but 56 years later a 17-year-old Angelina Jordan just did. Angelina Jordan's performance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Norway in 2023 blew me away. She sang with such passion and emotion that I felt every word in my soul. I don't know how Angelina manages to do this, but I just watched another reaction to this video and I ended up teary-eyed BOTH times! As I was looking at her, I recalled her backstage interview on Norway's Got Talent. She was 7 years old and about to go on stage for the first time when she said, "...and when I grow up, I want to be a superstar." This, as was her audition of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday", was an outstanding performance. 💕

Hi Maria. Welcome back to Angelina. Your analysis re AJ's softening of the song was spot on. The reasoning behind her softer emotional arrangement was that the recipient of the prize is currently imprisoned in Iran, sentenced to over 100 lashes and decades in jail due to her standing up for women's rights. Notably, Angelina's Grandma Mery is Iranian as is AJ in part. Plus Norges two adult children were in the audience and I assume received the prize on behalf of their mother. Imagine the maturity of a 17 year old teen singing live in front of a full orchestra and millions of her home countrymen, and the world, having to perform the song in such a way as to honor a political tortured prisoner, plus honor the beauty of the song and take care not draw attention away from the main focus. Any mistake would have been obvious, including excessive runs and over belting. Few if any singers could have risen to such a high pressure situation with such grace and poise. Angelina not only rose to but soared above, channeling her inner angelic emotion. A true prodigy the likes of which I have never seen in my 68 years on this earth. What an honor to witness. A performance for the millennia. Brings tears to my eyes each and every time.

Thank you for contextualizing. Now, for me, her choices make a lot of more sense. Including the song itself that originally referred to an imprisioned person. Her choices showcase her empathy. When she sings "I need your love" clearly she puts herself in the place of Narges.

Maria, thanks for your reaction and I hope you had a joyous Christmas. I thought "Unchained Melody" was a odd choice for this event, but have since learned the history of the song. More on that later. Certainly Angelina was thrilled to be performing back in her home country of Norway, where she is a national treasure, but this performance goes way beyond that honor. She first performed at the Save the Children event at the 2014 Peace Prize event, when she was 8 years old. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges, is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change. In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.

Not even Bobby Hadfield's 'Gold Standard' rendition permeates my inner being as deeply as Angelina does here. It is a fitting tribute for this year's 'Nobel Peace Prize' recipient Narges Mohammadi who is languishing in an Iranian prison for simply trying to improve women's rights.

She was very much into the song, Maria, and I strongly suggest you read up about who Narges Mohammadi is and why she was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize Award. Toward the end of the song, when you play it again for yourself, you can hear Angelina crying out for hope, hope that the family of Narges can once again be united.

Angelina let us know that she was responsible for much of the arrangement of the song, and the orchestra gave her their blessing. Happy New Year Maria! I was thinking of how to best spread the story of Narges Mohammadi. I, along with many other Angelina angels, watched the livestream of the tribute to Narges, where Angelina performed. This was a special tribute, held the day after the normal Nobel Peace Prize concert. Was so very sad that the number of people watching the livestream on KZbin never reached 300 and many were angels. This is why I am suggesting you and Dad, react to the first 20 minutes of the livestream, which begins with Narges' two children talking about their mother who is in prison in Iran. Her two children, a son and a daughter, are twins and currently 17 years old just like Angelina. There is one other musical artist, a Norwegian/Iranian female pop artist who performs before Angelina. Including the beginning of this tribute, in a reaction video, will help spread the story of Narges. You can stop watching after Angelina's stunning performance. Since Narges is currently on a hunger strike, I request you do this reaction before the other Angelina reaction I requested and bought pizza for, as she could die of hunger in the near future.

Yes, she does soften it, and for that reason the accompaniment needed to adjust for that, at some points we loose the subtlety of her interpretation of some parts of the song.
