Here's some trivia that may help. These engine suffer from localised overheating on the exhaust side of the head. It's commonly caused by a partially blocked catalytic converter. The restricted exhaust flow increases the exhaust temperature considerably and that heat is focused around the exhaust port area.Often people will have symptoms of the problem,poor performance,high fuel economy and they'll attribute it to the vehicle being old or the engine is just 'tired'. I've seen many cases where people have replaced the head gasket and head, fitted a premium quality gasket and new bolts only to have another gasket failure with in 12 months. Of coarse people tend to blame the repairer or the people the service the head but in many cases it's their own vehicles faulty accessories that have caused the failure.

Does the localised overheating have anything to do with the fact that the head gaskets on the exhaust side have no holes in them where the water jacket is, effectively creating a pool of hot water in this area? Someone has tapped the water jacket near the back spark plug on my second hand replacement EL Falcon motor which flows to the overflow bottle thus helping the water to circulate at the back of the head.

Great video mate you just helped me fix my oil leaks, keep up the good work... BTW using a paint marker and dabbing the bolt and surface instead of trying to turn the ratchet 90 degrees in one turn makes torque turning much less painful.

There is a crossover year/month when it comes to the ED model falcons. September 1993. Anything before this is the early production motor, and anything after is the late production ( makes sense i gues). There is a difference in the gasket set, one of which has a cork gasket for the top of the timing cover, the other is a rubber gasket like this one. Nice of ford to include the build month and year on the frame tags so you can clarify which set you need.

good job on that, a pneumatic die grinder with a fine grit polisher attachment works wonders too!!

While im here, im guessing theres no issues with the cam chain dropping off the crank and idler sprokets when its removed from the camshaft as long as its tied to the cam sprocket like in the video? I only ask as im removing the head from wifeys ED tomorrow and its the only thing thats bugging me a bit

the manifold to downpipe studs i had to undo from under the car, so it wasn't fun lol . i have done a few heads in my time, the first 2 were not that easy(i had no help at all the first head gasket and i was 16, it did run okay though when i was done, it was an injected xf falcon).

No it is not essential so long as you do not rotate the cam gear relative to the crankshaft

thanks mate:):):) glad you liked the vid. nah, i don't really care if ppl don't like the way i do things; but i prefer a vid response over a snipe because they don't like something(constructive criticism or there is a faster easier way is welcomed). the cable tie will be me and youtube's little secret lol . i was very much in need of a drink :):):):)

as per title, YES I DROPPED A F&%KING CABLE TIE INTO THE TIMING CASE!!! IT WILL BE OKAY(IT'S ONLY A VERY SHORT CABLE TIE), SO DON'T CARRY ON ABOUT IT. IF YOU HAD DROPPED SOMETHING METAL INTO THE T/CASE, THEN IT WOULD BE A VERY BIG PROBLEM(which would require a lot of dis-assembly)!!! no i didn't clean all the carbon off the pistons; it won't make any difference weather the pistons are mirror polished and carbon free or not

I have watched a lot of EricTheCarGuy vids, he finds a bunji cable handy for holding back wires/cables and other nusance bits, perhaps a thought for future repairs :-) I would imagine an old big speaker magnet could be handy for stopping your bolts getting away, you can buy a magnetic dish but why bother when there is allways a dead speaker around :-) Im sure the engine will be spot on, i beleive in your ability :-)

shouldnt need any sealant on a new rubber gasket, depending on your surface preparation. also, silicon may damage the rubber, depending on their compositions.

Great video. Cheers. So, a question. Does the whole head need to come off to refit a new seal at the front of timing chain gear? I have a slow oil leak there, and thought it was the head gasket, but makes more sense now that it’s just that seal you first put in. Cheers!
@wickedxe
@wickedxe 6 жыл бұрын
You can do the T/case seals and gaskets without removing the head by removing the sump. But there again I think you can't remove the T/case without removing the sump (I can't remember why only that something was in the way with the sump on). If the oil leak is not bothering you much you could leave it; otherwise it is better to do all the gaskets and seals at the same time as if one is buggered they are probably all buggered (If you do remove the T/case it is also a good idea to replace the timing chain guides).

Like your videos! One question: is it possible for the timing chain to slip a tooth down below while it's not connected to the camshaft?

g'day mate! i diagnosed my timing chain tensioner plug leaking in my 99 AU fairlane VCT, i made a bit of a mistake by not releasing the tension on the tensioner before i undid the plug, due to a lack of experience, what would you recommend me to do to fix my mistake?

Smashing, i enjoyed that :-) You still seem angry with what people might say about the way you did the job, you didnt say you were the best head gasket replacer in the world, i thought you did a cracking job :-) And as far as the tiny bit of cable tie is concerned, im sure you could remove the sump and remove it if you were worryed, as you said it will just sit in the oil. I can pick fault with your lack of drinking, keeps the brain inflated he he :-)
