Thank you Joe for the fine demonstration and simplifying how to wire. Another little item I use is ribbon cable between tortoise and screw block that keeps everything uniform.

They also have a adapter that connects to the tortoise as well so you don’t have to solder to the tortoise itself

Hello Joe, Good video. My layout grew where i had to put separate utp panels at various locations. Before I operated it from a central command station in which i used the DPDT toggle switch. Now I have a switch 8 board in which I use the accessory button on my pro cab. My problem is I cant get my directional lights to work. Can I get my directional lights to work if i wired them to the tortoise?
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey Жыл бұрын
I would think so. If you wired the way I did it should work
@cowboyvalley
@cowboyvalley 5 жыл бұрын
All those wires are why I opted for using the snaps terminals on the Tortoise and the touch toggles for moving the points. It’s not much more money, but much, much easier to wire. ...Claude

Great video Joe! Where are you connecting the white wire under the turnout and are you cutting any wires or soldering anything for the frog also that DPDT toggle switch what are the specifications.
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey 4 жыл бұрын
The white wire is the frog wire that comes off the turnout. I run that wire to the terminal block so I can they run a wire from the other side of the terminal block to the green wire on the tortoise switch. I do solder wires to the frog, and the DPDT switch. I bought the DPDT switch off of amazon. They have many different types on there.

In truth, you do know how to understand how 8 cables are connected, I congratulate you. I have a lot of turtles and I have not been able to connect any because I don't know and few like you explain correctly. The cable 4 in which part of the frog you connect it?
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey

Any part of the frog should be good. I normally connect it to the middle of the frog.

@JoeG-firehousewhiskey

Yes you can, the speed of the tortoise depends on the volts. Less volts the slower it moves, or the more volts the faster it moves

Gave him a glass of water. :-0 That's great Joe. I had no idea that wiring a tortoise was this complicated. I'm going to have lot's of turnouts. Do you have to repeat this process for each turnout ? or will any of this work for multiple ones? I'm going to move over from DC soon. The pause in the video where you came in and offered additional explanation was really cool. very effective and attention grabbing. That was a strong part of the video. Brian

Just at the point where I'm starting to wire my turnouts. I've got Atlas turnout so I don't think I need to mess with the frog, but trying to make sense of the rest of the arrangement. Thanks for posting this. Seems like there are many options for powering/diodes/panel design I hadn't really considered before. You said your power is 5 volts. Is this a buss arraignment that runs around the table in the same way that the DCC power is fed? And what are you using to provide power? I thought 9 volts was the preferred voltage.
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have a separate bus for the tortoise switches. And you can run the tortoise switches at 3 volts 5 volts 9 volts or 12, it just depends on how fast you want it to move the less volts the slower it moves. Also, I'm using a wallboard to power them.
