Interestingly, since you mentioned that they have the "beginnings of a marine living monitor lizard", the giant Mosasaurus is considered to belong to a sister clade to monitor lizards. There is a bit of debate about whether they are actually closer to monitor lizards or snakes however they still likely all shared a common ancestor. So if these little guys were given a few million years they could return to the ocean as giants.
