This is literally Ash's relationship with Delia. If you think about it, Lillie and Ash are similar. Their mothers embarrass them (playfully), but they do love their children. HOWEVER, Delia's love for Ash is a lot more obvious. Although Lusamine loves her kids and doesn't treat them like shit like how she does in the games, she's busier with her research and that kiiiiiiiiiinda made Lillie think Lusamine didn't love her kids at all. I mean, on one hand, Lillie's a nice, polite, kind-hearted girl who loves Pokémon; on the other, we've got Gladion, who is the best representation of an edgelord in Pokémon; in the early parts of SM, he was cold and lacked emotion, all because he wanted to protect Lillie. By the time SM is done, however, Gladion has absolutely no more edginess in his heart. This is made clear when he cries upon reuniting with Mohn's Zoroark, and even more clear when he laughs his ass off with Ash before the EPIC Lycanroc battle.

I like to think that this is how Lusamine used to be from the start before her first encounter with the Ultra Beasts, and that she returns to being this way once she's cured of the influence of the Ultra Beasts, even in the games. I have a lot of respect for the Sun/Moon games having a story tackle the topic of an abusive mother. But I figured that would be a little too much for the anime as it *usually* tries to go for a lighthearted tone. That said, they still handled Lusamine very well. It's a somewhat toned down portrayal where she still obsessed over her work to the point of hindering her family relationships and becoming out of touch with how her children felt. She was able to self reflect on it and improve as a person before she was too far gone like in Ultra Sun/Moon.

Honestly lusamine being overly affectionate makes perfect sense if you consider the games Lusamines biggest trait is being so obsessive that it becomes a problem, believe it or not she did actually love her children in the games but was so completely obsessed with saving everyone,protecting what's hers,looking for her husband,and also having all of those negative emotions amplified far beyond her own PTSD thanks to nheligo that she became both outwardly and self destructive Lusamine does care,it just became a twisted mess at some point or another to the point that she neglected those she loved the most and pushed them away

One of the things I love most about Lusamine in the anime version is that she was taken by Nihilego to protect her children, you can clearly see this as she pushes Gladion away from Nihilego so he and Lillie won't be taken

Gosh man seeing her in the anime after playing the game freaked me out quite a bit. Maybe I'm just overreacting to it but my parents were quite emotionally abusive to me and after seeing how she was in the game and then seeing her act like this made me think of the times I'd be getting screamed at then they’d act all nice to me like nothing even happened and every time I see her I'm just anticipating something terrible but of course, nothing happens. This is the best Lusamine period. The game version is pretty crude given her origins but I can't seem to like understand her motives aside from finding her Husband. Here in the anime, she acts her pre-Ultra Beast self. She clearly care about Lillie and she put her over the Ultra Beast making her possession unwilling as if it's the ulta beast itself talking. I even enjoyed her breifing in the Guardain epsiodes like she came up with the script for the all clear salute.

We have 3 different Lusamines, 4 if you include the manga 1. Sun and Moon Lusamine: Horrible parent, genuinely going insane and subtlety abusive 2. Ultra Sun and Moon Lusamine: Not the best Or worst, flawed, seems to be the one in Pokemon Masters and is doing good. 3. Anime Lusamine: Smothering and trying too hard but very sweet, has a little crazy In her. 4. Manga Lusamine: Horrifying.

A lot of these scenes are portrayed as cute, but they’re just really sad. Like when the ditto escapes and Lusamine comes to talk to her about it after all is said and done. Lusamine, in the space of 30 seconds, did everything lillie asks her time and time again to stop doing, and then proceeded to prove her point 3 times in a row before vanishing for another phone call and ash and the others are just like “aww that’s so sweet”. That’s fucking depressing. It makes me feel bad for her. Think about how shit her life is because of her mom, when she was like 9 her mom just kinda left her at that house. she’s grown up alone in a gigantic house with only Hobbs to keep her company, until she enrolled herself in pokemon school to try and get some actual friends, only for her mom to take credit for that? And then gladion just up and leaves and doesn’t even come visit once or twice? She has to use nebby to go see him, creating a problem that didn’t exist and then gladion blames ASH. Like it’s ash’s fault she missed gladion that much.

Arguably, the game version of Lusamine could've still worked in the anime. She could've still acted crazy wanting to abuse her daughter by making Lillie dress up in beautiful clothing. Faba can be all in with helping Lusamine find the ultra beasts. They could've still kept Lillie and Gladion's traumatic past with how their mother was obsessed with finding the ultra beasts because Lillie only being scared of Pokémon is honestly a huge sugar coding compared to what she actually was scared of in the games. And after Ash and his Alolan friends save Lusamine from the Nihilego another arc should follow where Lusamine is in a coma and Lillie and maybe her other friends are traveling to look for a cure. This is probably where they can go back to Kanto to find a cure, and help her mom back in Alola. Lusamine wakes up and is back to her normal self embracing her two children. Telling them she's sorry and gets the explanation that the Nihilego was the reason that she was acting crazy from earlier. She was poisoned.
