Hello wes and Kate. I enjoy your videos. I watch a lot of sailing videos. All the information they put out is great, but what I enjoy most is the sailing part. Getting to see the Atlantic and different ports and the people. Good job keep the videos coming. Happy sailing. 😎

Hey, good to see your proceeding north to your destination. What did you guys do about the rudder shaft slop? In the last vid. comments you made note that you bought a repair kit and washers, did you get it squared away? Also, I'm sorry you didn't have any NYC east river and 'Hells gate" footage, that cant get pretty gnarly if you catch the tides wrong. Anyway, cheers.

We just hauled her out and were dropping the rudder, getting rid of the growth whatever is in the tube and waxing the shaft and applying the epoxy kit. Taking care of it now!

Wicked Salty, I could be doing this trip soon from Hampton VA. back home to the Hudson River ( Haverstraw Bay). Maybe you can help me. Due to it being a "new to me boat" I may have to avoid the outside passage and go up the entire Chesapeake Bay from Hampton VA. , C&D, down the deleware to Cape May and then to Atlantic City. If I can include Barnegate after Atlantic City, this would make the passage much better. Is Barnegate bay a better option than Manasquan inlet??? Is a draft of 4'10" an issue entering the Barnegate bay??? hELp :/
@WickedSalty6 жыл бұрын
Barnegat is not that bad just follow the marks and favor that starboard side once you are in the breakwater. If its rough out I would watch out for opposing current and wind direction, I feel it was a mild day leaving but the wind was against us riding out with the current and the waves got steep and short and was hectic on shoaling but not a problem. We've been through on Parity which was a 5' 7" draft and now whisper 4' 10" we have not been to manesquan so I cannot say much on it
@wkw40956 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I will look at active captain too although it's not as good as it was. Reading reviews and forums can make Barnegate sound scary! Don't you have a 3'10" draft on your Catalina 30???
@unclebob67286 жыл бұрын
Re: 4'10" Draft on Barnegat Bay. You should be alright, if you understand and pay attention to the markers and stay in the sometimes narrow channels. The section on the north end between the Mantaloking Bridge and Bay Head can shoal up to under 5'. The bottom is generally mud or sand and is very forgiving. a grounding rarely does any damage, just back out. Oyster Creek Channel can be intimidating in low visibility when you can't see the next mark. Pre GPS I would wait at a channel marker and follow a big sport fisherman to the next marker. Entering Mansquan inlet can be dangerous in heavy weather esp. during weather from the NE. Both Barnegat and Manesquan can be turbulent with washing machine seas when the wind and tide oppose. The Manesquan railroad bridge is very narrow and can be scary when the boat traffic is heavy and the current sweeping you into it. Good Luck on your cruise!
@chrisobrien51034 жыл бұрын
I just did a run from Ocean City NJ to Barnegat Bay in October 2019. I went from OC to AC outside and then ducked in through the AC inlet when it got choppy/unpleasant. The ICW from AC to Barnegat Bay (to Oyster Creek channel) was a pleasure (vs going head on wind in ocean!). I have C30 tall rig/old shoal keel with a 4'6" draft and 48 foot mast/antenna and had no issues with bridge clearances or groundings. Stay in the channel and you will be fine. Active captain was useful. I also called towboatus (local) and they were very helpful in giving advice on some specific markers and confirming that part of the ICW would be fine for a C30. BTW-love the wicked salty videos-they are really helpful and entertaining.
