Wide destruction after Hurricane Milton pounds Florida

There was wide destruction on the Gulf Coast of Florida from Hurricane Milton, but it wasn't as bad in some areas as officials had feared. Storm surges flooded some communities, while others were flooded by torrential rains, leading to hundreds of rescues. At least 12 people were reported killed. NBC News' Lester Holt reports from Siesta Key, Fla.

The standards for building should have been changed decades ago and they will have to be changed now. Climate change will only get worse and people will have to build higher and stronger than they ever did. We d oon't have to learn by having the same communities devastated over and over every 2 years.

Exactly. This looks worse than some Southeast Asian countries in typhoons. They build higher with concrete. Some trees may fall but not rip off the whole roof and leave people uncovered.

Brick and concrete are heavy and strong enough to withstand storms. Anything else, like a steel roof, or tiled roof is prone to be destroyed. I have a metal roof and the only damage I get is gutter downspouts soffit and screen. I was in the 100mph Windfield and all it did was give my house windburn more downspouts and soffit damage. By soffit damage u mean like 5 squares. Nothing serious. Since I bought it Ian was worse for me than this one. That trashed hwy 70 past arcadia

It’s the storms from the east, in early September you need to look for.. Now, this last storm, created a ridiculous number of tornadoes. I've never seen so many at once and never tornadoes that ripped up houses and tossed cars and dumpsters. So, you say this was barely a storm... @@Shh007 i think you’re right by saying this wasn’t the worst case scenario. And tbh it probably won’t make the top 10 list and if it does it’ll only be because Helene primed the coast and made it vulnerable. BUT the fact is that the storm made landfall SOUTH of tampa bay. Which means that it sucked water from Tampa bay; the only storm surge they got was a couple feet when the water returned. If Milton had made landfall in Pinellas county, the surge would have been funneled into Tampa bay, giving us that 15 foot surge everyone feared. Tampa is actually quite prone to “false alarms” because hurricanes change and move and are difficult to predict. There is a specific set of circumstances that must be present in order for Tampa to get “the big one.” Same with Houston.

God did not juice up these late season RI storms. Nothing natural about them. He did take Milton out though. They wanted a Cat 5 plus and got a Cat 3 with less storm surge than hoped for by the ones praying fur a killer storm to take out a Red state .
