I know the narrative has been "Thank God Cynthia and Ari were there to interject and save the movie" but it feels more like "how wonderful he isn't a fragile ego-ed, totalitarian director and instead has a collaborative perspective, picking the better ideas even if it weren't his".

@@firewheels90 Beings of evolved consciousness are like this. I"m not religious, but I listen to many various wisdom and consciousness "teachers". The Dali Lama, wherever he stays, he stops and talks to all the hotel staff, maids, service people and treats them just as highly as he does world dignitaries. I don't think people who are great artists at the level of Cynthia get there thru a single life time; from her treatment and care of others, her attention to very fine minute detail, she seems to be a being of heightened consciousness for sure...thank you for sharing! I love that you are sharing the dichotomy between passive and active “wickedness.” I am a mitigation specialist who works with the indigent population accused of crimes, some very serious and violent accusations. And working with these humans and helping them find themselves again, and analyze where are places that I was forced into wickedness and where along the way did I abandon myself and begin to choose that wickedness is so important. I can hold space for the responsibility I take for my actions, while recognizing and forgiving those who have caused me harm as well. Thank you for using art to so beautifully reflect the human experience.

I absolutely LOVED that she gave Elphaba a strong sense of self and identity. It didn't matter what anyone else thought, she knew who she was. And the little details like having jewelry, and well-tailored clothes and manicured nails and the poise and grace and beauty...spoke to still being a part of and belonging in that world and society eventhough she was so very different, physically.

Given how much work goes into a single day of this movie, let alone a week, I wish they had made a week in the life series from Cynthia, Ari, Jon Chu and choreographer and costume designer. We hear ABOUT LONG days but I don’t think people who don’t work in the industry would comprehend how exhausting the process of making a movie like this is for the crew ans the cast. I don’t know how they kept their energy up...they aren't young kids but grown women and men. Amazing result but I want more interviews like this for the future generations to study.

It brought tears to my eyes as Jon mentioned his story of the haunted house for the other grades he was a part of. I myself had the same opportunity when I was in fifth grade except mine wasn’t as big of a success It just reminded me of my own experience with our haunted house. I had loved watching all different shows and movies and I wanted so badly to be a part of all the action I was witnessing. I developed such a love for it and it was an obsession for me as kid to be doing sing and dance alongs and being introduced to broadway. I ended up getting picked to be included in our after school Halloween haunted house when I was in fifth grade. I was going to be one of two girls who held and waved balloons up and down very creepily in a corner. We had to have our hair covering our face and wearing all black and I practiced that little part for weeks making sure every angle was perfect. My mom was a single mom trying to provide for me but she lacked in the area of actually knowing me and the things I enjoyed. When I first told her they wanted me in it and how excited I was for the show and that she could come and see me do it, she brushed me off and didn’t take me seriously when I told her I wanted to be a part of it. As a matter of fact if I remember correctly she almost didn’t let me be a part of it because she’d have to pick me up later than usual. I remember us definitely arguing about it and I pushed so hard for her to let me and she eventually gave in and I was very grateful for that. The main issue though was since it was a haunted house we needed all black clothing. The day prior I had been practicing in my school clothes and until that same night before the first show; I hadn’t noticed I didn’t have an all black shirt. I begged my mom to take me to the store quickly that night or if she had one it could just be worn as a dress but she didn’t. She didn’t take me to the store either and I vividly remember having a breakdown. I was a complete mess rummaging through every drawer because it just wasn’t going to be perfect without a full black outfit and I was so upset. The day of the first show I ended up having to wear a high school musical shirt that was black and they almost didn’t let me be in it because of the print on the front (Now that im remembering this story this could’ve been avoided had I just worn the shirt backwards but nobody brought up that idea and I didn’t think of it myself so bummer). I started sobbing when they were upset with me about the shirt because I too myself was also devastated. They had someone else sit in for me while everyone searched for a black shirt and they couldn’t find one (yelling at little me like “GIRL FLIP THE DAMN SHIRT INSIDE OUT). Out of pity they let me hold the balloon for the last 10 minutes but when I tell you just those 10 minutes alone changed my life. I remember every reaction we got from the last few people coming through(some made fun of my high school musical shirt but that’s besides the point.) The screams from the other jump scares and just the ambience of actually being a part of the show was a feeling I’d never forget. Ever since then I’ve been heavily obsessed with theater and writing fantasy and it’s my dream to be in the stage scene and just create beautiful experiences . I had so much passion but I also a struggling mother who was fighting her own demons and she didn’t realize I was starting to develop my own at such a young age. In a way she did hold me back. I ended up not really doing any theater throughout middle school because I felt mostly disillusioned and unsupported. In high school I took a drama class that will forever sit with me and it enabled that love I had always had with this industry. I auditioned for every play (they did wicked and I was a munchkin!!!) and I enjoyed every second of that class to its full extent. In fact in 10th grade during that theater class we also had a haunted house. It was a lot more elaborate and was not going to be on a stage but it would be set up in the hallway of the theater class which was really long and winded. I auditioned for a role but instead they needed me for set production so I was mostly behind the scenes in this one. Still every night at set up I felt so enamored with producing and being a part of it, it felt like home being a part of the troupe. It felt like little me was alive and thriving. Hearing Jon’s story of his own haunted house literally brought the memory back from the graveyard for me of my own experience and I JUST stopped sobbing because of it(it’s been like 40 minutes since I started.) As a now 25 year old I regret letting those dreams fizzle the way they did. I wish I had more support and more encouragement to keep going and it’s something I still currently struggle with. I’m currently in the process of writing multiple plays and fantasy books which are all very underdeveloped but I will be my own voice this time. I want to create beautiful stories and I don’t want to be limited by anything anymore. I want to fully captivate my creative essence and give justice to the little girl in me who was drowned out by all the noise. Wicked has not only awaken the emotions of the past for me but has given me so much hope for what I can do in the future and I will hold that in my soul till the end for good. Thank you for reading this far if you have 🫰🏻

This is the AMOUNT of detail I really would have wished this was added to the Live Action Beauty and the Beast (and other live action remakes that Disney made, I have a select few that they were good) Disney has great stories but its about how you can uplift the story without making it feel off or "modern" just because. you can tell at least from the directors and actors in 'Wicked' really cared for the story. they really appreciated and/or related to the characters to tell their version of the character that gives another dimension of the story. I truly believe that if Disney takes a page from Wicked the can have successful live action boots over and over and over again. For Instance Beauty and the Beast's Belle didn't feel like Belle the added plot about her wanting to know about her mom wasn't fitting well -- the Beast (Prince Adam) didn't really have the greatest character development throughout the movie like the animation did. there's so many things that felt like its OG predecessor but there were A LOT of moments where things were added that didn't fit the narrative of the story.

Nobody could've played Elphaba the way Cynthia did. I did a deep dive into everything Wicked (my fav was a Korean interview with the cast after the Australian premiere), watching EVERYTHING leading up to the American premiere. I watched Cyn in "Harriet" as Harriet Tubman. She also played Celie in 'The Color Purple". So she has experience playing ugly and playing a slave. Plus, she's a queer black woman so she has life experience being oppressed and receiving hate and anger because of the color of her skin. And we have Jon to thank for casting Cynthia, a Brown Being, in the lead and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. Had the director been white, the film would've been LOUSY with white actors. A white Elphaba, a white little Elphaba and a white Madame Morrible and white background actors. Just white, white, white. Like the Broadway musical. So mahalo Jon, for casting the film the way you did. I feel seen and represented. Congratulations. You did that. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It's interesting to hear Cynthia's words on Elphi sacrificing her dream of being degreenified to save the animals. I thought by that point in the film, she'd already found a sense of acceptance in herself and saving the animals was her new desire. I knew her dream was to fit in and that she knew her green skin is what's keeping that from happening, but I always though she herself never had a problem with being green. Like if nobody treated her differently, she wouldn't care to change it.

I honestly kinda had that interpretation too. Not that she never wanted to stop being green but that she had finally gotten enough love (not despite but because of her difference) at the ozdust scene that she was willing to give up the hope that maybe her family would finally see her differently without green skin.
@deanna.forbes
@deanna.forbes 29 күн бұрын
I'm so glad you brought this up! I think that in the Wizard and I, she clearly tells us that what she wants is to be de-greenified, but it had always felt like an impossibility. She believes that the wizard knows the desires of her heart and that HE would bring it up without her having to ask for it. So when she meets him and his version of her is still green? Ugh, I'm crying as I type this... She is devastated. Either he doesn't know the desires of her heart or being de-greenified IS too much to ask for. In that moment her dream dies and she switches her ask to the plight of the Animals. Which is very selfless in that moment but I think she was heartbroken.

It was soo refreshing to watch this interview. I like the short and fun interviews through other channels but this one definitely allows us to hang out with the lead actress and the director satisfyingly. Telling their own lives starting from childhood, speaking about their childhood dreams, telling the moments made them change... I love Cynthia is expressing her synesthesia and the view she sees on Elfie. And I loved when Jon said "when you put a vision, people are eager to follow you." is such an inspiring sentence. Every info they shared on this interview is delightful. Hope we see more genuine talks in the entertaintment industry. And hope we see Cynthia and Jon more throughout their careers. 💚

Wow this is the first interview with Cynthia that feels real to me after the chaos/circus of her interviews with Ariana. I related deeply to some things she said and I'm seeing her in a different light now.
