Wicklow Way | Day Five | Moyne to Mullinacuff
It was so good having a breakfast provided by Margaret at the Kyle Farmhouse B&B, who even unexpectedly provided vegan friendly spreads, cheeses and milks, enough that I was able to make a wee fake cheese sandwich for later that day. We had all our gizmos charged up, smelly wet clothes now dry and smelly, and we were fuelled, if even a little bit too fuelled for the day ahead.
It was mostly rolling terrain with ascents and descents, but not the heart pounders of the previous days, however I had my walking poles out early in the day, as I have now realised their incredible benefit. Despite not having used them as much as I should have, I have had almost no body issues, however on the last section Christina was struggling with her feet, especially on the tarmac sections. Luckily, it was a shorter walk than anticipated, and brought us along beautiful boreens to the Dying Cow Pub, one of the few places in the middle of nowhere where you can pay to pitch a tent behind it. Just after we arrived, the heavens opened up, and once again, we had got to our oasis just before the storm 🙏
What can I say...the Dying Cow Pub...was pure magic. The people, the welcome, the characters, the kindness to strangers (one couple offered to pick us up the next day at the end of the trail, let us stay in their house, and drive us to Dublin the next day). It was so very local, but such an embrace to us outsiders, and in such a lovely location.
Galway may be known as the graveyard of bankers, but the Dying Cow could well be the graveyard of Hikers. As in, once they get there, they don't get any further 😂
It was also on this section that I decided that the yellow man on the Wicklow Way markers, should be called Cool McFinn...not Elvis 🤓
