Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft

Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft

3 жыл бұрын

Ovens heads back into the Rocky Mountain Bush for some freezing solo overnight camping in his truck, cooking lasagna on the campfire, before testing the heating power of hot rocks, AND grilling a steak on the searing stones INSIDE the vehicle!
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

You've never cooked on rocks before? Yeesh, I did that in boy scouts in the 80's, it's not some magical knowledge you just work with what you have. No big pan or griddle? Find a big flat rock and now you have one! And not to be mean but it doesn't sound like you spent a lot of time in the bush it sounds like you spent time camping with a lot of camping gear and not roughing it at all.

Sweat lodge maybe? It's warm place but different to a Sauna, Saunas are Finnish invention and they are heated over 200°F before going in and the water is thrown on the rock multiple times and you stay in maybe from 15min to an hour then come out to chill and then go back, Sweat logs usually stayed under 100-120°F and they stayed there for hours.

I've learned so much from Greg's channel. I've been a fan for a few years and picked up so much from him. I did get a backpack about a year ago and stuffed it with things he utilizes though nothing at all the things he has. Recently, we was hit with a record winter storm here in Texas. We had capped off our fireplace a year ago because honestly here in Texas it was rarely used. So prior to the winter storm, I removed the cap as I knew the possibility of loosing electric was a high possibility. I filled up the bathtub with water as well. I got my backpack out of the truck and placed it in the house and waited for the storm to hit. Well, it hit. No water, no electric and that unsettling feeling sat in. What do we do now? I utilized what I have learned from watching Greg's channel. Making a fire isn't impossible but to be honest, but takes a minute to learn to use a fire starter. Yep, I had one in my backpack! Thank you, Greg! Anyway, I had a nice fire going and maintained. I cooked, heated water and made some awesome campfire coffee in the fireplace. Honestly, I really don't think we'd had been very successful had I not been prepared from watching this channel. We'd had to call for help as so many others had done. My wife was impressed with the knowledge I picked up watching this channel and loved the food! Also, heating rocks work! We used one BIG ROCK to heat the bathroom. It lasted a few hours, but didn't mind reheating it and placing in the bathroom when needed. Again, I don't have a quarter of the survival equipment you have, but I did get the bare minimum and it got us through this record storm. Thank you, Greg, for sharing your skills with the world. Much respect to you, brother.

I watched "The Angry Astonault" before this video. His subject was about who should be the first settlers on Mars. He stressed that there should be at least two people that know how to survive when nothing is working as it was designed to. My first thought was, Greg Ovens fits that bill. Ready to go to Mars, Greg?

I must say your the Best, I admire your way of doing things, the old fashioned way. I was brought up & raised in Canada & we lived off the land the old fashioned way, living of the grid & learned so much, moved here to the Usa & I continue to live the old fashioned way, Love it, smiling. I can honestly say, I feel Free, blessed to wake up every day to enjoy Nature, and with every error I've learned so much & also teaches me strength & so Bless with the outdoors & the joy it has giving me for all these years. Your Truly a inspiration & keep the good Videos ❤️
