The zoo I volunteer at keeps nine reptile species on display, and another nine behind the scenes we use as ambassadors. Of those, we keep six of the eighteen species in mixed species setups: - our blood python and red tailed Ratsnake live together in a huge tank in our Rainforest Building. - in the Rainforest building, two Red-footed Tortoises live in a large Aviary with a variety of birds, including Victorian Crowned pigeons, fruit doves, crested wood partridges, ringed teals, sunbittern, purple glossy starlings, and more. - in our education department, a southeast Asian Box turtle and eastern Box Turtle share the same exhibit. - our rescued sulcata tortoise lives in our Kangaroo Yard- along with two red kangaroos and an emu. It may seem like an unconventional choice, but it gives the Tortoise a large amount of land and none of the species pose a risk to each other, despite not occurring on the same continents.

Just one thing, newts and salamanders are very much closely related. In fact, newts are salamanders. There are salamanders that aren't newts but all newts are salamanders. Axolotls and spanish newts aren't particularly closely related but they're both salamanders. It's a great video, I'd like to see the second part.

I have an extra tank for snails to feed him. It just keeps plants, a few frogs, and SNAILS. Once every couple weeks I dump 1/8 cup of live snails into his tank and he has them eaten by the end of the day. He will hunt for hours till he has gobbled every one of them up.

Since birds are also reptile, I do have a combination. Poultry and big tortoises do good together as well in a large area. Chicken, duck and geese will most likely leave a big tortoise alone as they roam the yard together. However, you have to make sure your tortoises won’t get all their food eaten by the much quicker birds, so perhaps feeding them in separate pen or only allowing the birds to enter tortoises’ area at specific time of day.

@vivalavivarium
@vivalavivarium 3 жыл бұрын
Sooooooo, I promise I know what im doing, but I've been experimenting with cohab vivariums pretty much my whole herpetological career. I ALWAYS research heavilly and care for the species individually first, way too many factors to not take this is steps for ANY cohab project in my opinion. But the only death I ever have had what of a long-tailed lizard who was eaten by a whites tree frog, who then threw it back up. People don't realize how insane of predators frogs are ecologically and morphologically. My idea was that the anoles I had in with the frogs weren't getting eaten so maybe the long tails wont either, well the while the long tails were quick even to get their body out the way the frog would just catch the tail. I of course kept the other long tails in the enclosure to see why they got caught and eventually saw two they had their tails missing, so idk why the one that died didn't drop his tail but the others were able to get away tailless. to anyone trying this: 1. heat/temp: just make sure you can accommodate a space in the enclosure that fit the requirements of each species that covers a large enough space that you would've kept that specific species by itself. 2. just be smart and don't push it too much: like don't get any sort of notoriously aggressive/defensive or territorial animal. I've been offered to work with tokay's three different times and their just isn't anything suggesting that it would work out. 3. SIZE, SIZE, SIZE: in theory, virtually all animals can be kept together if given enough size. think about it, we all live in one giant vivarium called earth, also (I would never really do this) technically iguanas live with green anoles and alligators. So, if you are planning on doing this make sure you go BIG, and i mean big. i kept my first successful cohab of green anoles, brown anoles, long tailed lizards, fire bellied toads, green tree frogs, and small crested geckos in a 4ft, 3ft, 5ft vivarium. 4. establish the smaller species first 5. diurnal vs nocturnal: this one is surprisingly effective. If everyone is fed and the smaller species is non active during the bigger species time then no reason to waste energy attacking the other species. remember, animals don't WANT to fight they would prefer never having to waste energy on food or territory ever, so they wont go out of their way to do that. 6. arboreal vs terrestrial vs fossorial vs aquatic: again surprisingly effective for pretty much the same reasons as diurnal vs nocturnal. I've always wanted to do a youtube channel and talk abut these things, but the reptile community is just so toxic (especially here in saint louis) and I was literally afraid to do it, despite working at the best reptile store in Missouri and being offered a job at the stl zoo herpetarium. The way you go about your videos with a more open mind to the hobby has started giving me more confidence. I'm building an enclosure for my school and kind want to record the process now, so either thank you for giving me the confidence to maybe start a successful youtube career, or screw you for giving me the nerve to get attacked on youtube.

Well, hi there! :) Love the video idea!!! It is a very controversial topic and years ago people might have perma-banned you on a forum, if you even suggested cohabitation of different species. Now we know that communal setups can work well long-term, too. And with "work" I mean, that all of the pairs/groups within the setup freely show breeding activity without interference of the other. But as you said, lots of research must be done prior to putting different species into one setup. I did my homework and now I am a big fan of Ingo Kober, a German long-term reptile keeper and expert for geckos. In his book he recommended the cohabitation of day geckos and giant millipedes, which works out great for me! My giant day gecko and the 4 Madagascan Spirostreptidae sp. 6 (also advertised as Aphistogoniulus polleni) get along nicely, as in they seem to ignore each other. Both species climb all the time, but they use different branches: The gecko mainly uses leaf surfaces and smooth bamboo, while the millipedes stay on the rough branches with lichen and moss to feed on. I can also imagine that the red-eyed tree frogs that you mentioned would work within the setup, though this is a far cry, because I do not have a water feature in the scape as of now. Except for the bromeliad puddles, but I guess that will not do the trick, will it? Kober also successfully kept and bred nocturnal and diurnal species of geckos within one setup, giant Madagascan day geckos (Phelsuma grandis) and leaftail geckos (Uroplatus henkeli) in his case. This combo works, because both of these species actually have quite a range of temperatures that they thrive at, but most importantly because the U. henkeli can tolerate the warm spot of the day geckos within their habitat. Leaftails generally are not high temperature species at all and usually need on-point humidity levels! This specific cohabitation requires a very large enclosure though and should not be attempted by beginner reptile keepers, because it is easy to lose track of your inhabitants the more you have in one enclosure. I have also read that Gonocephalus/Hypsilurus (angle-headed dragons) species have a huge potential for community setups due to their calm and gentle nature, as well as their strictly insectivorous diet. If you want to check out these forest dragons I warmly suggest to check out Coops Reptiles channel: kzbin.info/door/PXnZ8xWV1g-SvF9MPtqP2A Much love from Germany! MP PS: I liked the previous intro music MUCH better! ;)

What I think would be cool is actually doing connected enclosures with different microclimates that all sit within a certain temp range of the things you plan on cohab and making each tank specific to that animals needs. This way the animals can cross to the other tank but will prefer to live in the one built for their needs.

Also I take my boas outside when the weather is fantastic..they often see the wild green anoles on trees or the fence and watch them closely as they bob up and down flashing their dewlaps...its kinda funny. The baby boas on the other hand want to hunt them.

I wouldn't mind having anoles again. Only problem is that my tropical terrarium is occupied by Crested Gecko and something moving around fast during the day might stress her out.

This is the herping version of building a big betta harem with catfish, frogs, shrimp, and snails for cleanup instead of buying one pretty betta and sticking him in a little bowl with a single fake plant 😁😁😁

Might attempt having mourning geckos with dart frogs (D. tinctorius), same requirements, won't eat each other, one is arboreal and nocturnal, other is mainly terrestrial and fully diurnal, it seems to be a successful combination for a number of people. Paludariums are great for cohab because they are made of two worlds and inhabitants of each often stay in the relevant one (water or arboreal). 🦎

i used to gohab in my paludarium (in the 1980) on the ground part 'red belly fire toad, in the water; african clawed toad, and some guppy's in the water, from my experience this can work creatly, but always be very carefull before you place different reptile and/or amphinian with each other, as mentioned make sure the have enough room for each other and observe how the react/interact with each other

Its also usually not a good idea to mix reptiles and amphibians because they often have vastly different temp and humidity requirements. There's very few good examples, but usually mourning geckoes, gonatodes ,sphaerodactylus, can go with dart frogs, and dwarf chameleons can go with mantellas. Anoles dont do well with treefrogs due to differences in tempreture and humidity unless you have a massive tank.

I just bought 3 baby morning geckos from a reptile expo and was planning on getting dart frogs too, but they were pretty much wiped out. In putting together a 18x18x24 thrive tank to put them both in. There will be two darts and 3 mourning geckos. Since they need very simular things, are awake at opposite time ( darts being diurnal and mourning geckos being nocturnal ), and stay on opposite parts of the tank ( the geckos in the top, the frogs on the bottom ) they are prefect for cohabitation! I can't wait for my babies to grow big enough to put them in their huge tank!

Unfortunately for me, here in Slovenia (🇪🇺), all these super cool animals are not available. Most people have never even heard of these animals, let alone kept one as a pet. I envy Canadians, Americans, ... sooooo much. Watching your channel, Snake Discovery, Exotic's lair, Tyler Nolan's channel is just amazing. I learned a lot. And hopefully one (soon) I'll be able to own some of these amazing animals. Keep up the good work.

@@WickensWickedReptiles Hey, maybe you should do videos on interesting and not commonly know reptiles or amphibians on different continents. Example: here in Slovenia we have 'the HUMAN FISH'. It is an amphibian and lives in only a few caves (biggest one is Postojna cave) here in Slovenian karst. There are 2 variations: the pink one and black one. They can live a 100 years. It would take a lot of research. But it would be awesome. I think your subscribers would love the idea.

I’m actually experimenting with this rn, i have a rhino rat and a rough green together for about two months now. Both of these species can be kept in pairs of their own kind and have similar habitat requirements (lots of foliage and water source) so they seem quite compatible. They snuggle up to each other all the time and never showed any signs of distress. The rough green is confident and is always exploring or basking out in the open. I was worried he wouldnt feel safe since they’re very shy snakes but he’s actually quite social with my rhino! Would also like to try with my lucy black rat and prasinum since they’re both semi arboreal but idk yet, my prasinum is still small so i’m going to sit on that thought. Prasinums can also be kept as pairs like other green snakes mentioned.
