Ahhh yes I’m finally glad that someone is doing a discussion about the whyte notation. I’m glad this pop upped and I can’t wait to see more about this, in your video that you make about this you should also include booster locomotives for their wheel arrangement is bizarre. 👍

I was thinking the same thing when developing this series. I'll have to do a special series on the strange and lesser known wheel arrangements. Thanks for watching!!

@@americansteamlegacy-yh9dr looking forward to that special series. One of my favorite funny arrangements to discuss is the Fontaine 4-4-0.

This is fantastic, had this pop into my recommended today, and I'm pleasantly surprised. I am already well familiar with the Whyte notation and functions as I've rediscovered my love for steam engines thanks to my hyperfixation returning. But I am certainly going to subscribe and watch the rest of the videos, there is always something to learn! Awesome work :D

Hi Wolfex. I knew this channel would gain a following of people who are already familiar with the Whyte Notation, but I decided to include the Introduction for the benefit of those who are new to steam railroading and it seemed a logical place to begin the series. I'm glad you enjoyed it even though you are already familiar with the Whyte Notation!! Thanks for watching and thank you for the compliment!!!

Isn't it silly to count wheels instead of axles? Is an 4-6-0 (in Cerman 1 C for one pony axle and 3 x coupled axles) an Articulated or an engine with an 2 axle pony truck and 3 coupeled axles ?

Hi Steffen. The Whyte Notation is just one of several classification systems used around the world. The UIC System, or German system, counts axles instead of wheels. The UIC system has in many parts of the would replaced the Whyte Notation and includes modern diesel, electrics, and multiple unit motive power. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!!

One side effect of the Whyte Notation was it doesn't cover wheel types that didn't pan out. "Why doesn't it cover the..." "Don't do that!"

@@americansteamlegacy-yh9dr the only reason I said anything is cause I have a cast iron 2-4-0 from 1888 it's a floor toy

The 2-4-0 became the 2-6-0 with the addition of an additional driver behind the firebox with some weird suspension arms.

There is an issue with your definition for the the leading and trailing wheels. What happens when you have multiple axles that are carried independently of other such as on the Crampton style locomotives?
@americansteamlegacy-yh9dr

Hi Neil. That's a great question. The Whyte Notation doesn't distinguish how the leading and trailing wheels are attached to the locomotive. The wheels ahead of the drivers are grouped together regardless of whether the are carrying a separate truck or attached directly to the frame. The same is true for the trailing wheels. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!!
