Sing or Stay Quiet?
Wicked Movie Sparks Debate
Go to the cinema almost anywhere in the world, and the rules are clear - no talking, keep your phone silent, don’t film the movie, and so on.
But what about singing?
November saw the release of Wicked, a movie adaptation of the popular Broadway musical.
The musical has been seen by over 65 million people in 16 countries since it first opened in 2003. The movie uses the same songs from the original show, including massive hits like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.”
For musical theater fans, Wicked may be the most eagerly awaited movie musical of the 21st century. But opinions are split on whether it’s okay to sing along during the movie.
“I’m not paying to hear you sing,” TikTok user Munashe Chinyanganya said in a video that has been liked over 160,000 times. Others argue that the same rules should apply as when attending a live show.
However, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who stars in Disney's Moana 2, says fans should feel free to sing if they want.
“Sing! You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you're watching a musical - go ahead, sing,” he told BBC News.
Some theaters, like AMC Theatres in the U.S., have made “no singing” an official rule. In a short video played before the Wicked movie, the company says: “At AMC Theatres, silence is golden.”
Ryan Noonan, a representative for AMC, explained that the rule is meant to ensure the movie experience remains enjoyable for everyone.
For those who can’t resist, some theaters have said they’ll offer "sing-along" showings of Wicked later in the year, where fans will be encouraged to sing along.
Wicked had the biggest-ever opening for a movie adaptation of a Broadway musical, earning $114 million in North America during its opening weekend.
