As emotional as Defying Gravity is in the movie, it's even more so in the stage production. There is a song in part 2 (stage) "No good deeds go unpunished". It is also so amazing. Can't wait for that one.

I hear a lot of people make the comment of “would a green person be that shocking in a world with talking animals” but we only say that because talking animals is abnormal or unheard of in our world. In their world a talking lion or goat is as common as a pet dog, so yes, a green person would be shocking.
@SKWrites-142 күн бұрын
I think the point is that racism doesn't make any sense, and the intention of the musical is to get people to point out how much it doesn't make sense. It's easy to see it in a movie, and one would hope it makes people think about their own prejudices. If an alien came down to Earth, they'd wonder why we kill other people for their land or exploit and oppress others based on skin color. I'd hope they wouldn't think, well, it's understandable.
@iaaftltbfbbdildsm2 күн бұрын
Exactly my point!
@zammich36492 күн бұрын
It's very normal in our world for people to keep an animal like a dog, cat, a snake, or a fish or something as a pet, but if you saw somebody outside walking a snakedog or a cat with fins on a leash, you'd be pretty taken aback. It'd already be a big enough shock to see somebody walking a perfectly normal alligator, platypus, emu, or giant clam around town, and those animals all exist in the world with much greater numbers than people who are naturally green.
@jijitters2 күн бұрын
@@SKWrites-14 Both of you are 100% correct. The thesis posits both "we only think this is abnormal because we were born into a society where it doesn't exist" and additionally (as well acting as a conclusion), "isn't it so silly to think of her as odd for something as trivial as skin tone in a world where people are different in so many other ways?"
@zoephotoart2 күн бұрын
Not to mention lots of races are common in our world and yet there was/is still severe racism anyway.

Love this! Something to think about with the dance- it looks weird when Elphaba does it alone, because it's supposed to be a duet. She's never had anyone to dance with before, so she only knows her side. Once Glinda comes in, it makes more sense

Also, regarding the dance: Elphaba was mostly raised by animals. I’m pretty confident that Christopher Scott purposely made choreography that looks more like an animal dancing than a human because that’s Elphaba’s frame of reference.

50:34 this whole sequence is full of cameos. The wise ones are played by the original Broadway Elphaba and Glinda (Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth). 56:35 it makes sense the Wizard would target the animals. For one, a human would be more inclined to depersonalize non-humanoid figures, even if they do talk, and for two the guy has a circus background. Animal cruelty was part and parcel with his profession.
@booknerd_charlie2 күн бұрын
Exactly. He came from our world (notice what he’s chanting when he pretends to read the Grimerie), where talking animals are not part of society and animal cruelty is more prevalent. Throughout his regime, he introduces aspects of our society and technology into Oz. It helps him fool the citizens into thinking he’s a wizard and it allows him to slowly shape Oz society into his vision. When he needs to find a convenient scapegoat, he first uses the Animals, then eventually finds effective ways to use propaganda to make Elphaba public enemy #1
@drudle2 күн бұрын
And the Wizard is from Omaha, Nebraska. He's used to not only circus life but also farming. No doubt the majority of his views on animals are that they can, and should only, be used as disposable tools. Talking animals teaching poetry ain't it for him.

The best friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is iconic. It could have been so easy to rip them apart in a tropey way but the fact that their paths diverged (for not trivial reasons) but they still wish each other nothing but the best is more relatable. So many of the girls in high school adored this musical (my sister and I included) and it's not hard to see why. Cynthia and Ariana did the story a world of justice by continuing that spirit irl. You know the press would have LOVED to dig up and blow out of proportion some meaningless drama but they were a unit. Ariana said they even discussed their contracts together so they were equal and on the same page. I love that.

Re: your question about why Elphaba never considered her powers might be a "good thing" until arriving at Shiz - I think you maybe underestimate just how overwhelmingly influential a parent's mindset and attitude can be. It's clear that her father viewed her powers as an unambiguously BAD thing since the moment she was born - and took every opportunity to scold her and make her feel ashamed of them whenever they were used. Between that constant negative discouragement, her sister's embarrassment, and the bullying from other children, it's entirely possible that Madam Morrible was literally the FIRST person to ever frame her powers in a positive light. So even though it seems obvious to US that her powers aren't inherently evil, we're benefitting from an outside perspective. After all, think about all the kids in the real world who are made to feel ashamed of their natural talents and inclinations, all because their parents/environment viewed them negatively. Great reactions and discussion! :)

Not only it respect the original, keeping all the major plot points but it also claims it as its own in a lot of moments. It is quite impressive that this is part one, has the same lengh as the entire musical piece and yet you don't feel it drag or makes it weird by adding unecessary things. Talking animals is just a regular thing that they see everyday so it's not weird to the Ozians, but a green person has never been seen before so they all freak out. The only person in the movie who would think talking animals is weird is the Wizard since he comes from Earth (Omaha), so that's why they're an easy target to him. The talking animals are the only friends Elpheba has ever had her entire life so she probably feels a sense of duty and loyalty to save them.

I loved this movie so much, in the beginning when we see the glimpse of the dance you can see how that resonates with Galinda, and they said when she sings in a high tone she's being insincere..the first song about being happy that Elphaba is dead she sang the highest tone, and her facial expressions of pain and sadness. Also how Galinda’s smiles when she’s starts telling the story sharing her memories. The cape was basically Elphaba's hair toss. And at the end when the guards are singing "look at her she's wicked k*ll her" Galinda sings "I hope your happy" and how Elphaba flys into the light and Galinda walks into the darkness. It makes me sad that for both woman they where each others first true friend.

This was a MASSIVE undertaking, and he made a movie that moved, then soared. A 2 hour and 45 minute film that flies by. Every person I know who has seen it, and every reactor who has reacted to it, has really liked or loved it, even the ones who don't normally like musicals. That's almost unheard of. What more can you expect from a director? Especially when they nominated it for Best Picture. 😰

If you rewatch the beginning after seeing the movie all the way through you can tell that Glinda's balancing her own heartache about Elphaba's death with her/Glinda's having to keep a public perception of being against her. Had to pause to answer your question... Hell yes, those nails get in the way! 😂 I had them for a few months and gave up. They were over and inch long, which is short on the grand scheme of claw-like nails. Everything from typing to wiping (yes, you read that correctly) was more difficult and, on some occasions, painful. I still have long nails, but don't let them get more than 1/2 inch. Cynthia Erivo rocks some elegant claws IRL. Some can't, some can. I just couldn't. 😂

Don’t forget - before Dorothy kills Elphaba she has to drop a house on her baby sister.

Since you mentioned the drummer a few times. The original drummer who developed the drums was Gary Seligson. (Master broadway / theatre pit drummer.) The movie drums are a bit different to the stage show but they are essentially the same.
