This Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie movie is based on the memoir of Susana Kayson's time in a mental institution, but how close does the movie stick to the truth of her experience?

Sociopaths have emotions, what they don't have is empathy.

Also, isn't sociopathy created by experiences and psychopathy is biological (you're born with it)?@@exileayahika

I say this with no disrespect. I love this movie it as part of my early 2000's sad girl moment. This year I decided to read all of these books that inspired these movies. This one was a mess, rambling thoughts no actual story line just a collection of moments slapped together. This is the only time the movie was better than the book for me.

One of my favourite movies of all time. I absolutely think that Angelina Jolie was brilliant in that role as she was in many others. I also enjoyed the book very much

I agree, wig aside, Jolie is great! I should watch it again sometime. The ending was kind of cheesy, but then again, nothing wrong telling a story where the person does heal and now has a positive outlook.

Thank you so much for this! I haven't read the book but absolutely love the movie one of my favs.. the only concern I have is Lisa being a sociopath. Lisa doesn't strike me as a true sociopath in the movie as she cared about Susana and kinda guided her in a way and helped Susana in her healing. Also in the end how she longed for affection and someone to care for her. Hopefully the book is better but Lisa's character is super flawed to me in the movie.

Yes! I didn't think she was an accurate portrayal of a sociopath. However I do think overall I liked the movie better than the book even with the changes that were made.

I just wanted to offer you some insight. I am a person that was diagnosed with ASPD. Sociopathy for one is not a diagnosis… it is a subcategory under ASPD. As a child I had a long history of oppositional and defiance disorder/conduct disorder. Because of character traits we knew before I was 18 that I was a sociopath. Secondly, every sociopath is going to behave a little bit differently, although we fit into a subcategory and usually portray a certain set of characteristics. A common misconception is that sociopaths will kill you, manipulate you and do awful things to you…. another misconception is we don’t know how to show affection or love. So anyone in the world, even people that do not have an ASPD diagnosis, can lie to you, steal from you, kill you, etc. Also, we may not be able to understand what a deep sense of empathy feels like, but we do feel very strong emotions. The way I show love is different from how someone that does not have ASPD shows love. If someone is important to us we will make sure they know it. We will show them love by being overly affectionate, buying gifts, and will make them feel like they’re the most important person in the world. It usually is because that person serves a purpose. However, most of us are cognitively aware of how our behaviour affects other people. We make a conscious effort not to do things that will have negative consequences for us. What you read about sociopaths is very different than what is true about sociopaths. Just like there is a spectrum for people that are depressed, there is also a spectrum for people with ASPD (sociopathy)… on one end you could look very much like Lisa, or on the other end you could be like me…a mom raising three children, with a husband that I’ve been married to for 12 years. I started getting therapy when I was six years old, and I started going through behaviour modification which helped me change my behaviour long term. It may not of changed the way I feel or don’t feel about things, but it helped me understand a little bit better how my actions affect other people… and it also helped me understand that I don’t want to suffer negative consequences for myself. When children that are showing signs of ASPD have no one assisting them in behaviour modification, you could very well end up like Lisa. It really just depends on what your life looks like. Sociopath or not a one size fits all…. I go to therapy and have many friends that are sociopaths. I know from hearing them speak about themselves, that although we all have the same diagnosis… we almost all live very different lives. Ask a sociopath… don’t base your opinion on the words of an armchair psychiatrist, or by what you see in the movies….

Thanks! I just watched the movie and have spent time in similar facilities...the suicide scene seemed very unrealistic to me...no way Daisy would kill herself as the result of Lisa being mean... Makes sense that Susanne was closer to Georgina than Lisa In Real Life. During my stays escape was unheard of...the nightly escape scenes really seemed fake to me in the movie. There were times where it would've been possible for me to escape because I can climb fences, but it would've led to me facing the streets being pursued with no resources. While I have a lot of aerobic fitness and could likely avoid being caught, it would've been very stressful. Daisy's story makes a ton more sense 10:30 to me now. That's how modern psych wards function. Constant return patients. 12:45 This is the scene that caused the most cognitive dissonance for me. I knew it was a based on a true story, but Lisa seemed to totally break character for the sake of the plot when she was verbally assaulting Daisy...for me it wasn't powerful at all because of how fake it came off as...the suicide made me sad emotionally because I realized it actually happened, but the way it was presented made me cringe. 13:30 yeah it was incredible, literally (not credible). "Mental illnesses" are patterns in behavior and thought. They aren't absolute rules. Sociopaths can have feelings, but they can effectively suppress them and continue socializing. Sociopaths are harmful when they project having a feeling in order to manipulate another person. The discrepancies you highlight make me appreciate cinema more I guess. It would've been pretty flat if it were the book interpreted verbatim. Other than the suicide scene being melodramatic and the feelgood BS, I give it 4/5 stars. With those sour notes, maybe 3/5.

Thanks for the video! I haven’t read the book but was always curious since I love the movie. I agree with the other comments - I didn’t get BPD vibes from Winonna’s character in the movie - more like a “wanna be”. And I didn’t get sociopath vibes from Angelina’s character either - just a trouble maker. I wonder if back then they were quicker to diagnose people and encourage mental hospitalization. PS. I had a Jared Leto thing too lol. It reignites when I watch his old movies like this.

@@WhytheBookWins also anti social personality disorder is such a misunderstood disorder because of how the media portrays it and the people affected by. The people who have it usually have it because of childhood trauma. So even if Lisa had it that doesn't automatically make her a bad person

You weren’t taken with the story yet you feel it needed to make a KZbin video about; to make yourself money? How dare you downplay women’s collective history of being abused by the people in their lives! This book and movies saved many young girls and for you to downplay it’s importance is beyond disrespectful to women who have dealt with and do deal with mental illness
