I’m from New Zealand. Live in Canada now. We idolize tuatara back home and there are many captive breeding programs and also breeding programs on pest free islands off the coast. I worked with the department of conservation and I think it’s great you can’t own them or New Zealand ships them out. On the other side of that is that we can’t own any lizards or snakes as pets or bring anything into the country. I’m in Canada now so your videos really help with getting into the hobby. Thanks.

I've already given Adam the "sob story" of living on a quarantined island. On Tasmania we have 3 snakes, all venomous (2 very highly), 14 skinks and one lizard species. We would need a permit to keep any of them, or even a tree frog. Importation of native animals even from the mainland is prohibited.

I absolutely sympathise with your Tuatara obsession. Having seen one in a David Attenborough documentary when I was quite small, I just cannot get over the gambit they have had to go through to make it through to the modern day, and as a grown man, seeing them in Chester Zoo and Berlin Zoo, I got genuinely giddy each time. One day, I shall get to Aotearoa and see them scurrying free in a sanctuary... PS - Not sure if it was a cut created the impression that you said this, but Aldabra tortoises are not from the Galapagos. Aldabra is in the Seychelles.

Yes, I'm in my late 30's and hope to adopt a Russian Tortoise once I get a bigger place, so most likely wont get one until I'm in my 40s. I don't have children to leave it to, so unless I adopt one that is already 20+ years old, I'm going to have find a way to provide for it after I'm gone. Currently have a 15 year old leopard gecko and 14 year old common pleco.
@xanderxue58642 жыл бұрын
There seems to be a growing notion that even Russian tortoises can surpass 100, even though older care guides pretty much all pegged their lifespan at around 40; I happen to have a Russian, so that's the species I research most about, but I think this probably applies to all tortoises, that is they all probably have the capacity to outlive any of us. So this has definitely been a thought of mine, but luckily I have 2.9 human children and have been indoctrinating all of them to love animals, so the non-humans will probably be fine :-D.

I saw Henry the Tuatara in the Invercargil Museum when he was 111 years old. I know he was years older than that when he fathered offspring (they finally found he had a tumor on his genitals, which had made him hostile to breeding previously, understandably so). They only breathe about once a minute when resting. They have a vestigial third eye thing happening, that's also very cool.

However, as of recent, he doesn’t seem to be as active as before. Idk if it’s that I’m just not at his cage at the right time, but during the night, he only seems to stay on one branch, whereas before he would move around and come to the cage door. He also doesn’t seem to want to eat as much. I know he still moves around in the evening at least a little, as he leaves from his day hiding spot to a branch across the cage. I just wanted to ask if there might be something wrong with him. He’s kept in an 18 x 18 x 18 Exo terra, bioactive, and fed on Pangea, Repashy, and occasionally crickets or dubias
