The whole reason everything was able to be put together so well and be so cohesive and good across all departments (costume design, production design, performances, score, VFX, etc) is because of Jon M Chu. I think he deserves a Best Director nomination for adapting this so well. Also visually I thought it was actually pretty good. Some of the shots they got, specifically in the opening and dancing through life with the ladders, were really well done on the part of the cinematographer and camera operators. Sometimes the back lighting was a bit much but I do think it deserves to be in consideration for best cinematography. Great review as usual!

I accidentally saw the film in 3D, and I feel like it improved the visuals a lot. Not because of the 3D itself, nobody cares about that. It’s just that the 3D glasses have a bit of a dark blue tint to them, which helps cut down on the glare and makes everything feel more cinematic. And I kept swapping between wearing and not wearing those 3D glasses just to compare it with the intended lighting of the film, eventually deciding that the 3D was better.

I think especially when we get to the Emerald City a lot more POP would've put the film at a 10/10 for me but it wasn't off-putting. I have more of a nitpick with the framing (to me it looks like a lot of the film was shot to perfectly crop to 9:16 for short-form promo and I noticed it enough to knock down the rating) but like with you, the good elements still wowed me more than the nitpicks bothered me. I am curious about how they're going to tackle Act II. I would argue the songs are WAY stronger so I'm hopeful that next year the plot will have as much time to breathe and expand as it did this time.

As someone who hasn’t seen either the musical, or the movie, I was curious about your opinion since you’re a musical theatre guy, and how adaptations have been. Glad to hear it’s good. I can only imagine the lighting is them wanting to mimic what it looked like for the actors in the original Wizard of Oz

I just hope they fixed her girl boss delivery of "It's the wizard who should be afraid of me" - the one in the trailer kind of blew me off.

I wasn't particularly looking forward to this because of the recent track record of stage-to-film adaptations. But this gives me hope! Now I'm actually looking forward to it!

I took a lot of space with this movie and really help power with it

Pretty much agree with everything you said, i'm really hoping they took the chance to improve on the second act, specially considering it is like 1 hour long on stage. They can double the run time and make the story much more coherent. They even confirmed they added new songs in the second act so let's hope for the best!

Agreed about the pacing! I was floored it didn’t drag for me and didn’t feel like they unnecessarily added scenes. I went into Wicked very doubtful and walked out incredibly impressed. So now I’m hopeful they’ll fix Act II.

My one critique is the lighting as well especially when Fiyero and Elphie were in the forest like even in the theater you could barley see it was so dark

The moment you started showing scenes from Cats my dogs started going bananas I'm gonna presume it's because they also hate the movie adaptation

Remember that Wicked was supposed to come out in December 2019 but Universal Pictures swapped that with Cats as Cats was ready for production whereas Wicked was still searching for writers, stars, and the rest of the film crews (Stephen Daldry signed on as director but the movie had a very slow development under his belt whereas Tom Hooper fast tracked Cats as he finished the script way earlier). Be glad that Wicked took it's time properly to developed it's production that ended up being a great movie even if it's still Part 1 but atleast, it's already a huge promising start

I didn’t have an issue with the lighting in this movie, I think this is a 10/10 film by itself, let alone an excellent adaptation

i consider this a great adaptaation and i am shocked by how good it is. i missed musicals like this

I'm sure I won't be the first or last person to mention this, but regarding the entire cast being people who can sing except for Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh: Jeff Goldblum has a jazz band!

I feared that Universal was going to make another bad musical after Dear Evan Hansen and Cats didn’t do well (which our Crab Guy KZbinr didn’t like as well)!! But fortunately they didn’t screw up this time!!

I've seen plenty of reviews for the movie that just repeated what we all kinda thought the movie was going to be - bloated, uninspired, shoddy, etc. This is the first review I've seen that's actually positive about the movie, and kinda makes me want to go see it in theatres now!

Im a petty motherfucker. The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite films and I can not ignore just how bad Wicked looks. The original movie still looks so vibrant and alive and Wicked looks like any other Disney liveaction film

Can someone just upload the entire movie but up the saturation a bit so the colours are more vivid cry

My 2 biggest hopes for part 2 is that they: 1. Hire a new color grading team 2. Make some pretty big changes to the structure of act 2 so that they can hit all the necessary beats but have the beats make more sense and flow better as a story

I wasn’t not surprised that Ariana acted well in this movie, she was on broadway after all
