I think the themes go a lot deeper when you look below the surface. The power of speech and propaganda, giving people a common enemy to unify them under a dictator, silencing dissenting voices, the show has a lot to say even just in the first half. Here are non-spoiler lines from the second that really show what I mean: "The truth is not a thing of fact or reason, the truth is just what everyone agrees on... There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities, So we act as though they don't exist"

Good movie! The book is Great. Dude with the sweater is right.. its way Deeper than what you think. You really didn't get the message.. its more to it than just one aspect. 💯

I agree with this comment. Some people reduce things to the simplest level and then pronounce them shallow. It depends on life experience and the brain's wiring to have the implications and connections resonate with the action. Also, maybe the surety of pronouncing the theme as for toddlers says a lot about the reviewers' sensitivities--considering the future of the world we find ourselves in today.

Fair review you guys! Also a novice to the Wicked world and enjoyed it- songs were bangers. The stuff about fascism is a bit surface level but fair point a lot of people don’t seem to get it! Agreed it ended as it got interesting but thats Part 1s for ya. Only other thing was the amount of ‘prequel-ing’ got absurd. Does everything need an origin story?! 😂

Guillermo del Toro is a good shout! you know, although this is not strictly a horror movie, as a massive Wicked fan and a horror fan I LOVED horror nods like the "Wicker Witch" they built to burn her at the beginning; I'll be including this movie in my favourite horror and horror-adjacent movies of the year

Visually, the film looked murky, and didn't show the sets and colour palette to their advantage.

What I found annoying (and they kept doing this) was that they interjected scenes of dialogue into the musical numbers. I saw Wicked on stage and there were parts where dialogue was incorporated into the musical numbers; the only difference is, the movie stretched out those dialogue scenes with reaction shots which made the dialogue in the musical sequences even longer. I just wanted to hear the music without dialogue interruption or exposition - it just made the musical numbers dip in energy. This is evident in the "Dancing Through Life" number. I didn't keep time but that sequence was at least 15 minutes long and it didn't need to be. Other than that I LOVED THE MOVIE! I'm gonna watch it again soon!
