Now knowing more from the community post, everything here makes sense now. That vision at the start was most likely the effects of the white smoke. Catnap wanted to comfort his friend, but had to do his job. Dogday realized he didn't come here to help, only to calm him so that he can be destroyed, so he calls Catnap a "betrayer" and has to use his own smoke to hurt Catnap back.

May I ask if DogDay considered CatNap a betrayer? Was it because he found out that their role in the Smiling Critters was to monitor them and keep DogDay in check with red smoke? Or was it because CatNap deceived him with a hallucination of them escaping together? Just asking also in the original AU DogDay hated dreaming by saying ''don't dream, stick to the reality of the day'' probably only seeing dreams as lies.

It's sad if DogDay hates dreams because they remind him of a life he wishes he had but cannot attain he chooses to face the harsh reality instead or turn to someone who could truly save him.
