Keeping a 20ft snake in an 8 ft tank should be illegal.

@lydiav88364 жыл бұрын
In Sweden it's illeagal to keep a 5m+ snake (16ft) in an enclosure thats less than 9 m²(96 sq ft) it also has to be atlrast 1,5 m(5ft) in height. Its great.
@SarastistheSerpent4 жыл бұрын
On the other hand, If the enclosure is too large, the snake can become uncomfortable. Remember that snakes like Retics and Burms (which are the only snakes that routinely reach over 20 feet) dislike the feeling of being out in the open. They like being somewhat confined and boxed in. Rule of thumb is to give the snake enough room to stretch out its full body, but no more.
@WickensWickedReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Sarasti S I totally disagree. You could give a snake a warehouse if you want. They key is to give it tons of cover. No such thing as “too big” of an enclosure.

I've thought about relocating to Australia as someone who is studying to go into Herpetology, but the thought of having to leave my Ball, BTS (since he's an Indonesian), Crested Geckos, Toad, and Mourning Geckos behind just isn't worth it. Everytime i handle my ball python, i keep saying to myself: this animal shouldnt exist. This shouldnt be this easy. When these outlier species become so common, its easy to forget that the most sensible response for any animal, when seeimg you, is to try to eat you or escape, or try to remove you from being a threat. I guess we just have to wait for some gene tinkering to take us to a future where iguanas only want hugs.

No anaconda or retic should be in a viv you can buy. 8ft enclosure isn't a little too small, its ridiculously small. They need a whole, large room dedicated to them. If you can't do that for them, in my opinion, don't get one.
@tpdomino35244 жыл бұрын
I agree
@kinglard30074 жыл бұрын
As someone who keeps them, Retics kept in larger enclosures are known to be much more defensive and stressed. They actually thrive more-so in tight spaces like tubs, and a 14-18 foot retic would do better in an 8 foot enclosure than a 20 foot one.
@papyrusthegreat4574 жыл бұрын
I don't own one but does that mean the Milwaukee zoo is underdoing it?
@michaelcolbourn67194 жыл бұрын
@@kinglard3007 I'm not trying to argue with you as you have the experience keeping them and I dont. But I find it extremely hard to believe that a 20ft snake would be uncomfortable in a large enclosure. Deck it out with hiding spots and foliage and make it feel comfortable i seriously think it would be much happier than in a tiny viv. I honestly feel like the whole "snakes like confined spaces" is almost a myth that reptile keepers tell themselves to help them sleep at night as they keep their snakes in a small box. The more space you can give the animal the better in my book. Thats what I do with my snakes and they seem to be happy enough.
@kinglard30074 жыл бұрын
Michael Colbourn it’s all perspective, if you give them a large or small enclosure they’re going to do the same thing, which is curl up in a corner and hide. If you can heat a 20 foot enclosure and find hides big enough to keep that enclosure cluttered go ahead. It might do fine or it might be defensive . Different snakes have different personalities as well, sone being more nervous than others, and some of my most nervous animals were in glass enclosures with hides, and as soon as i transferred them to rack systems/tubs they mellowed out.

Caiman Lizards I agree with 100%. They are my favourite species and absolutely stunning, but very complicated. Semi-aquatic & semi-arboreal. A combo that makes the setup extra complicated on TWO fronts. You also need a big and powerful filter for the water section, as they are going to get it super messy. So maintenance in general, as you said, is MAJOR. Top that off with a specialized diet revolving around snails, and you got yourself quite the complicated fella. For those that can care for these guys though, super incredible animals.

Been working with reptiles for around 10 years now. I have a 1.5 year old retic and i will say first hand if you plan on having a reticulated python you better own your own home and either put the work/money into dedicating a huge section of a room or money to buy a huge custom tank. Mesh top lids are horrible for my retic, as she damaged her face trying to pry the lid open. I'm 2 weeks deep and STILL working out converting a closet into a terrarium for her. And the Savannah monitor i got last year has been a constant battle, trying to get her housing right and finding a good diet for her. This list is 100% agreeable, kudos.

I'd also add sulcata tortoises to the list - similar to monitors, I see them sold for super low prices at expos as babies. But the amount of space they require as they grow is a real challenge unless you build them a custom enclosure or have a large yard. I've also heard some crazy stories about the massive holes/tunnels they can dig. Coupled with the long lifespan, I would definitely say that these are worthy of your list.

Lots of excellent points brought up on caiman lizards. 99.9% of them are farm bred/wild caught, so they'll need to be treated for parasites (assuming you can get them to eat initially). Their natural diet in the wild is snails and other invertebrates, so you'll need a steady supply of snails (either breed your own or buy frozen snails from an Asian food market). Like you mentioned, they need a huge enclosure that includes water to swim in, arboreal branches to bask on, and a land portion for potential digging or borrowing. We're planning on making around an 8'L x 4'W x 8'H enclosure for our pair of female caiman lizards, with about 350 gallons of dedicated swimming space. Can't wait to see more footage from Snakery Bakery's caiman lizard! 🦎👍

My veiled chameleon Guthix is pretty hardy and is able to eat from a dish, I got lucky with him. My panther chameleon Julian was surrendered to me in not the best health, so sometimes he struggles to eat and will only eat from my hand. If I try to fed him from a cup or dish, he has absolutely no interest. He also will not eat from just any person because he sees me as his source of food. I love my boys to death, but they are very high maintenance and I would not recommend chameleons to just anyone!

On the youtube channel Tank Tested there's a video of a $7000 paladarium with a Caiman Island lizard it is so beautiful seeing it swim under water through the glass- it almost seems worth it. There's a huge filter system for the water and there has to still be large water changes.

Hello Adam I am new to your channel today and have been binge watching. I am a Brian Barczyk fan. I watch him mostly for his postive attitude and his love for his animals. That brings me back every day, I am learning. ( I know there are many people who do not like him or his polices,) I am just here to say its not always about snakes, I am a rape survivor I bearly left my house for over 7 years, But his vlog is eveyday hes my friend, SO ADAM IN MY BINGE WATCHING TODAY I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH!!!! I have enjoyed all of them and the way you explain things you have given me a lot of ahh ha moments. You have a gift and your channel is lookss like you are doing well. Keep up the good work follow your dreams. I love that you have a bucket list. That you have goals and dreams. I like your no-nonsense approach about how to start and what will do best and how to care. And that you resrarch to give good information. SO looking forward to learning more. So I may never own a reptiles other than another desert totoise ours past away we had her for 35 years but we don't kown how old she was. We miss her roaming aroung the house. will be watching you

I agree that chameleons are an expert level reptile I have had three. Down to two. You have to watch them and there environment like a hawk ! Also they can get expensive ! If you want to mimic there environment as much as you can , be prepared to shell out some cash ! However, I love them ! They are definitely my favorite reptile !

My Aunt gave me her Green Iguana with the Enclosure she made when I was 11 years old. I thought it would be cool to lean a massive branch in my room and let him chill with me out of the enclosure. Surprisingly...Hades was poorly named. Definitely an oddball for Green Iggys. I just wish we didn't have a power outage(for several days) during an Ice Storm in the Winter. :(

@@WickensWickedReptiles You made me change my mind on the Monitor. I always wanted one since I watched Rescuers From Down Under as a kid. Yes I knew that they were testy, but you have this vibe and tone about you that solidifies what you're saying. Definitely wasn't getting a Chameleon though. I know that stress filled environments kill them, and my kids are too high strung right now.

I made the decision to NOT get a chameleon because I know I cant care for them like they should be taken care of. I thought your list was smart 👍

I remember when I first started my journey to owning my own reptile for the first time I joined my local reptile group. I asked about housing reptiles and cats in the same house and any tips to help keep the reptile safe, and then asked about two beginner reptiles (Leo and beardie,) and this one person decided to just rip into me. Told me how there's no such thing as a beginner pet because the care for one will not prepare you for the care of another (which is true in a sense however I firmly believe hardier pets are more beginner friendly than fragile ones,) and one of the examples she used was an iguana. Turns out the only lizard she has is an iguana and deemed it as an appropriate first reptile. Needless to say the rest of the people in the group were wholly against that.

Abbigail, I think you're one of the smartest people here. Finding out good information, from people that have personal knowledge, asking (and listening) to the answers is beyond wise. Too bad you ran into an absolute turd. I'll bet she doesn't have many friends. I'm glad you didn't let that discourage you (and gave you a good example of how NOT to act to the newbies you'll run into). If everyone who wanted animals for pets was this wise, we wouldn't need an SPCA and FLA would not be overrun by invasive species. Great job young lady!

My only issue with this video is you don't need a custom cage for a chameleon. Large Reptibreeze cages are just fine for the normal Panther or veiled chameleon. Chams super fragile though! Do your research but don't be afraid of them.

yeah a reptibreeze works

My spoiled beardie has a whole closet dedicated to her harnesses, hats, and bath toys. She sleeps in her pet carrier (zipped up) next to me at night and has her special blanket that she curls up in. She has a 75 gallon tank with tiny portraits of herself inside and a chihuahua bed with a turtle hide on top as her hide. Temp gauge which she knocks down and water bowl where she decides to poop-.- . When I get a house next year or so, I want to dedicate a room to our future tegu who will also be showered with love and care everyday❤️

I cant remember who said it, but i once heard "You can take perfect care of your chameleon. You can feed it perfect, water it perfect and keep perfect temperatures for it - but you will at least have to take it to the vet once in its life."

Panther keeper here and if I were to chose one word to describe her it would be 1000% be difficult. She is very sassy and will only let me handfeed her. She is a rescue with a damaged tongue and very extreme mbd. So the attitude is 10x due to her rough past.

Ye I agree with you on the chameleons. I am a massive fan of chameleons! And really wanted to get one a few years ago, but I just didn’t think I would be able to give to the correct care it needed because they are so fragile. Was in class/work far too much to give the level of attention it would need. so maybe sometime down the line but not right now.

I wouldn’t call myself an expert because I don’t know every little thing about reptile. Still def learning. But I agree about the iguana. I have an iguana and she is A LOT of work. I literally prepped for months before getting her and gave myself months to be committed before getting her. I made sure I was ready to take on the difficulty and level up with my reptiles. I love her so much but after I have had her I wish I wish I wish they weren’t so readily available at pet stores still! They shouldn’t be an impulse buy! No regrets but 100% agree with you!

I have 3 African Rock Pythons and yes their temperament is interesting to say the least. I have found you can work with the juveniles it can take months or years to tame them down, and some never do. They also have this habit of "resetting " themselves. If they get spooked or the like, all the time you've spent getting them to the point they at least tolerate you, it all goes out of the window and you're back to square one.

I love my caiman, he bit a couple days ago and drew blood, but i still played with him after. First time he did that, he was always warning me and it was a shock when it happened. Just got bit 20 minutes ago before that from another lizard but that was expected, he drew blood too but its different when its the first time they get you. Fun stuff.

I had two green iguanas 🦎. Made a custom cage for them which was 10’/4’/4’ . Had to separate them from time to time . Lol built it out of chicken wire and wood . Had four basking spots two hide boxes . A bunch of branches (not green) and a big ol swimming pool tub . They did just fine . But (you must take a lot of time out of your schedule) to help them through their rough handing stages . I had scooped up a killer career field . Had to let them go being that I was only home for two to three days out of a month .
@captainleonardodivichi2952 жыл бұрын
And when I say (let them go …) I ment I gave them to a person that I went to their house to check it out . And man let me tell you they couldn’t have went to a better place .

I love the section on Chameleons. Mine will only eat off a leaf or a container lid and have to use tongs to direct him towards it. He also likes to hold it in his mouth for up to 3 minutes before chewing, it can take an hour to feed him. Also only will eat one species of worm. He is in a 4' x 2' x 2' custom enclosure, little lizards that need a lot of space. On top of caring for them, also have to care for the live plants in the enclosure. Should definitely do a master list! Maybe break it down and do a video for turtles and tortoises, lizards, and snakes.

I agree with the chameleons lol!I have one! She is not picky at all though, she will eat anything in sight!! She is also gravid (not fertile) and I've made her a lay box, with vines leading down! Awesome video, keep up the work!
