Robb Stark…..The Young Wolf, King in the North, as Jaime Lannister once said "He won the war on the battlefield and lost it in a bedchamber," and he did ultimately lose and for many more reasons, but for a young kid tasked with carrying his family’s fate on his shoulders, no father to guide him as he had lost his head, a grieving mother making rash decisions herself, siblings who he thought to be either held hostage or plain dead, allies whom were presumably trustworthy but actually politicking behind his back and more or less orchestrating his downfall, was he not set up for failure all along? No, he didn’t help himself with his decision-making off the battlefield and family certainly didn’t help his case either, nor did his presumed allies and close 'friends,' but the Game of Thrones was working against him. He no doubt impressed in 'The War of the Five Kings' as a shockingly rich mind for battle and warfare, when he had just been thought to be nothing more than a 'green boy,' outsmarting Tywin Lannister on the battlefield and even capturing his golden child/heir in the Whispering Wood. But…..He was always fighting an uphill battle, always at a disadvantage. In the books the Red Wedding was 100% a political mishap on Tywin’s part because its not only registered Robb as a martyr to the Northern folk, as a boy King who called his banners, rebelled against the Throne, and was only k*led by way of betrayal and pure treachery along with his mother and still loyal banner-men, as someone killed under the sacred guest right, but its painted the Lannisters, Freys, and Bolton’s under a worse light than ever. In the books, the North/Manderly’s are rebelling against the Bolton’s, the one true King Stannis Baratheon is retaking the North, Jon was supposedly legitimized by Robb himself and named heir to the North, Rickon is alive, Lady Stoneheart is looming, exacting revenge on the Frey’s/Bolton’s/Lannisters, and maybe plotting a Red Wedding 2.0…..Moral of the story is, Robb Stark will be remembered as the young, first 'King in the North' in 300 years time, as an honourable, just man with a good mind for warfare, and as a player in the 'Game of Thrones' who won every battle but lost the war. [P.S. my thumbs hurt :/]

Robb made so many unfortunate mistakes in his campaign it's so sad. But I think his single most grave mistake was only giving Edmure vague instructions on what to do with the Lannister forces and even worse than that was killing Rickard Karstark. But can you even blame him when he was 16 years young going up against the most powerful man in the realm?

Many people say Robb is at fault for the whole Edmure thing, but in reality he really isn't when you come to think of it. Robb didn't make his plan when he was in the riverlands and could inform Edmure he was in the westerlands were the risk of a raven getting shot down or a messanger getting intercepted were too high to risk such sensitive information getting intercepted by the Lannisters. Robb had no choice in the matter and was just hoping Edmure would obey his orders, though i agree his orders to Edmure were to vague.
@bennettval6538
@bennettval6538 10 ай бұрын
The reason Robb expected Edmure to obey his orders was due to the military situation in the Riverlands when he left. The Riverlords and the Lannisters had been fighting all over the place with little result and Robb and Edmure had already spoken about the danger of Marching on the Lannisters with the force they had. He also expected Edmure to know the Lannister army was coming to him( even Cat knew there was no reason to fight)

The Young Wolf, Robb Stark, first King in the North in 300 years. The last one being Torren Stark, the King who Knelt. Edmure is not at fault for Robb's plan not working. Robb did not inform Edmure of his plan or its goals. As the Commander in Chief, Robb bears the responsibility for this failure to convey vital information to his commanders, who in the absence of clear directives and reasons, will exercise initiative on the tactical level if they are kept in the dark on their commander's strategic goals. Robb was a brilliant tactician, there's no taking that away from him, but he was an abysmal strategist.
@connordorman117
@connordorman117 Жыл бұрын
Tactician and strategist mean the same thing, I think you mean he's bad at delegation. He assumed that Edmure would carry out his instructions without knowing the end goal.
@grandadmiralzaarin4962
@grandadmiralzaarin4962 Жыл бұрын
@@connordorman117 Tactician and strategist do not mean the same thing. Tactics or the tactical level are actions taken or devised in the moment to secure victory in an individual battle. Strategy is the planning for future events before they occur to obtain the overall goal of a campaign or war. Robb was a brilliant tactical level commander when it came to battles and his immediate localized situation in said battles, but he was an utterly inept strategist because he never actually had a viable long term strategy on how to achieve his goals, or even what those goals truly were. Robb's problem aside from his shortcomings as a strategic commander wasn't delegation, it was failure to adequately or competently convey intentions or his plans to key members of those plans. He'd tell a commander to do something but not why or how it factored into the plan, which is fine on a tactical level when the situation is immediate in a battle, but it's entirely inadequate on the wider strategic level where more time and distance are involved because a vague order without explanation given weeks or months beforehand will seldom appear to reflect the situation someone other than himself might interpret. Robb never had an overarching strategy, he would constantly change his goals and how to reach them almost daily, he was trying to win battles while Tywin and Stannis were planning how to win the war.
@bennettval6538
@bennettval6538 10 ай бұрын
@@grandadmiralzaarin4962 Robb was a good Strategist. I don't know what you read cause it is clear that Robb was planning to win the war not just battles. He was literally accounting for Stannis's in his plan in the West. Edmure is actually at fault for it cause even Cat could see he has no business fighting that battle. Do people who defend Edmure ever take into account the fact that Robb's information on the situation in the Riverlands came from Riverrun and as a result Robb couldn't have warned Edmure not to fight an army he didn't even know was Marching yet. The overall Strategy was draw Tywin out of Harrenhal and destroy him. Robb had already told Edmure they didn't have the troops to fight Tywin at Harrenhal and even Cat could what was happening. While Robb could have have Edmure his Strategy it's also a fact that Edmure could have told Robb his(especially since Robb was supposed to be a part of it).
